Developing the younger players... a topic to discuss

Okay I am going thru WBNA withdrawal.

Some how following the players in Europe just doesn’t cut it. And now with the NWBL totally defunct I am at a total loss.
Thank goodness for the NCAA season. They tend to offer some thrills.

So here I am lost until the Madness of March begins.

I thought we needed a non-divisive topic to mull over.

I have been working with high School players in the area. And we have been discussing players that they should try to pattern their game after. Now of course my 5’6 point Guards wanted to be like LJ, and my Centers want to be like DT.

So I had to give them guidelines. Select a player that has comparable skill sets that you have. Comparable in size and speed, with the same strengths and see what makes them successful.

So I thought that would be a neat game to play with our younger Monarchs. I have always maintained that we need to get a free agent to mentor Nicole Powell. Almost every successful player has had that type of person to help them navigate the early parts of their career. Bear in mind I am not talking about acquiring this player. Just someone to pattern their game after.

So since Nicole is first on Deck, at first my thoughts were of Sheri Sam. Big Girl at 6’1, Sniper mentality, very tough minded. But Miss Sheri does have her drawback. And I forget whether she is a decent defender or not.

Of course my lil freshman point (who happens to love Nicole) thinks that she should pattern her game after Tina Thompson. Her Second favorite player.

Genius... Out of the mouths of babes right. Why didn't i think of that. Big Tina is a great choice.

They are Both 6’2 and very big, have really good outside shots, former post players. Well that is not true for Tina. She is a post player. But their roles are very similar. They are both asked to match up with Wings and Post players.
I am thinking if Nicole starts to think about herself as a 3 ½ like Tina, rather than a really big guard, who like to dribble all day, she could really maximize her potential.

Besides, Who can argue w/ Tina.? She is a fairly good person to pattern her game after. Of course adding her own distinctiveness to the game.

Okay folks… We have a topic… Discuss.
