Last night, during the Monarchs game, I was talking in the KingsFans chat room about my favorite cover songs, and as I listed some of them, I realized that, while I don't generally care for covers and remakes as a rule, among the ones I *do* like, many of them I prefer to the original song. So, I thought I'd list the cover songs that I like better than the original, and ask if any of you have some as well...

My top ten, in no particular order:

Boyz II Men, of The Beatles' "Yesterday"
Johnny Cash, of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt"
Caron Wheeler, of Stevie Wonder's "Another Star"
Santa Esmeralda, of The Animals' "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood"
Sergio Mendes & the Black Eyed Peas, of Jorge Ben's "Mas Que Nada"
Boyz II Men, of New Edition's "Can You Stand the Rain"
Boyz II Men, of Bobby Caldwell's "What You Won't Do For Love"
Mary J. Blige, of Rose Royce's "I'm Going Down"
Soul IV Real, of Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine"
Ray Charles, of Hoagy Charmichael's "Georgia on my Mind"

Great thread .... I gotta do some homework before I post

I can think of one off-hand ... Jimi Hendrix with The Star Spangled Banner ... actually, the traditional one is still great (depending upon the circumstances) ... but, being a guitarist - gotta go with Jimi

I second the Johnny Cash "Hurt" cover.

Also the Red Hot Chili Peppers' cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" has always been a fave of mine.

You're both crazy; Marvin Gaye > *.*
I love Marvin Gaye, and if he were the only person to have ever recorded "Heard It Through the Grapevine," I'd be okay. But Gladys' version trumps it ever so slightly.

Now, crazy would be claiming that the California Raisins did the best version.

Don't know if I like this one better, necessarily, so I submit the following as a cover I liked as much as the original:

- Fiona Apple's cover of "Across The Universe" by The Beatles

Nirvana - The Man Who sold the World (Bowie)

"Rusty Cage" was a Sound Garden tune, "Rowboat" was Beck. Johnny did ton of covers towrds the end prety much stole each tune and made it his own in doing so.

I would also add the Nick Cave tune "Mercy Seat" to list of Grand Theft Cash songs!

Are these Johnny Cash covers all on one album, such as one his greatest hits compilations?

Doubtful. But I think they all stem from the latter part of his life -- in the 10-12 years through the 90's and into the new millenium he put out a series of albums full of covers of various songs that touched him.

Some of these covers can be found on the 4 disc set "Unearthed" which comes with a 5 star rateing from HndsmCelt ;) One particular jewl on it is a duet with Johnny and Joe Strummer doing Bob Marley's Redemption Song. The rest turn up on the 4 or 5 recording entitled CASH (with various subtttles). Having some where arround 25 or so fo Johnny's albums I'd have to sa the ONE collection I could not live with out is CASH Unearthed.
