DeMarcus Cousins Is The Absolute Key to the Defense of the Sacramento Kings

Cousins defense is improving. He's not going to be on the All Defense team next year, but he's certainly not in the bottom quartile of starting centers. I'll give accolades for all of those charges he takes: he has excellent anticipation. He's starting to get down the floor better on D. His shot blocking is improving, to the point where he's surprising a lot of people. There are a lot of positives. He just has to continue to improve; it's all about consistency and effort.

The main flaw I find in his defensive play are the stupid fouls. I'd really like to know the stat on the number of games he's played this year in which he has gotten two fouls in the first quarter. Sixty? Seventy? It's almost farcical. At the start of games he might as well just tell the scorekeeper ahead of time to place "2" in the foul column for the first quarter. It is, however, a good selling point to a potential FA backup center: You're going to get a lot of playing time.
