Dejan Musli

I wasn't quite sure where to put this, but since Musli is an NBA prospect, I thought this forum was as good as any other (also, apologies if there already is a thread about him, which I didn't see). As it turns out, the next opponent of BG Göttingen (my hometown team) in the Euro Challenge is going to be KK FMP Zeleznik, a team boasting four future NBA prospects (and, interestingly, only one player older than 24), the most prominent of the bunch being Dejan Musli. I've already looked up his Draft Express profile, but the last bit of information is already nearly a year old and I'd like to have some more up to date stuff on the guy, especially since he looks to be a player the Kings could use and I'll be seeing him up close tomorrow. So I would like to ask everybody that knows more, specifically the Serbs of this forum whether there is something to look out for and if anybody feels like saying some more about Zeleznik in general, I'd very much appreciate that as well.

Hahaha- your hunch that Musli was a fit for the Kings is uncanny. Not only is he also a Serbian center, he is comparable in size and skills (less passing ability, better shot blocking) to...........Vlade. Will be interesting to see the way he sizes up- huge statistics, monstrous for his age, but serious questions persist about the competition he's faced and how he would play in a quick-fire system like the NBA, as opposed to the more herky-jerky stop and shoot system of Euroleague.

Here is a quick breakdown of strengths/weaknesses:

STRENGTHS:
- Size
- Incredibly aggressive, and instinctive under the rim
- Nice mid-range shot and free throw %, but mostly grabs significant points in the paint- and does it with relative ease in that league
- Incredibly raw, and has one of the major intangibles needed (size); has added body weight and is becoming less of a stick man than before. Not Valde's size, but might project to that level
- Has been the focal point of an offense, and has delivered. Clearly a big player in Europe, and seen as a "comer"
- Natural shot-blocking ability, and can fly to a shot

WEAKNESSES:
- Passing abilities okay, but can make "hurried" passes that fly away
- Quick for his size, but by no means fast
- Drifts in and out of games sometimes; looks apathetic
- Hasn't dealt with big, muscle-bound bruisers like the NBA offers, and might not have the response mechanism to adjust
- Rebounds not a problem, but consistency in getting them can be- how will he fare when he's not the biggest guy on the court anymore?

IN SHORT:
Very good prospect, but any team drafting them is getting just that- a prospect. He's a great player, with God-given size and strength, but his ability to find mid-range shots and penetrate will be lessened in the NBA with the guards and centers he faces. Still, he is full of potential, and projects in skill-set as a cross between young Vlade and an early Portland-era Sabonis. You may have to wait to see it, but the possibility is there. He's been named to the Nike Exhibition team and we'll get a chance to see more soon. Time will tell.

Player like this would need big man coach and some time to develop. He is by far the best player of his age in Europe. Dominated U16,17,18,19 competition. NBA is a different animal. He plays like a big man, doesn't shoot threes.

Plus, he forms an important part of your nutritious breakfast!

Too soon?

He, by the way, didn't play a single second in both of the games, to my dismay. However, I did like Zeleznik's starting centre quite a lot, I think Raduljica was his name. Had great court vision and post offense, also a pretty good rebounder with nice size. I think his defense lacked at times and he wasn't as quick as I would like my starting centre to be, but he did have a great battle with Jason Boone.

Raduljica doesn't have NBA potential. He is decent.

Yeah, I agree. I just thought I should mention him. All in all, Zeleznik seems to be a good place to find centres. Do you have any idea why Musli didn't play in any of the games? Is it because the Euro Challenge, being the only competition that Zeleznik could win at that point, was too important for them and he was too young, or something? Just struck me as odd.
