Average at best.
When it comes to lineup optimization, I say he's below average. Some of his lineups make no sense. He doesn't know how to stick with who's hot, he loves to continue playing players who are struggling.
He's going to make the youngin's lose all confidence. Malachi today scored 7 points in 8 minutes and never saw the floor again. How does stuff like this make any sense?
Our 3 point defense has also not improved, it's worst in the league. Teams and players are constantly breaking records against us.
The Kings also do not show-up against weak teams, this leads directly to coaching.

Offensively I'd say very good. Defensively I think some of the game plan in relation to guarding particular sets is more flawed than anticipated coming in. The 3 point defensive philosophy is especially worse than advertised. Part of that could be on the players but he consistently puts combinations of players out there that aren't reliable in defending pick and roll. In a guard dominated league that won't fly.

I said great because I think given the amount of time he has been with the team, I think he's doing great. I believe the Kings were in such a bad place when he took over that you can't expect magic to happen and to turn things around in half a season. I'm not saying he's perfect though, just doing a great job so far, all things considered.

This is a BAD team. But they end every game competing. Besides the early Casspi and Afflalo whispers, everybody seems to be on the same page. Plus Cuz likes him.
Just good enough to look like they're making a playoff run, while still able to keep the top 10 pick. Tolliver and Temple sticking around to keep the good vibes culture change next year.

I say average. People have touched upon his pros (we scrap and compete, he's definitely establishing a culture), and cons (line ups)....
But really, I think it's too soon to tell. Defense especially takes time. And our roster remains horrendous. With Rudy out, this is probably the last talented group of his we've ever had around Cuz.
Speaking of Cuz, he likes Joerger, so that's a plus.
It'll be fun to revisit this thread at the end of the season. I still have high hopes for Joerger. Vlade just needs to somehow start throwing a roster together.

Which, if we're grading on a Kings coaching curve, means "Great"! It's been a long while since we've had "average" around these parts.

Competent, holding locker room together, has them playing hard most nights, rookies & WCS growing some.
With what we have to offer a coach I'd say he is doing an above average job, but certainly not very good.

Competing hard - swell. They're supposed to do that as millionaire NBA players. Cuz likes him - great. But #15 doesn't have to like him yet still be all star and growing as a team leader. Lousy roster overall with too many injuries - tough luck. But another season of 29 wins or 32 wins or whatever it ends up rather disappointing where judged by only one thing in the end - Ws. Now if somehow Kings miraculously grab last WC playoff spot would definitely grade higher. But at this point Joerger has turned in average performance.

I guess a decade of losing and incompetencies and sabotages along the way has messed with this fan base's logic. In order to learn how to win, you need to learn how to compete first and there is no doubt this team is learning that.
This season while disappointing in terms of record, has been a season not dissimilar to Mike Malone's first season here. The team might be bi-polar but one thing has been consistent, the team will continue to compete no matter if they are up 30 or down by 30. The young players are coming along and that is on the coaching staff. If everything, absolutely everything was to go right for us this season, we sneak into the 8th spot. With a few things going against us we are still not out of it albeit with a losing record and looking more and more unlikely.
But there have been clear positives so far this season and while it hasn't exactly translated to wins, it has been apparent to anyone paying any attention. While the season in terms of wins and losses has not been too dissimilar to past two seasons, everything else has. The vibe and everything around this team has been chalk and cheese compared to past two years.

I chose average, but I think he's a notch above that. I just did a quick list of NBA coaches and labeled then 1-5 and he comes up right in the middle of that group. So as far as NBA coaches go he's average. He probably could sniff the top 10, but he's not better than the following coaches

Joerger is a phenomenal coach. We are very lucky to have him. Can you imagine if this team actually had talent outside of DMC?

As of now, I'd say average. You have to give credit because the team competes almost every game considering the lack of talented personnel they have on this team. I'm sure he can do more with better players and then we can see what he is really made of. I do however want to see him play the younger players more and give them longer leashes if they get more performances as they did last night with the lackluster energy and disheartening effort. Atleast the youngins' will play hard and scrap. That said, I have no complaints about Dave as of now, he is here for the long term I hope and that's one important aspect of eventually building a winner.
I'm on the average bandwagon and I only say that for a couple reasons.
One, I think Lawson should be starting with Collison coming off the bench and even joining him in a decent amount of small balling against teams where the matchups are there. Collison is a SG IMO and the best offensive SG on the team. Lawson just makes everyone better while Collison makes no one better but he's one of the most efficient guys at the PG position in the league.
Second, I'm not a fan of his rotations. I'd like to see Kofous and WCS paired up more for defense. Would like to see Malachi play more as well. Yeah he's going to make some stupid mistakes like stepping out of bounds, the two turnovers and the 3 fouls but he still held his composure and put up 7 points on 5 shots. Would have been 10 points on 6 shots if his heel wasn't out of bounds. Let the kid work through his growing pains because Afflalo has about one decent game a week and McLemore has had one good half in the last couple months.
With that said, in the last 20 years the only 3 coaches I haven't wanted gone have been Adelman, Malone and Joerger.

This is one of the worst rosters we have had in the past few years, with aging vets and players that were good earlier in their careers but not anymore. Our best 2 guard is out for a few more weeks and our best SF/2nd best player is out for the entire season but still we are hanging tough. Demarcus Cousins of old would have quit on this team a month or two ago, but he continues to fight as well. I attribute that to the coaching staff. Not everything is about Xs and Os when you look at a coach. Joerger is a vet coach and likes his vets, but he's learning too and is allowing the young guys to chip in slowly and surely. He's molding them and I think he deserves the right to say when he wants them to play and when he doesn't. Perhaps the reason Malachi looks so good in spurts is because he doesn't play extended minutes. Maybe if he did he would play worse.
Anyways, I am happy with the coach. He clearly knows what he's doing and even with a disaster of a roster we are still fighting hard. No team out works or out fights us. Now, if we can bring up the talent level and continue this philosophy, then the sky is the limit. One of my favorite things about Joerger is no drama. He is a pretty great coach. The Kings are in every game. They play hard all the time. They compete. They try to play defense. They move the ball and move without the ball.
They have trouble closing which comes with experience.

Why can't Coach make this team realize that they need to play 48 minutes of solid basketball to win?
This team does not get it. They are not good enough to spot other teams 10-20 points each game and try to mount a 4th quarter comeback!!!
Plain and simple. The Kings need a sense of urgency from the starting tip off. They need to play a solid 48 minute game each night to win!!!
Maybe the Starting line up needs to be shaken up a bit and put some of our energizer players, Lawson, Casspi or WCS in the starting 5 to get this team going early.

It's a process. At least they're finding a way to get back into games and be competitive.
I think some are ignoring the fact that we presently are without Omri, Rudy and Temple, which means coach is constantly having to shuffle lineups to find the best combination for that game.
Things are improving. I know it seems like forever, but Joerger has only been our coach for 52 games. Players are beginning to get his message, as evidenced by WCS for example, but it's definitely still a work in progress.

I like him because he seems to be an honest guy, and he makes it a point to never throw anyone under the bus during interviews.

I said Average simply because Good was not an option. I like a lot of what he is doing, but think it is too early to say Very good or Great.
