If it's true that Chris Webber resorted to old form, running his mouth much better than we saw him running the floor in the last 21 games of the 76ers' regular season and in the playoffs, mere criticism is too good for him. He needs to be insulted. Excoriated. Dragged through basketball purgatory for insulting a superstar who made Webber look much better than his own health would allow.

"But none of it is true," Webber said yesterday in a telephone interview.

Webber was talking about a report in Sunday's New York Daily News that had him wanting out of Philadelphia. It said Webber confided in a friend that he wanted out because of Allen Iverson, because the Sixers' mercurial star dribbles too much, and that he would be willing to take a cut from his remaining $62 million over the next three years to do so.

It never mentioned coach Jim O'Brien as a reason, either.

"I'm telling you I never said that b.s. about A.I.," Webber said vehemently over and over again, adding that he already had called Iverson. "I love A.I. I love being back East. I've got no problems with Allen and I don't know where the hell anybody got that from.

"I have a problem with me. I've got a problem with the fact that I can't run the way I used to, that my legs aren't as strong as they need to be, that my game isn't where it needs to be for me to be what I used to be. And that's what I'm determined to work on.

"My plan is to take two weeks off. After that, I'm back in the gym working on my body, getting in tip-top shape so I can show this town what I'm all about. As for all that talk about me saying something about A.I., that's a... lie. The person I have the biggest problem with is me."

Give Webber this much credit: He's no fool.

After averaging just 15.6 points on 39 percent shooting in the regular season for the Sixers, then acting as if he were allergic to post play in a first-round loss to the Pistons, Webber knows that dissing "The Answer" won't get him anywhere.

How could it, when Iverson led the NBA in scoring again? When he averaged 31 points and 10 assists in the playoffs? When he never failed to utter words of support for Webber, even as the former Fab Five member looked far from fabulous with each passing game?

Talking about Iverson won't get Webber anywhere in a town whose credo runs one word shy of Janet Jackson's "What Have You Done For Me Lately?" challenge. But who knows what it eventually will do for him if he talks about O'Brien.

Webber isn't fond of O'Brien. Plain and simple. While it's been said that Webber mentioned Iverson's propensity to shoot too much and always pass later near season's end, I've heard it's O'Brien he blamed for his travails. Not Iverson.

Webber believes that Iverson only does what O'Brien plans for him to do, that his desire to be a facilitator was squelched immediately upon his arrival, which set the stage for some of his struggles. He doesn't believe that O'Brien can be talked to or reached, that the coach is even remotely interested in ingratiating himself with his players. That's one of the reasons a few players privately intimated they would inquire about O'Brien's future in Philadelphia once the season ended.

"Well, no player has approached me yet," Billy King, the Sixers' president and general manager, said yesterday after returning from a weeklong vacation. "No one has asked anything about him."

If you're O'Brien, that's great news. Who knows what it is for Iverson? And if you're Webber, one of two things is happening right now:

You're bordering on misery, or you are preoccupied with acting lessons to hide it very well.

Regardless of how true his affection for Iverson is, it's pretty difficult to show your unhappiness with the coach when you are unable to use a 6-foot-10, 245-pound body to your advantage because of injury, and are forced to rely on jump shots your coach, teammates, the fans and even you yourself are tired of seeing.

In 11 seasons, everyone swears they've never seen Webber so ineffective, so limited, so willing to relegate himself to stand-up jump-shooter.

"They've seen enough of it, and so have I," Webber said. "I'm hungry. I know what I've got to do and I'm going to do it. I've got to get in better shape, play better, and remind everyone of what I can do.

"Playing is the way to do it, not talking about your teammates. Especially A.I., who's helped me more than anybody."

Finally! Something we want to hear.

I hope he does get healthier and stronger and I didn't believe that article in the Daily News. He's frustrated in the way he's playing and that's sad to see. He won't be as great as he used to be because of his knee but he can be a lot better than he was after the trade. I've said all along his problem is with the coach not AI. Although AI does make it hard for anyone to play with him.

I don't understand. The guy should have made the All-star team the first half of the season and the second it all goes to hell. That tells me a few things. #1 Rick Adelman has to be given a lot of credit for being able to coach a guy like Webber and help him succeed. And #2 that Webber is still a very good player if used to his strengths. Everyone wants him to dominate the post but that has never really been his game anyway and with the knee most likely never will be.

Feel free to discredit me all you want, but my coworker's husband coaches track with CWebb's cousin. Recently, her husband and the cousin went to New York City with CWebb. They went to ESPNZone and Scores (a popular strip club). CWEbb didn't bash AI at all but he mentioned that he would like to play for the Lakers (maybe he thinks Kobe will share the ball better than AI).

