Don Nelson

Sum182

G-League
I was watching Dallas vs. Kings on TNT in spanish, and the guys said that there's some rumors that mention Don Nelson's return with the Kings. They said that Nelson is a very good friend of the Maloofs.

MMMM... it would be another bad move.

Bad move? In 1997 Don Nelson was selected as 1 of the Top 10 coaches in NBA history. He has been named NBA Coach of the Year 3 times. He is 3rd All Time in career coaching wins. He has turned 3 pretty lame franchises into solid winners (Milwaukee, Golden State, and Dallas). Although he has never won a championship, he is easily in the same calibre of coaches as Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, and Larry Brown. Plus, he is more authoritarian and emotional than Rick Adelman. I think it would be very interesting if he coached the Kings.

But, for some reason, I get the feeling the Kings will hire a younger coach if Adelman leaves.

Off topic, but I just gotta ask........Why is it that an emotional coach is a good thing, but women are derided if they are emotional? Just wondered. ;)

Nelson would be more of the same for us -- and a guaranteed loser in the playoffs year after year. Small ball. All offense, no defense. Not a serious contender to ever win anything. He's a great offensive coach and thinks outside the box (too much so actually at times). But he is NOT in the same class as the Rileys and PJs because he doesn't coach in a manner that will ever win anything. Nonetheless he's obviously a major coaching figure who will eventually put a lot of points on the board and is fully capable of winning a lot of regular season games with Nellie ball. We could do that -- but a 65 yr old man (or whatever) with a bag attached to his leg to collect his waste products, who's never won anything and isn't likely to now -- that would just be treading water agian. Not a move for the future. Not a move to get over the top. Just the "safe" move.

Not saying Nelson is good or bad but I have never liked him as a coach. I don't think you can say he is any better then RA since he hasn't won anything same as RA.

I agree with Brick he is creative but I would rather see some serious roster changes before I see a coaching change. This still is not RA's fault.

if yall dont like us playing defense now.... just wait til nelson is our coach... LOL

I'm not sure whether to give this 'rumor' any thought at this point. Until, and if, Adelman gets fired...I really wont believe any 'rumor'. But who knows. Would love to see a link in writing about this...sure someone has published this...its sorta decent-sized NBA news. Not sure whether I'd rather have Nelson or Adelman at this point...Terry Porter or Paul Silas would be my replacement choices, but thats just me.

the one thing I will say about Nelson, is that he knows how to do quick overhauls on teams and get them pointed in the right direction, thats for sure. He did some pretty quick work assembling the core of the Mavs team now, most of the guys on the team were his findings. They were crap before he got there. And so were the Warriors and Bucks back in the day, too.

I think Nelson would be a good move.

It would move away from the Princeton Offense - once and for all. He can run an offense that would be productive for these players.

I think Adleman has lost the respect of his players and that happens over time. Doesn't matter who the coach is.

Nelson is a big name and can attract some FA.

Nelson might spark some life into this group and give us some short-term success, but just seems like a band-aid, not a recipe for success down the road. I want a defense-oriented coach here if anything is going to change. This team needs a new mindset.

I think you're right about Nelson bringing in a new system that would be a better fit for these players, and might attract some FA's. Long term, though, I would not have high expectations. Nelson can't get it done in the big show.

This whole Nelson can't win the big one is a little absurd don't you all think?

I mean, only 4 or 5 active coaches HAVE won the big one.

LOL you do not want me to give that answer :D

Don Nelson "doesn't coach in a manner that will ever win anything." I thought about responding to that statement, but it is so astonishingly stupid that I think I will pass.

What if it said, "Don Nelson doesn't coach in a manner that will ever win anything relevant"???

Yike's lets bring a coach who probably got ejected more then Rodman and Sheed combined.... Don Nelson is a entertainer we're serious here folks we don't need any maniacs.

I can not see for the life of me how a new coach would make any difference with the Kings. You must have a bunch of very good players, which includes consistency, to do well in the NBA. At this point, the Kings do not have enough "very good" players. Some of our alleged veteran "very good" players have been annoyingly disappointing this year. How is Adelman resposible for unforced turnovers, missed lay-ups, poor defense, lack of athleticism, cowardice in the paint, or missed free-throws? Most of our players have suffered from at least one of these failings this year. Some players seem to alternate between the various problems depending on the mood du jour.

And yet oddly you would be hard pressed to find anybody in or around the NBA who would disagree with it. Career sub-.500 playoff coach. Teams always playt small. Haven't played defense in 20 years. No chance of going anywhere when it matters.

Look at the coach on the sidelines. That's all you need to know.

Teams tend to take on the attitude of the coach and it looks like he's given up for the most part. I'm not sure if the team gave up on him first ... but whatever he's doing it's uninspiring to the fellas.

I agree with VF21 that the team needs to trust each other - but it seems like Adleman and staff aren't enforcing that trust or giving this team an identity.

Sometimes all it takes is a slight change. Look at Denver last year ... no one thought that he was going to make a lick of difference ... and he did.
