Yep. Saw that too.

Rats, I was just about to get all happy...then I saw Crandall's name.

i wish i could find it online or something....if this quote is real...then this is a done deal...put a fork in anaheim

and notice how stern says "US" meaning he will be involved in the arena process...that makes me feel more confident athat the arena will get done!

im surprised more people arent getting more excited but i think they are holding off for na official announcement but inside they are all celebrating a miracle

I just can't get excited about anything that has the name Crandall associated with it. Last time I did it led to bitter disappointment!

This is starting to cook.

Here is what is funny, in Seattle Bennet was playing dumb while wanting to leave and Stern played bad cop and got direct and testy with the city. You build it, or we take it away.

Here, KJ has quietly painted the Maloofs as the bad cops, they want to go, but we will build and have a team with or without them ... and now Stern and Bennet play good cop and say, "Hey, we saved your team and gave you another shot. Look, if you work with us. It's all good. You'll probably keep the Kings, but one way or another we'll take care of you."

Funny/odd

I don't know the detail of what happened in Seattle, but I'm pretty sure they at least got the benefit of a one year deadline. That's all I've been saying for the last two months is that we at least deserve a deadline. if we can't meet it, i'll still hate to see them go, but at least it won't feel like they were stolen away from the city without us really having a chance.

Stern didn't exactly help much last time he got involved with an arena plan. Maybe this time will be different though with the new found unity of the region.

i wish i could find the whole quote

it was in espn's article from the associated press at 6:30 pm today

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=6404408

They're sort of verifying some of the representations by Mayor Johnson about how to produce so much in increased sponsorships, so much in increased ticket revenues," Stern said Thursday night in Philadelphia before the 76ers-Heat game. "And as a result, if the team does come back or stay in Sacramento for another year, it will not only be much better off financially, but it will also give us the time to deliver a deal on a regional basis for a new arena."

I think the biggest part is the regional basis. Bennett has already reported to Stern that things are different.

I'm finding it so hard to believe that's a direct quote from Stern -- it's like something out of a dream. Just how quickly momentum has shifted is straight out of a dream. I need to see some tape! I need to hear these words coming out of the man's mouth!

ok i think crandall took it out of context now that i look at the entire quote, it actually looks like stern is just saying what JOHNSON is saying..." JOHNSON is saying that if they come back theyll be better financially and gives US a chance to build an arena" hence the US isnt stern, its Johnson and sacramento....makes more sense...

That's what Crandall does best.

Hmmmm...guess who's coming to town for a meeting tomorrow with Bennett/Benjamin...why it's the MALOOFS! I REALLY wish I could be a fly on the wall during THAT meeting tomorrow!

My understanding is that meeting was on the schedule and only exact time was the issue. I know Maloofs were also scheduled to meet with gathered regional political and biz leaders today but backed out of that one. It still might happen too it would seem. Bottom line is, the Maloofs are not controlling events, maybe can influence some of it - but they've had it with the political infighting for a decade in Sac city and just want a new arena like apparently most everyone NOW does across entire region.

What makes you think the Maloofs still want a new arena here? Do we have anything to suggest that they won't just file for relocation regardless of what the BOG says and just hope they get the votes?

I understand Crandall's got credibility issues, but nothing was taken of out context. Read the ESPN article. Direct quote from Stern:

"They're sort of verifying some of the representations by Mayor Johnson about how to produce so much in increased sponsorships, so much in increased ticket revenues. And as a result, if the team does come back or stay in Sacramento for another year, it will not only be much better off financially, but it will also give us the time to deliver a deal on a regional basis for a new arena."

The crucial line is that last part, in which he's speaking for the NBA. I won't go so far as to say he was speaking for both the NBA and the Sacramento region, but he was not paraphrasing Johnson, either.

i doesnt seem like hes saying " i think sac will be better financially then anaheim and it gives US a better chance at an arena"...and when he says better off financially it doesnt necessarily mean better off than anaheim, he means better off than previous years...and it def sounds like hes just saying mayors points

no that last part definately seems like hes speaking for mayor johnson when he says :" it gives US the time to deliver.."

no i really think hes just reiterating what Johnson promised at the BOG meetings

That's still promising though. I'd read that as, if they see what they want to see in Sacramento, then they put the kibosh on Anaheim. I'm just afraid that the Maloofs will be defiant enough to just go ahead and file anyways and take a gamble on getting the votes.

no i really think hes just reiterating what Johnson promised at the BOG meetings

Dude come on. No. He's talking about how his guys went out there to CONFIRM what Johnson promised... and there's no way he'd speak like this unless there was some positive confirmation of some sort that got back to him. That what they spent the day doing. He's a very measured speaker, these are very timely comments, and his words are basically laying the ground for him to be able to say later... one more year, and this is why.

Who are you trying to convince here?

I just had this sent to your place -- check the mail in a couple of days.
