Carlesimo to Be Named Sonics' Head Coach

I have to say, I really hate the moves the Sonics have made this offseason. They trade Ray Allen for Wally (who still has two years left on his deal) and then promptly use the #5 pick on a guy who plays the same position as the franchise player they just drafted. Then they allow Rashard Lewis to walk. Now they hire PJ.

So, to recap, they turned Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis into Jeff Green and the corpse of Wally Szczerbiak. Yikes.

Report: Spurs assistant Carlesimo to be named Sonics coach

SEATTLE -- The Seattle SuperSonics have scheduled a Thursday news conference amid reports that the team has hired P.J. Carlesimo as its new head coach.
Team officials are refusing to comment on a report appearing on the San Antonio Express-News Web site, which says Carlesimo has been chosen by Sonics' ownership.
Carlesimo has been an assistant the last five seasons in San Antonio and before that was a head coach in Portland and Golden State.
Carlesimo and former Minnesota coach Dwane Casey have been considered the two front-runners for the position. The Sonics fired Bob Hill on April 24.

I agree. I cannot, for the life of me figure out the Green draft pick at #5. I can understand passing on Yi, given the relatively similar game to Durant, but I though Noah would have been a great building block for them as a PF/C of the future.

Yep -- truly bizarre. Teh drafting of Green by itself was just a WHAT??? after you take Durant. That jsut had to be a big. But nope. Now good luck to them wiht this hire. It is really very disappointing to me that fortson is no longer wiht the team. That could have been great stuff.

And for all the young talent flooding into the West, when you get down to it in the space of a week FOUR 20pt scorers have been shipped out East (Allen, Lewis, Richardson, Randolph). Maybe finally one of those offseasons that balances things out a little.

As an aside, minor point but possible anyway: by removing two fo the shooting guards ahead of him in the pecking order (Ricahrdson and Allen) also ups the chance of Kevin being an All Star at some point here. Will still need to be oin a winning team probably, but the competition is mostly out East. Question will just be with Kobe and then so many great PGs if the All Star roster isn't composed almost entirely of PGs (Nash, Parker, Williams, Baron, Paul etc.). Roy...A.I....ok, maybe things haven't opened up THAT much, but it is two less guys.

Well, they do already have several guys they have sunk 1st round picks into in the hustle/defense/rebounding project center mold, though none have the track record that Noah has.

I agree that the Green pick was a bit of a head scratcher though.

Rashard is over paid for what he does. So is VC.

Wally makes less and has 2 years remaining. His contract becomes attractive in one year. And if they keep it, they are under the cap by a great amount.

They don't want Ridnour, but they do like Delonte West.

There's no point in keeping Allen who's best years are going down. He's just going to cost money and probably get injured once again. Better to start building a nice core around Durant and Green.

Presti knows what he is doing. He was a big part of the Spurs front office in the past years till he has moved on now. Same with Pritchard in Portland..

I am still scratching my head over Green. Now, with PJ, I am  .

BTW - the mental image of Fortson on PJ's team was just too much. Chocking? That's nothing. Fortson would kill him.

what do gregg popovich, pat riley, larry brown, phil jackson, and chuck daly have in common? two things. they won almost all the nba titles since 1986. they are my way or the highway coaches. carlesimo's problem is he pulled it with losers like spree and strickland.

btw, fortson is gone.

That is just flat out wrong: Daly and Pj were/are both players coaches/negotiators, not dictators. There is no common denominator there. Pop would never be able to deal with Rodman. PJ and Daly? Its just Dennis being Dennis. Let alone of course Pop and Riles at least increasingly forming bonds with their players off the court.

And Carlesimo's probnlem, other than just being a complete ****, was that he had absolutely no credibility WHILE being a complete ****. Just another insecure little college wannabe thinking he was the big man because he could scream at teenagers. Did not play at the next level.

Now we get to see if he's learned anything. Durant is young, but he's also the franchise. If you lose him as the coach, you've just lost your job, San Anotonio philes or not.

PJC is a college coach. He only gets spots for demolished franchises. Teams figure he'll whip young guys into shape/submission/whoknows. He'll be traded in for a more player friendly guy when the Sonics start showing promise (or if Durant starts getting chaffed).

Interesting how Sonics management is turning into Spurs West with the owner, coach and Gm having spent time with the Spurs. It will be fun to watch Durant and Green develop under a good teacher . Seattle might have kept wise to keep lewis to help 2 young guys grow lil bit . But hey, they might know what they are doing by going young and clearing cap space .
