Hey Monarchs fans! I'm a RU WCB fan who's been reading this board from afar recently, and I must say it's been a joy to read. Chelsea Newton was always my favorite player for RU, and I'm thrilled she's in Sacramento. As someone who's seen the successes and failures of a number of RU alumni in the WNBA, I know a lot has to do with the situation a player is placed in, and I've always thought Chelsea fits in great in Sacramento.
Though Chelsea is primarily known for her defensive talents and non stop hussle (justifiably), she has a lot more offensive talent than many give her credit for. She was an All American coming out of high school, but injuries really plagued a lot of her offensive play sometimes in college. There would be games though where she just looked unstoppable, scoring from all spots on the floor. I see she got 2 3's in the first game, and she was never known as s 3-pt shooter at RU, so this just shows the multifacetness of her game. I alwasy felt her money shot was the mid-range baseline jumper, but she's also fantastic running the break. She's also a much better FT shooter then you've seen so far in Sacramento, as she usually averaged close to 80% in college.
Of course, Chelsea's main value to RU was in leadership. During her junior year, where she missed 12 games and CAppie Pondexter was named an all american, it was Chelsea who was named team MVP, because she has always been the glue of the team. Chelsea is lucky to be in such a great community and with such a great team as Sacramento, but I believe Sacramento is very lucky to have Chelsea.
And, you now have quite a few fans in NJ rooting for the Monarchs!
