Ed Davis

Not sure why he isn't getting more attention. He probably offers the best combination of upside/production after the top 4, while also fitting a need for a defensive-minded big who can rebound well.

He tested as being the most athletic big man at the combine (his numbers were nearly identical to Favors').

In addition, the only big men that were more productive this past year were Cousins, who I would take ahead of Davis, and Aldrich, who isn't nearly as athletic and is a year older to boot.

The primary knock on him is that he is still pretty raw offensively, not possessing a mid-range game or the ability to put the ball on the floor.

That being said, he is still fairly young, so I don't we can close the book on him developing this part of his game just yet.

Last year I thought Davis was overrated when he came off the bench for North Carolina. I haven't seen him play this year, but I do like what I've read. I read somewhere that his numbers were better than Favors (and I think in less mpg?). I'd still choose Cousins over Davis 10 times out of 10 but I don't think I'd be disappointed if we choose him because of his upside. I think I like Udoh more though now that I've watched some footage of him play

I like Davis a lot... he's a notch below Favors prospect wise but he's still a really good prospect himself imo. If Cousins is gone when we pick (my nightmare at this point) then Davis enters the equation I think. If it's between him and Aldrich then the fact that Aldrich plays center and is a slightly better rebounder and shot blocker than Davis plays a big part in the equation I think. What Davis does have that Aldrich doesn't though is NBA athleticism in terms of his vert.

Hard to not like him I think. He has a lot of potential and is already filling out his frame.

Really what it comes down to is when do we want to peak? If we're looking to stock the team with guys that need time to develop and we have a timetable for it all then guys like Davis makes sense because he's going to need some time.

I didnt like him this year, but the more I look at it .. its hard to give Favors the "had no guards" argument and then not give Davis that same treatment.

I wouldnt take Davis at 5 .. yet. Maybe if he shows up healthy, and in great shape for workouts ... and impresses, I would consider him if Cousins is gone.

Yeah, that's the thing... if Cousins is gone it gets a lot tougher. Imo we should really look to move up a spot or two if possible but if we can't and Cousins goes 4th then we have to look at guys like Aldrich, Davis, Johnson, and Aminu. All of those guys are a lot less ideal than Cousins though imo which is why we should either pray he falls or trade up a spot.

He's way more than just a notch below Favors.

Davis is a decent idea for us if he impresses in workouts. He is a solid upside pick, but I can't say I really believe in his ability to reach his upside. It would be a homerun swing.

Favors is clearly the better prospect... not really interested in arguing how much better he is than Davis. They're clearly in the same mold and Favors is clearly better.

i think ed davis will get a very long look from petrie.... he has very comparable numbers and athleticism to favors and is a good shot blocker....

if he impresses in workouts, i think he will be the kings pick....

i would be excited about his upside, but it will take a few years for him to blossom....

If we go for a big with our fifth pick I wouldn't mind taking Davis. I think Udoh is going to be the best big available if Cousins is off the board, but I have Davis right behind him in terms of potential.

I think Davis is going to end up a lot like Andris Biedrins. A shot blocker that can run the floor and gets his points by rebounding and finishing breaks. My biggest concern with him is his post defense. He has good footwork and he isn't afraid of contact, but he is just isn't strong enough at this point.

He wouldn't be a bad pick although I would rather take Johnson or Udoh, assuming Cousins isn't available of course.

Actually Davis is a pretty good post defender and shotblocker. I don't see him as a center though. At least not at his current weight. And thats the problem for me. Udoh isn't a center either, but he's big enough to play it under the right circumstances. In time that may become true for Davis.

I never questioned his shot blocking. I also think he has a good understand of how to play post defense but with his lack of bulk I think he is going to get pushed around a bit. Moving him to PF full time would alleviate some of my concerns.

I'd say Davis has more going for him as a center than Udoh, simply because he's got the longer standing reach. Everything else is about equal with him and Udoh. Except Udoh has more weight, but he doesn't really have a much bigger frame than Davis, so Davis could get there and beyond eventually.

Yeah, I was re-reading Davis' DX profile today, and while that's clearly not a comprehensive summary, it did leave me with the thought that since his frame could stand to add additional bulk, he might be able to stand his ground against NBA centers with further physical development.
