People were generally worried about Petrie since the Webber trade. And I don't think it's going to change now. They will feel better momentarily, but if someone really things trading Webber was a bonehead thing to do, getting Bonzi ain't changing that.

Personally, I was anxious that Petrie was handcuffed by circumstance. I'm glad he's pulled something out. He's not done yet, either. You can count on that.

I was never worried about the 2 guard spot. I was comfortable with Martin getting a shot. I was worried about our bigs and we got rid of one and are now only 3 deep and one of those 3 is smaller than our new 2 guard.

Disagree KP. A GM can never predict the future, and based on everything we know now this is a great trade. Tag and BJax are on downsides of their careers, being injured and out of shape, both face challenges to perform to their full potentials. Wells is in a good position, underperforming in a bad environment. He has a chance to shine here. And if all else fails, it's only a 1 year contract, so no risk.

This is the first of 3 moves, I predict this offseason, I dont know who else we are going to get, Bonzi was being talked about for days, but the next two will be for a PF and a backup center...there is still holes in our lineup, and we should expect the unexpected in the next couple months.

Mmm...not really sure this is "genius" level stuff just yet. Think its the sort of risk you have to take, but it could still go south and its not as if there weren't people on this very board calling for this trade, or something similar, ever since the offseason began.

I'm glad we did it, but let's be honest here -- Bonzi Wells had been an unmitigated ******* over his career, and that's why a player of his talent has been so underutilized and was available to us. Could work out very nicely -- Bonzi absolutely has the possibility to be as good at what he does as any of the rest of the "core" are at their stuff. But he could also be a true disruptive force and leave us high and dry.

We'll see. I think this is the sort of risk you have to take, and the style of player (if not necessarily personality) we need to get. I'm not going to regret Geoff's decision no matter how it works out. But this isn't a case of Geoff being one step ahead of everybody else -- its a case of him doing what is necessary and making the logical call. Good solid move with the potential for more, but still much work to be done.

That's pretty unfair. Webber has over 60 million dollars owed to him over the next three years. He couldn't practice with the team because of pain in his legs and he was trouble on the second night of back to back games. That's a huge risk because if he does go down anytime within those three years he is untradeable and still one of the highest-paid players in the game. That's why the deal was made. It was risk management and the decision was made that the potential risk wasn't worth the reward.

Also, Webber wasn't a backup center so why is that a pre-condition of us not f'ing up the webber trade? That's an entirely different issue. Was OTag an effective backup center for us last year? Certainly not. There's a chance he could be better this season, but again, that's a risk. I don't think that's a huge loss for us because quite realistically, if he didn't improve we still were without a real backup center and paying an extra 4.5 million dollars for a guy who's contributing nothing.

And getting a real PF, well that depends on what you consider a real PF. If you mean a star player, what team is going to trade a star PF for an older, injury prone one making a lot more money? Would you make that deal? The Kings got a servicable starting PF and a couple of solid, though unspectacular, backups. Not the mighty haul we would have hoped for, but certainly not a catastrophe. You have to look at the risk of the Webber contract situation to evaluate that trade not just at player stats. We lost our superstar PF when his knee was destroyed in the Dallas playoff game, not when Petrie traded him to Philly. What we traded to Philly was a flawed but still capable veteran PF with a huge contract and substantial injury risk.

If we're going to be the team we were two years ago, we need a great PF. But that was two years ago. A lot happens in two years. That's why winning three championships in a row makes you a dynasty. It's not easy to hold an elite team together for that long and stay at the top against always changing competition. There's this whole myth that Petrie is some kind of wizard with making deals. The truth is that he's a very astute and competant GM who evaluates the risks and makes smart deals. That's what he's done here and it's what he'll continue to do. If you're expecting miracles you're bound to be disappointed.

I still don't know what to think of this trade yet. He doesn't trade even 1 of the pieces that was supposed to make it easier to trade (the reason for dumping CWebb's big contract...but, there is still time. We desparately need a PF since the one we have is so undersized...but again, there is still time. He trades for an SG when we have 2 capable SG's just waiting for playing time, knowing full well that they will not get much time off the bench under Adelman, now that we signed another veteran in Wells. Not to mention we get another trouble-maker...maybe one of the worst ones yet.

Did Petrie need to make some moves? Absolutely!! But, he is looking to me like a GM that is making moves just to be making moves. I have never seen him like this before (i.e. what we have seen from him in the past 6-8 months).

