Sore big toe sidelines Yao Ming indefinitely

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- All-Star Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets missed his first game of the season and the third of his NBA career Sunday night because of a sore right big toe that will sideline him indefinitely.

"It will probably be a multiple-game thing, whatever that is. We'll know more after he sees the doctor.
"He doesn't miss much. So when he misses, he's hurt."
Yao returned home before Sunday night's game. He has had a problem with his right big toe for some time, missing two preseason games because it was bothering him.
The 25-year-old center has played in 266 regular-season games since joining the Rockets in 2002. Houston returns to action Wednesday night at home against Toronto.
"We can still win," Van Gundy said. "Obviously, your chances are better when you have your better players."
Yao, the leading vote-getter after the first set of returns for this season's All-Star game, had 22 points and seven rebounds in an 89-81 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday that snapped Houston's five-game winning streak. He is averaging 19.9 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.36 blocked shots.
The Rockets are also without injured guards Rafer Alston, Jon Barry, Bob Sura and Derek Anderson.
"If you have Tracy McGrady on your team and play really hard and smart, you can be in games," Van Gundy said.
The Rockets are 0-8 without McGrady this season. McGrady was averaging 25.1 points in 14 games before Sunday night.
"We just have to go about business as usual," Rockets guard David Wesley said. "It's unfortunate. We've got to find a way to win despite that. It won't be easy."
Van Gundy said Dikembe Mutombo would start in Yao's spot. Mutombo was averaging 10.9 minutes, 1.7 points and 3.3 rebounds in 20 games.
"I'm ready to go, there's no question about that," the 39-year-old center said. "You don't know when your name is going to be called."
Lakers coach Phil Jackson said Yao's absence was "a disappointment for our fans."
When Lakers forward Lamar Odom was told Yao wouldn't be playing, he replied: "Good. This is sports, right?"
Odom went on to say he'd be happy facing the San Francisco Giants without Barry Bonds and the Indianapolis Colts without Peyton Manning.
"They've got a great player, though, a great player on the wing who can make shots," Odom said, referring to McGrady. "Mutombo's a warrior and he plays hard."

When you're 7'6" and 310 lbs., a bum toe can be a real problem. Even if you're not, it makes take-off really difficult in just about any movement: running, jumping, etc.

He has Shaq-toe-itis??????

Yes, I believe you will find that in the medical journals.

Shaq-toe-itis: An inflamation of either big toe that causes extreme pain to 7'+ persons who play professional basketball and causes them to miss games.

Why is this topic worthy? That's a real injury. And not just in basketball. Anyone playing a sport that requires foot-speed and maneuvering would be hampered. Think about how many times your feet pound the floor, sidesteps, turns, etc. over the course of a game. Any foot injury is debilitating and the big toe is major for balance.

Now, Camby is making a run for the Peja Award. Bum is killing my fantasy team.

Killing mines to. I was almost up in rebs but I lost major points because I'm missing his 13+ rebs and 3+ blocks per game.

HOUSTON -- The Houston Rockets proved they couldn't win without Tracy McGrady. Now they will have to prove they can win without Yao Ming.

Profile 2006 SEASON STATISTICS GM PPG RPG APG FG% FT% 22 19.9 9.0 1.3 50.633 83.688 Yao is expected to miss several weeks after undergoing surgery Monday to clean an infection in his left big toe, the team said.
Rockets team physician Dr. Tom Clanton performed the surgery to clean out an infection in Yao's toe. Yao was diagnosed with osteomyelitis, which is common inflammation of the bone caused by bacteria.
Rockets spokesman Nelson Luis said the surgery was successful and that Yao will require antibiotics and rest for several weeks. He did not have a timetable for Yao's return.
Yao returned home from Los Angeles before the Rockets beat the Lakers 76-74 on Sunday night. He has had a problem with his left big toe for some time, missing two preseason games because it was bothering him.
Yao, the leading vote-getter after the first set of returns for this season's All-Star Game, is averaging 19.9 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.36 blocked shots.
The 25-year-old All-Star has played in 266 regular-season games since joining the Rockets in 2002. Sunday's game was just the third he's missed in his career.
Losing the 7-foot-6 giant is a blow for the Rockets (10-13), who recently got McGrady back after he missed eight games with a back injury. Houston went 0-8 without McGrady.
Yao isn't the only Houston big man who is hurting heading into Wednesday's game against Toronto.
Dikembe Mutombo started for Yao on Sunday, but left the game with a dislocated left finger with 4:51 left. His status for Wednesday's game was not immediately known, and the Rockets have no other centers on their roster.

Damn you!!

Now, even if I get over my insomnia and actually get some sleep, I'm going to have nightmares about Digger and his fellow dermatophytes.

Whatever you do, don't mention the walking, talking mucus ball that lives in that guy's chest.

I've called him Calvin since the first time I saw the commercial. I always wondered what happened to the very weird guy who sat in the back of the room in my 7th grade science class. Finally, I found out...

Oh, oops. You said NOT to mention him, didn't you?

Oh, darn. I'm so sorry. Just forget I ever mentioned Calvin at all...
