Chris Kaman

What about doing a one year rental of Chris Kaman? I can't imagine it would take much to get him. The Hornets aren't going anywhere this year and I'm sure Stern would like to move Kaman for some young talent. The Kings have a ton of young talent to offer. JT, Whiteside, greene, Honeycutt, Thomas, etc.

I'm sure Stern would rather trade Okafor for young talent rather than Kaman because of their contract statuses. Kaman would help us here, though.

But Okafor would be harder to move. If he could get some young talent for Kaman i think he'd see that as a good move for the Hornets. He sheds 12$ million for a player they never really wanted in the first place and gets a couple nice young players in return.

Kaman is a better defender than Boogie or Hickson. I'm just looking at him as a one year stop gap because of the Hayes and Dalembert situation.
But is our frontline better defensively for it, with Cousins now chasing pf's around the perimeter, because Kaman is down low?

If we get a big-man from New Orleans, I'd want it to be Okafor.
It's a massive contract, and it's far over-paying for him, but I think he could be a steady interior presence for us for the next couple of years.
He understands what his role is.

Kaman is a very good big, but he's far more offensive-minded that Okafor and would want his shots. Plus, it would likely be a one-year rental and we'd have to start the search all over again next season.

I'd like to solidify the front-line as soon as possible, so that the team can then begin to just settle in and learn to play with one-another. Bringing in Okafor could do that.

Okafor's salary scares me a bit. And no I would not be against giving that sort of money to the right player but I just don't think he is that player. Sure he is an interior defender, rebounds, blocks shots but I don't think Okafor and Cousins could play together defensively. I don't think either of them can guard some PFs. The player that we pair Cousins with need to be able to do all those things I mentioned at the start but he also needs to be athletic, mobile and long enough to guard both PFs and Cs. Someone like Amare would give both Cousins and Okafor fits where as Dalembert could guard Amare.

If they can't play together then all of a sudden that contract of Okafor's becomes a waste of cap space for us because there is no way that you will sit Cousins to give Okafor minutes. He is way too mechanical to be able to give us the sort of versatility that we need from that front court player. The problem is, the sort of players that could fit with Cousins are also integral to their team and there is no way they are getting traded (Noah, Horford, Chandler, Jordan, and Dalembert  ).

Its not just a case of picking up a big guy that can block shots. It is also very important whether that player can play with Cousins both offensively and defensively.

After reading these notes, I can see the wisdom of getting Hayes especially if all signs were that Daly was leaving. Sigh.

I can understand full well that we need a guy next to Cousins who can guard PFs and it seems this discussion doesn't contain such a person.

What makes you say this? Okafor is quite mobile and almost identical in height, weight, style of play, and per48 reb/blocks/points. Plus he's 18 months younger.

The length of his contract is key - 3 years which means it ends right as Cousins extension kicks in. It is high $$, but the fact that it is high makes it more attainable.
