Wow, a few surprises. But for the most part, teams took care of teams they were supposed to beat. ASU beat #12 Iowa 44-7. Little bit out of left field. Auburn over LSU wasn't a true upset, but it was still surprising. I thought Florida would beat Tennessee, but I was definitely wrong on that one.
Abe, 'Bama was looking good, but now that Croyle is out for the season, and with the meat of the SEC schedule coming up, I'm not sure how it'll shake out. I had Auburn beating LSU and 'Bama beating Auburn, being the dark horse winner of the SEC West, but now, I'm not sure that they'll have the experienced leadership they need. That sucks, because I hate Auburn. UT and Auburn are likely going to play for the SEC crown, because if Georgia keeps playing like they are, Tennessee can take a shot at them.
ACC ball is much more "in question" than I thought it would be. Virginia Tech looks solid, Miami is Miami, minus their normally terrific offense, and FSU is going to dominate everyone that doesn't hail from Coral Gables, as always. I'm convinced that Miami sold its' collective soul to the devil, because this year, FSU is more talented and more experienced, and still couldn't handle Miami in a "down" year. NC State was a team that I thought had a longshot at the ACC title, but losing to Ohio State tarnishes that. This Buckeye team just isn't all that impressive. Georgia Tech is my 4th candidate to come out of the ACC on top. There's a lot of talent in Atlanta right now, and they throw a lot of mismatches with their zone blocking schemes.
Big 12 is the Big 12. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas will battle for the South. Nebraska and Kansas State will battle for the North. Texas will choke and receive its annual stomping from the Sooners. Callahan will prove he's an idiot by continually putting one of the best defenses in the nation into horrible field positions, and using a bunch of option players and road grading run blockers to play in some ridiculous NFL west coast scheme. A team from Oklahoma comes out on top.
Pac 10 continues to be ridiculously underrated. Every one of these ten teams can play with anybody in the country, and they've proved it in head to head competition against some of the best in the nation. The Oregon-Oklahoma game was close up until the fourth, ASU demolished #12 Iowa and beat Northwestern handily, Arizona gave Utah and particularly #21 Wisconsin all they could handle. UCLA lost to a VERY good and VERY underrated Oklahoma State team, but handled Illinois and Washington. USC is USC. Washington St. has made some mental lapses, but their defense can play with anyone. Boise St. game aside, Oregon State almost beat #4 LSU, and that's showing you can play with anyone. Stanford and Cal have yet to play real teams, but have looked very good. Ultimately, though, ASU, Cal, and USC turn this into a three horse race. They're just that good.
The Big 10 is random. The Pac-10 has been administering its annual close games and demolitions of the supposed power conference, while some of the frontrunners lose to teams they should beat and have close games with teams that really aren't that good. Michigan loses to Notre Dame and then has all they can handle with San Diego State 24-21. I had them as a potential Orange Bowl team, too. I still think they win the Big 10, but this conference has yet to impress me this year.
Notre Dame is looking like Notre Dame again. If they play up to their talent, they can beat anyone in the country.
The Big East sucks. Period.
Conference USA is much better than the Big East. Memphis has a great chance at making a BCS bowl. UAB has a ton of experience on offense and can score on most anybody. I really like TCU, even after that loss to Texas Tech. You can't ever count them out of a game, but their secondary is weak. Poor SMU. Remember when they were a great team? The sanctions murdered their program.
Spoilers of the Year : As good as Boise St. looked against Oregon St., Fresno St., TCU, Memphis, and Troy are the real upset special teams to watch for. Those four will play anybody anywhere, and have the talent to beat anyone, anywhere.
That got long, but enjoy college football. Greatest sport on earth!
