Earthquake off of Eureka?

We just got a tsuami warning in San Diego becuase of a 7.6 quake off the coast of Eureka. Have you all heard anything about this?

tsunami in SD cuz of earthquake in eureka....... i know about the earthquake it was like a 7.2 but i doubt a tsunami would reach all the way SD

Wrong, Fillmoe. If the earthquake was generated by a fault off the coast the resulting tsunami could very well affect southern California.

yeah, they're saying from the Mexican border all the way to northern cali. The first wave is supposed to hit around 10:30 tonight. My buddy just called me from Arcata and said it was a decent sized quake. I felt one two days ago around 8:45 in the morning, but it was small.

Long Beach now.
Grew up in SD though.
The warnings finally stopped here. Thank God.

I live about 1 mile from the water, I was pissed that I was going to have to leave more than anything. Stupid Phil Jackson is on TV now instead

I was down in OC on Sunday and felt that too. It was a 5.6..I was surprised, I thought my friend's little boy was jumping on my bed. :)

^^^I was asleep and didn't feel a thing. It's funny because I've lived in Cali my whole life, Norcal until I was 18 and so cal for 8 more and I can only remember feeling one earthquake in my life.

I grew up going back and forth between parents in the Bay Area and Pasadena/Altadena and I felt several earthquakes during that time. Like any decent Los Angelino, I didn't even bother with concern unless the richter was in the high 4's.

In fact, I got in trouble once because my best friend and I stayed on the phone during an earthquake and my mother couldn't get through to make sure I was okay. I don't care what anyone says, someone has to die to interrupt high school gossip. A little rumble ain't gonna do it.

I live in Eureka and it was minor here. The epicenter was too far offshore to do any damage along the coast. The only real threat was tsunami, but we'd need a quake similar to the '64 quake to pose a real tsunami threat. There have been quakes much larger than this 7.0 off the coast of Petrolia that didn't create tsunamis. We'll get concerned when there's an 8.0+ off the coast. No worries.

Strike-slip faults apparently don't do much underwater, and I'll bet this was a strike-slip event. When I read the post I thought folks were confused and were talking about the recent swarm of southern Califonia quakes. An offshore-Eureka event would have to be a hell of a quake to do much to San Diego given the distance and coastal topography.

It appears my guess regrding the nature of the subject fault was correct. It is woth noting that there are always large subordinate thrust faults associated with these major strike-slip fault zones. Apparently, north-coast people got lucky this time.

There has been lots of crazy speculations on the radio regarding the potential for impacts on the coast of California, including a statement by a geologist that a tidal wave could make its way up the Sacramento delta. Not true!

Places like Fort Brag, Crescent City, and Eureka, with west-facing coastlines and broad low-lying inhabited areas are at greatest risk. Beaches south of Santa Barbara might be hard to impact from a big north-coast earthquake because much of the southern California coastline faces generally southwest. The Hunting beach, the Balboa Peninsula, and Laguna Beach would be in serious trouble if there was a major earthquake in the offshore region south of Santa Catalina. Watch out Kobe!

and again, another little shaker today at around 2:30 pm. 5.0 magnitude, no damage i've heard of.

I remember in the mid 90's there were so many tremblers that it became old. A bunch of my friends were sitiing around when one hit...we took bets on the magnitude before we turned on the radio.:p I won.
