Danny Ainge Wanted Tyreke Evans

Some of us remember discussing rumors of the Celtics trying hard to see if they can move up in last year's draft. The reason as it confirms was to get Tyreke Evans and the Celtics gave it serious thoughts and was willing to give up Rajon Rondo to ensure getting Tyreke.

For those of you that still don't believe in Tyreke, this should tell you how good he is.

Apparently at last year's combine.....

"The Celtics employ consultant Dr. Jon Niednagel, known as “The Brain Doctor,” to help determine a player’s cerebral toughness. Last year at the combine, he said Tyreke Evans would win Rookie of the Year."

We actually knew this already. Or at least the peeps around the board this time last year. Forgot who reported on it back then, but that was always the deal. Was just explaining that to my mom a couple of weeks ago in fact.

Well except for The Brain Doctor ~ MUHAHAHAHA! ~ of course.

Yeah, I remember discussing it here a while back. But just wanted to throw it out there since its now a fact as opposed to rumors. Remember Ainge denied wanting to trade Rondo back then. Of course thats GM talk.

The brain doctor part is crazy haha. This guy could tell Tyreke was the type thats going to be calm and be able to step up just by his movements and answer to questions. He picked the ROY at the combine. I would like GP to get his hands on this doctor's report on this yr's draft before June 24th just as a second opinion. :D

Too bad we could have had Rondo if Douby wasn't picked.

do you honestly think he would've developed into the player he is now under musselman/theuss? he is surrounded by veterans and great ones at that. that helps relieve the pressure on him as the lead guard. toss the ball to reef for an assist or the big ticket? douby was a bad pick but i don't know how rondo would've turned out in sacramento

Rondo proved to be a great player and has still a lot of space for improvement.
But lets be honest-having Pierce, Garnett, Allen, Sheed etc. playing with and around him....its easier to shine..

Not sure if this is sarcasm since both don't have established jumpshots but the trade rumor was rondo for Evans.

The thought was if we had drafted Rondo instead of Douby, and then also drafted Evans (probably unlikely, since we wouldn't have needed Tyreke as much if we'd drafted Rondo).

I just like that idea, a whole lot. You're right, they both have suspect jumpshots, but they're also both really, really good players than can produce even without being consistent shooters.

Of course as always wiht those sorts of things, drafting rondo ratehr than Douby might have changed the direction of the franchise enough that we would not have been in position to draft Tyreke. And of course with Rondo back there trying to cover for Kevin's defense we likely call the backcourt set...although I have no idea what that would have meant in the past draft wiht Thabeet already off the board. Jordan Hill?

Just a thought:

Do you think he would still give up Rondo for Tyreke ?

Would you ?

Woudl we what?

Would we deal Evans for Rondo? Absolutely not.

Would Ainge deal Rondo for Evans? be a PR bloodbath, but he absolutley should if he's smart. The current core will be gone in 2 years, and they will need a repalcement superstar or face a long cold drought. Rondo is a great player, but he can't carry you once the old folks are gone.

I absolutely wouldn't either, but with the media making these playoffs Rondo's coming out of a "superstar", I was just curious how they would value him./

Yup, Evans > Rondo. But before Evans even played a min of pro ball, Ainge was willing to trade his somewhat proven young star of a point guard. A lot of confidence in his own judgement of talent.

Not quite I think --- I thought that according to reports Ainge pondered but balked. But who knows. Maybe he said I want #4 and we said we want Rondo. Maybe he said do you want Rondo for the #4 and we said no. Will never know. Just that there were discussions.