So, am I questioning Petrie's sanity? You bet. Do I really really hope I am wrong? For sure, for sure.

i think the bonzi move was one that had to be made....given the limited choices that are available....

however, im not sure how bonzi was in a bad environment....

if so, however, it appears bad environments follow bonzi around....

bonzi is a very talented individual with baggage....getting kicked off ur own playoff team and told u will be arrested if u come to the arena doesnt really speak to the environment....

one can only hope that with a fresh start he realizes his mistakes and is prepared to make some changes....the fact hes in a contract year could either help or hurt....with someone who has often wanted the ball more than what hes got it, and then proved to be a problem, u hope he realizes that being a distraction again would really be a costly mistake in a contract year...but then that would require rational thought, and bonzi doesnt always do that....

lets hope for everyones sake that bonzis talent is on display in sacramento and not anything else...the kings gave up a couple decent pieces to get him, so they really need for it to work out...their options at this stage are dwindling....

He was upset in Portland because they were losing with a bunch of good players and he had problems with coach Cheeks. He was upset in Memphis because he wasn't getting any playing time. Those are the bad environments that have been following him around. He's a guy with a short fuse, but I don't think he's going to start trouble if there isn't something already there.

Yep. I'm with you. I don't think the Wells trade was necessarily bad (his problems bother me, but I'm trying to keep an open mind), but I'm surprised that we didn't package Bobby with one of our "flexible trading pieces" that we acquired with the Webb trade. There is still time, and I find comfort in that, but as of now we are lacking a PF, and the players that were going to make us so flexible are still here. Although we have 3 separate contracts, they are not exactly bargains with small contracts. I felt like to get the most out of trading them we should package them with someone who is underpaid to make things work. Well, pretty much that's Peja and Bobby, and Peja isn't going anywhere. We''ll have to see how things go, but I'm not sold on the Webb trade, and we be even less so if we still have Skinner, Thomas & Corliss come the beginning of the season.

I say give it a couple more weeks and that will show if I question GP. I am one of the people that loved Webber but thought that the trade was needed. We do have 3 pieces that we gained from the trade that are good and that other teams can use, IMO. I think GP is going to package up 2 of the 3 in a multi team deal and give us something good, we just need to wait.

Now, I'm not saying that we are going to the Finals this year but we will definatly be better off then we were before.

Jerry West just made that they have 17 players on the thier team, they took the same salary they shipped out and only Bo Jax is expiring (I Think), He forced him self into aquiring players that they didnt need bad move on his part.

To each his own. I think West's handling of his Bonzi problem was far superior to the genius Petrie's handling of his Mobley problem. Time will tell but Jackson is a former 6th man of the year and great locker room/community guy + Lopez is a heck of a player.

Yeah i was thinking about Brad playing the 4 as well. I wonder though is that even on adelman or petries mind, or are they just looking for a PF. I thought when webber was hurt and brad and vlade played together that it worked pretty nice. Even last year in the playoffs when Greg and brad played together they did pretty good. I just wonder how management is looking at it.

Whatever may be in the future is going to be something new. 10 of 12 players have swapped in 2 years. There is no institutional memory here now. Have to figure out something new. And actually exactly what I would hope Bonzi would be able to do is be a guy who can outside the old system, create for himself, attack people rather than just hoist up a sjump shot, get fed when he has a mismatch etc.

Been thinking about this turn of events all night. Petrie miscalculated on his ability to sign and trade Mobley. That's where this move should have come from. Bobby should have been packaged with someone(maybe with Tag, maybe with one of the "Flexible" contracts) to get a big. We now have lost our 2(Mobley), our backup point guard(6th man of the year when healthy), and our backup 7'1 + center for a replacement 2 that could very well walk for nothing next year. Bonzi has talent but he also has issues, Big Ones. If we were going to bring in a head case I would have rather had Artest, at least he has been succesful on the court. Bonzi has always started out well and finished awfully. I mean it's not a good sign when Memphis is supposedly his big chance to turn it around and by the end of the year he's barred from the arena with orders to arrest him if he steps foot in the building, and that was during the playoffs! I'll root for Bonzi and this is a contract year, so things could very well turn out different, but if the team doesn't play well things could get messy in a hurry. We all talked about the fact that the Kings don't really have the leadership anymore to get on this guy if he gets out of line, that doesn't just go away now that he's a King. Petrie is awake at the wheel but is the car about to run of the road? Guess we'll find out...

I always thought that Vlade and Chris were a very unique core - their combined basketball IQ is staggering. With or without Peja, JWill, Bibby, Doug etc... they were going to the playoffs.

The dismantling that started with letting Jim Jackson walk is now complete. Kings basketball is dead indeed. It will be interesting to see what the new era brings.

Its no exaggeration to say the best passing frontcourt in the history of the NBA. Was a blast. But all good things come to an end. And there are a lot of ways to win at basketball. In fact ours was a very unusual way that attracted so much attention largely because nobody else was doing it, or had the personnel to do it. Likely time for a more traditional approach now with those special players gone. Wish they'd gotten a title, but they will still be long remmebered and had a real impact on the league and the world audience.
