ESPN Magazine Profile on Cousins

THEY. IT'S AMORPHOUS and malleable, and in Cousins' world, comprehensive. The NBA. The media. The refs. Anyone who calls him childish or immature or troubled. Anyone who mistakes passion for petulance. Anyone who suggests he needs to be saved from himself.

The NBA, in his view, kept him out of this season's All-Star Game despite his double-double credentials. The media propagate the bad-boy narrative as if spreading seed, never bothering to mention that he's never run afoul of the law. Nobody approaches a story on Cousins expecting introspection or examples of his charitable work. That's like visiting Las Vegas to check out the library.

A bit sensationalized but I think it was a good overall read

The important thing here is that the narrative is slowly changing in favor of Cousins, because his talent simply can't be denied, and he has improved leaps and bounds (from an 'antics' perspective) this year compared to previous.
If he can get out of this season with-out picking up another tech as well as continue his dominant play I think it will set him up well for next season.

Personally I think he's learning to channel his emotions and a lot of that comes with age and experience. Does the NBA and media hate on him? A resounding YES. It's sickening how the league pampers these "stars" and I feel it is impacting the integrity of the game negatively. The NBA has grown tremendously since it's infancy but I think it could be so much bigger if they would call games fair and do away with star treatment. If these headliner names are so good and some of them are they don't need the extra help. I love the fire that burns in CUZ and eventually I believe his reputation will turn around but that's not the priority the media never gave us our props even in our glory days so to hell with them.

J. Kidd beats his wife but he's a good guy right?
DeShawn Stevenson CONVICTED of rape while in the league.
Carmelo sucker punching people and tried to smuggle marijuana on a team plane.
Kobe (enough said)
J.R Smith killed a man driving like an A _ but is better known for some damn shoe laces.
Chris "birdman" Anderson was suspended for 2 years for substance abuse as well as another case that is sickening.
Larry Sanders fighting in clubs and injuring himself.

That's just off the top of my head and active players/coach but my point is Cousins get put in the Artest/Rodman catagory WHY.

It's about time. What bothers me is that he gets little respect from the local media and some local fans especially on this forum. If you are going to root for someone, why not Cuz? It is very easy to put people into a cubby hole and deny that most people are complex - some aren't. Boogie is complex and unfortunately the focus is one sided. Perhaps it is not easy to discuss a complex person in this sound bite era. We want to look at people simply because we either do not have the ability to see complexity or we don't have time. Maybe complexity does not sell.

Boogie is immature. That's an easy story.

Bull crap!!! :p I have always liked Boogie, the man.

Agree on the rest of the list but I believe the Birdman situation you are referring to has already been exposed as an extortion/scam in which he was the victim. That is if we are talking about the same thing (with a minor).

Nice article, which goes a long way toward capturing the essence of Cousins problems. He's a straight shooter, who doesn't believe in putting on a phony face in order to win the naysayers over. While I find that an honest approach, it's also a curse. Hopefully he can make it through the rest of the year without another technical. Sometimes you have to start with small victories in order to win the war.

Yes, this was a scam and he was the victim, I'm sure that's what upinsmoke was referring to.

From the video clip, it sounds like the article will be getting across how DMC thinks some star players are "anointed from the moment they come into the league" and that the league is "rigged" (paraphrased) and that some players don't get a fair shake and their mistakes are pounced on and magnified.

From a conspiracy theory standpoint, there's a lot of smoke here.
DMC has been screwed by the refs more than anyone I know of in the entire NBA since the day he stepped on the court.
I think that may be why I like him personally so much - that he is speaking truth to power.
He is not afraid to tell the truth and he won't playball with The Man just to sell out and have an easier career - he wants to make it on his own terms. This is probably why he wants to win so damn bad it's hard for him to stomach all this losing.

For ALL of the reasons you stated, I respect the HELL out of Demarcus Cousins.

Also, I identify with him a lot, sometimes frighteningly so. Sometimes it's crazy how much of myself I see in him. It's like we're living versions of the same Greek myth. Of course his has a lot more cash involved, as of now.

I haven't seen you on the court but I also suspect he has more game than you. I identify with Cuz also so from the first day he was interviewed in some depth until now, I have been easily able to see what is behind the scowl just as I have hoped that people have looked past some of my troubles.

Really good article that got down to the real Cuz and some honest insight to the real guy. It's been tough road for him with all the Kings whirlwind of crap before this season. Next year will the the completely new year beyond the transitions of this year and the player carousel that made life all the more difficult. Wait till next year for sure!!!

Am I the only one who noticed Brick's comment at the bottom??

Nope, I also saw it.

I also saw a comment that said something like (roughly) "This article has changed my opinions on Cousins, will follow him from now on." It's great to see what unbiased articles can do to open people's eyes.

??? I don't see any comments.

Go to the article on the espn site, and scroll down to the bottom. There is a list of comments, facebook style, and you can find Bricks avatar and posting name "KF Brick"

It's an excellent comment and everybody on this site should "like" it, so that it climbs to the top and is seen by many.

Brick really just nailed it about as well as you can in a short paragraph. Well done sir. I wouldn't want to sit across from you in a deposition that's for sure.

No comments show up when I'm using Firefox. I opened Chrome, however, and they're all there. Strange... Anyway, I added my "like" to Brickie's comment.
