Draftexpress Q & A with Eric Maynor

If we get a PG, I really don't see what's wrong with taking another guard with our late first. That's where the strength is likely to be, so you take the BPA and figure it out from there. I really like Thornton, Collison, and Budinger there.

I don't think he's a true PG, but seems like a good gamble at #23 from what I have seen and read. Another gamble at a Bobby Jackson type backup. Even if we get Rubio, having a third point guard to give Beno some competition is probably a very good thing.

I think Marcus Thornton is the B-Jax type of player in the late first round.

I like Maynor. I think his game will translate well to the NBA. He's got good size and he's long, and he's skilled. He's not a freak athlete, but he doesn't need to be. Also, he's a little on the thin side.

I don't think he'll be there at 23.

I'll have to look him, up, I honestly don't know much about Thornton.

Strengths: Good off-ball activity, very good shooter, decent at getting to the basket/drawing fouls, solid defensive tools/effort, good role player, and decent enough versatility to guard the 2 position.

Weaknesses: Just an okay ball handler, lacks a mid range game, defensive IQ could use improvement, shot selection could still stand to improve, lacks height for the 2 guard position (about 6'4), most likely a bench player, and lacks PG skills.

Comparison: Roger Mason Jr.

Your analysis is interesting when compared to his Q & A, where he considers himself a true pt guard. My personal opinion is that he's one of those guys thats pretty good at everything but not great at anything.. Just sort of a solid player that doesn't make too many mistakes, not flashy or spectular. At the end of the day a guy that will give you 10 points and 6 or 7 assists and 3 turnovers. He won't lead the league in steals but will do a pretty good job on man defense. Hmmm. I'm starting to like him...:D

Hmmm, sounds eerily similar to one Quincy Douby :D Actually, if RMJ is more accurate, sounds solid. I think at this point I would rather swing for the fences a bit more at 23. Should be some boom bust prospects left still. Now at 31, he sounds good.

I think he has a good chance of being a good role player, but I don't see a lot of star potential. With a team like us, I think we need to take more of a gamble.

Vlade was giving me the scoop On Marcus Thornton, wasn't talking about MAynor I believe.

Eric Maynor would be a steal at 23. He is not considered a pure PG because he had to do alot of scoring on his own at VCU, that teams sucked. With superior talent around him he can be a pure PG.

He's nearly a 22 year old senior who has spent the last 4 years learning to play baksetball by scoring instead of passing. Your assessment may be right, but history is pretty squarely against it. If a players is pass first in college it usually translates to the pros and vice versa.

Sorry, I was giving sptsjunkie my breakdown on Thornton, I guess I should've mentioned that somehwere. My bad.

Yeah, chances are he won't be the best available at that pick, but trading up a few spots from 31 might be a nice small deal to do, if he doesn't fall. There are similarities to Douby but he's got a stronger frame, and he knows how to be a role player and play off the ball, he knows his limitations better than Douby does.

No, it was my bad. By the way, I agree on Thornton....I see him as a change of pace player that can bring defense off the bench. I don't see him being quite the scorer that Bobby was.
