Deadspin NBA **** List: Toney Douglas, The Little Engine That Couldn't

My impression so far has been that he's a quick point guard with a middling long-range shot and the basketball IQ of a blueberry pancake. He does a good job defending his man when his man has the ball and he doesn't get picked. I don't mind paying him league minimum to warm a bench as an injury replacement.

If the debate is whether to play Jimmer or Toney Douglas, we're in a rough spot to begin with. Douglas doesn't have any one thing he does very well. Jimmer can shoot the long ball well. If you can use that, play Jimmer. If you can't, play Tyreke more minutes.

From what I've seen of his play, and I'll grant you that I haven't been watching the Kings much since the trade, he falls victim to the same issues the rest of our no-defense playing team does. His rotations are questionable at best, and he gets picked easily. He's quick, so he can close out better than Jimmer, but if we're setting the bar at "Jimmer" we might as well stop pretending there is a bar.

I cannot let this go by without a bravo! It's funny tinged with a bit of sadness.

Douglas is a flat out good defender. Sometimes he is even great for stretches. Our defensive schemes are what they are, but this isn't a rookie here. Douglas has carried his defensive rep with him since college.