Personally, I don't think it matters where Chris wants to go, because he isn't getting out of Philly with 3 years and $63million left on his contract.

"but he mentioned that he would like to play for the Lakers "

Please God no! If there is God in heaven...keep him away from LA!!

Took him only 18 months to figure this one out:rolleyes:

Too late for us but maybe not for Philly

And yet he would fit perfectly.

This isnt any new revelation to him, he said the same thing after every game he played as a King over the last year and half. People who did not like him tended to ignore these ommisions. But I sure appreciated him for giving us his all.

You know what? This whole unending hatred thing you have about Webber is sad. Why? Because you continue to post your venom in thread after thread, ruining good discussions because you can't get over something that is finished and done.

Give it a rest, piksi...

Chris Webber did a lot of good for our franchise and for those of us lucky enough to see him play in person it was something we will never forget. He's not the anti-Christ. He was a true warrior, dedicated to this team as much as any King has ever been and much more than some.

I'm asking as a Kings fan, long-time member of Kingsfans.com and moderator of same for you to please let it go. We all know you hate him - you've made it your reason to exist for a very long time - and we don't expect your feelings to change.

If you are only going to speak your same tired vitriol, please refrain. You made your point. You hate Chris Webber. All you do by continuing to beat the very dead horse is to tempt people into retaliating by saying something against Peja and that simply is not in the best interests of the board.

I've asked you repeatedly via PMs to stop with the hate talk and it hasn't done any good. I'm hoping this public request might make the difference.

Let people who want to discuss Webber's current situation do so without you stirring the pot and brining up the same old comments that do nothing to further the discussion.

I don't know about anyone else - and I'm certainly not trying to speak for them - but I would certainly appreciate it.

I feel bad about the situation Webb has been in this year. He's one of my favorite players of all time, and having him traded compounded by him struggling so much in Philly made it really hard for me to watch.

I hope he comes back stronger next year & that Mo Cheeks finds a better way to use him then Obrien ever managed. Webb is not 100% of what he was presurgery, but he still has an incredible amount to contribute.

Webb in LA???? God I hope not. I said I'd love him and root for him wherever he goes but I have my limits. I cannot bring myself to root for them. my heart broke enough Feb 23 but that move would shatter it in tiny pieces. I just don't see why he would want that. I'm hoping Mo as a new coach will help his situation and he'll want to stay there but time will tell. I wish him well wherever he may end up. I agree the end of the season was painful to watch but I'm confident next year will be better.

Look at it this way: Webber could well have said he would have liked to play with the Lakers with Shaq and Kobe. Or he could have said he would have liked to play with the Lakers when Jackson was the coach.

I'm not trying to discredit you, but the whole thing is without any context at all so I don't think people should read much into it.

He was talking about playing for the Lakers now.

If you want, I can order you a transcript of the entire conversation. Just send $5.00 to the Team Dime Foundation. :)

I agree. Piksi does a very good pregame thread analysis, but the Webber bashing can tend to get old; almost like an Ailene Voison thing. It may be no secret that I'm not too fond of Peja, but I was impressed and gave him his rightful due for his game 5 performance.

On a lighter note......C-Webbs house is on the block and it says you have to be "financially qualified" to get in and take a look. Anyone here fit into that category??? :p

maybe if we combine assets??:p I'd love to take a look inside though.

SIGH... it makes me sad that the house is on the market.... I guess he's really not coming back....

I thought he was going to come back and continue his charity work?? He could stay with the garbage bag I guess. lol I'd love to see that house also. I wonder how much it's going for. Someone here chould go check it out.

Chris's for sale home

Your wish is granted. (link contains story and video). Not 1, not 2 but 3 different news programs did stories on it. It is a very very nice looking home and not that highly priced. Not a lot of total property (1.5 acres), but the house more than makes up for it. Chris has really good taste.

Thanks reina, I knew someone would come through. That house is beautiful. I loved the fountain. It's a shame he's selling it after putting in all that hard work designing everything. Why doesn't he keep it and stay there during the off season and when he retires?

There's nothing to keep him coming here, loopy. His heart is in Detroit; his team is in Philadelphia. He grew to love Sacramento because of the Kings, the fans, etc. but there's no reason to think he'd want to live here.

He said more than once he hoped he had earned the right to retire as a King. That was taken away - and I can fully understand him not wanting to retain a lot of ties here. He can afford to buy and renovate another home, much closer to his family and friends - and I'm sure he will.

That reminds me. Did "we" ever get around to building that Soul Food restaurant for him?
