ESPN overrated list

REMINDER: Snippets from ESPN Insider, especially if they pertain to the Kings, are generally okay. Posting entire articles, however, is not.

Thanks...

People who provide PAID subscriptions for things such as INSIDER do not generally object to occasional SMALL excerpts as it's almost like free advertising. Posting of entire articles, however, is something else.

Some sites have no problem with doing it; we prefer to stay on the legal side of things.

Apparently Steve Nash made the cut, as I saw something on espn.com saying it caused quite an uproar.

I don't have insider, I don't really care that much, but for curiosity's sake would it be acceptable for someone to post who made it on the list without the accompanying commentary?

I think that would be considered fair game...

Bare list, okay.

;)

Not only acceptable -- legally unassailable. Neither ESPN nor anybody else owns a list of names. They only own the copyright on the specific text.

Here we go:

1. Great but overrated:
Steve Nash
AI

2. Good but overrated:
Kenyone Martin
Lamar Odom
Baron Davis

3. Just Plain Overrated:
Jamaal Magloire
Kyle Korver
Darius Miles
Mike Dunleavy
Eric Snow
Ben Gordon
TJ Ford

I tend to agree, except that I didn't even realize that Magloire is rated. Does that guy ever play?

That's actually a pretty good list. The one surprise to me is TJ Ford, I guess he's recovering ok from his injury but I thought he was still pretty much considered a letdown at this point.

i don't understand nash being in that list. to a certain extent ai should not be on that list either. and eric snow? he is rated precisely what he is worth. if you want great and overrated, how about this season's tim duncan. i would also say that gilbert arenas is overrated. chris bosh as well.

That list sucks. "Overrated" has become such a meaningless term, it really has come to be used to say "crappy players with name recognition." AI and Nash can be on that list, since most people say they're great MVP caliber players. Davis could be there, since there was a lot of talk about him reviving Golden State. Odom? I haven't seen a good word written about him since Miami. Kenyon Martin is regularly ripped, as is all of Denver, even when he plays well. Like Odom, he hasn't been praised since he left the Nets. The only thing anyone says about Magloire is "wow, he's still playing." Which is actually something to be said. Korver: "he looks like Ashton Kutcher and can shoot 3s but sucks at everything else." All true. Miles: "He's a punk and doesn't deserve to play." Mike Dunleavy...I didn't realize he was even discussed, much less overrated. Maybe on GS fan boards? Eric Snow is berated for not having helped LeBron win his championship already, same as all other Cavs.

Ben Gordon and TJ Ford are the only guys who should be on a list like this, seeing as they get a lot of praise, and it could be argued that some GM is going to give them big bucks when they'll only be role players.

Okay, here's my list
Udonis Haslem
Jerome James
Brian Skinner
Jiri Welsch
Stephon Marbury
Lebron James

(Or just randomly select 6 or 7 NBA players and put their names here)

Seriously, you think people would need to learn proper language use before they become journalists.

I really don't see either Nash or AI as being overrated. They are having terrific seasons. Nash is certainly playing like a potential MVP candidate, leading a team with no legitimate big to the fourth best record in the NBA.

As for AI, maybe he was not perceived as a team player earlier in his career, but now he has certainly learned to play in control and take smart shots (personally I think he has a far better shot selection than Kobe Bryant who jacks up three pointers from 25 feet away). The truth of the matter is, whether you like AI or not, by the time he finishes his career he will likely be the all time leader in steals and within the top 3 or 4 in total points (not to mention third in ppg). The numbers alone obviously merit some name recognition. More importantly though, twenty years down the line he will likely be looked at as the best offensive little guy in the history of the NBA and easily one of the toughest and fastest. Beleive it or not, I am no fan of AI's, but let's be honest here - Iverson perhaps has the most unique style of play in the NBA. When is the next time there will be a six foot tall man who can score 30+ points and command double teams? He may not be the perfect ball player, but easily one of the best in the game today and well deserving of his fanbase and name recognition.

I don't like Iverson as a player because of his willingness to pad up his stat sheet, but those are some pretty good points you made there.
