PLANO, Texas -- A Dallas police officer who delayed Houston Texans' running back Ryan Moats from visiting his mother-in-law before she died in a Plano hospital has been reassigned to dispatch pending an investigation.

Moats, his wife and other family members rushed from their suburban Dallas home to Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano during the early hours of March 18 after getting word around midnight that Moats' mother-in-law, Jonetta Collinsworth, was dying. She had breast cancer.

According to Dallas-area media reports, Moats' vehicle, which rolled through a red light, was stopped by Officer Robert Powell in the hospital's parking lot.

Powell kept Moats and another family member for 13 minutes, threatening Moats with arrest and lecturing him. By the time Moats was released and entered the hospital, Jonetta Collinsworth had died.

At the point where a second police officer and then a nurse show up to back up the story this clearly became all about the officer's ego. I hate that people like this exist because it makes law abiding people fearful of encountering the police who are there to protect them. So sad, at least the daughter was able to make it before her mom passed because that would have made this even more infuriating.
 
This is one of those bells that simply cannot be unrung and it's very sad. Powell needs AT THE LEAST some sensitivity training. What a jerk...

You're spot on.

AFAIC, he should be fired. That's an absolute disgrace. Can you imagine what he went through just because of some stupid... I won't even say it. This really annoys me.
 
Having now seen the video clip at least two dozen times, the cop was a jerk. Moats kept his cool remarkably well, considering the cop had his gun drawn and was acting as though Moats had just mowed down a family and taken out a dozen people.

The ONLY good thing that can come of this is some kind of training video to keep it from happening in the future. Moats did all the right things, maintained his demeanor and just tried to get the cop to see what was happening. The cop, on the other hand, simply wasn't going to admit he might have made in error in judgment. It became all about badge-carrying ego and machismo ...

There's an old saying: It's all fun and games until somebody dies." Well, in this case, the cop's rigidity and refusal to even try to understand the situation led to a wrong that cannot ever be erased. And the really sad part is I don't think he got it, even at the end when the nurse, security cop and other officers were trying to point out the truth of the matter.

Another allegation has surfaced against the officer who prevented Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats from entering a hospital to see his dying mother-in-law last week.

The Dallas Morning News reports that Maritza Thomas, wife of former Cowboys linebacker Zach Thomas, was handcuffed and spent approximately three hours in jail after Dallas officer Robert Powell pulled her over for an illegal U-turn in July 2008.

"This in no way compares to what happened to Ryan Moats and his family," Thomas told The Morning News. "But we wanted to tell our story, not knowing how many others have been affected by Officer Powell. We know the vast majority of the Dallas police force are good and professional people, but this guy just seems excessive."

Four of the five tickets issued against Maritza Thomas were later dropped including failure to show proof of insurance, running a red light, improper address on driver's license and a registration sticker was not on the windshield. She accepted deferred adjudication for the illegal U-turn charge, and her record will be cleared next month.

An attorney for Officer Robert Powell said Powell resigned Wednesday over the March 18 incident in which he drew his gun and threatened Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats.
Powell stopped Moats' SUV in the Plano parking lot after the vehicle rolled through a red light. Moats' wife, Tamishia, and other relatives were also in the car.
Moats' mother-in-law died while Powell was ticketing and lecturing him. Powell later issued an apology, which Moats accepted.
The resignation was first reported by Dallas-Fort Worth television station KTVT.

I can honestly say I have no sympathy for the guy. That's what you get for being a complete and utter d***.
 
I have no sympathy for the guy either. Pulling a gun and threatening someone over rolling through a red light is not a guy I want in uniform. :rolleyes:
