LAS VEGASJon Brockman rushed his burly frame down the floor at UNLV's Cox Pavilion early Wednesday afternoon, the Kings rookie forward sprinting before stopping just in time to be leveled by what appeared to be a classic charge.
First-year coach Paul Westphal, not far away, offered his enthusiastic approval during the Kings' first summer league practice.

Hawes not playing in the summer league

http://www.sacbee.com/kings/story/2011767.html

Huge bummer if he doesn't play... seems like a lot of drama for no reason on Hawes part.

Normally I would totally understand a 3rd yr player sitting it out but with Tyreke Evans being the probable starting PG. JT being the starting PF, along with Casspi, Greene, and Brokman as also being roster players. This move is a huge let down, and the coaches and Petrie are obviously bummed.

If he didn't want to play he should of said so in the first place, seems Petrie more than anyone wasn't too pleased with it.

He should be playing, he's gonna be there anyway. :/

Maybe the team is disappointed, but a third year player in summer league is pushing it anyway. When Martin and Douby played in year 3, that only gave us two or three roster guys on our SL team. This year, we have several guys who are either on or have a chance of making our roster, even without Spencer. If we had JT and Hawes both starting, it would be tough to get extended looks at Brockman and Bryant, plus Donte/Omri who should probably see some time at PF.

The Kings are trying to land a backup center... why have the starting center play at all? Let the prospects get in there to show their stuff. Also, this helps Brockman's summer league playing time quite a bit; coincidence? I THINK NOT!

So the young guys, especially Evans and Casspi can get used to playing with the center that will be on the court most of the time.

This is as much prep for training camp as it is to see prospects. This may be Hawes 3rd year, but for all intensive purposes it's his 2nd. The 1st year was a throw away, because of his knee.

I think its fair for Petrie to be upset at Hawes. New coach on the worst team in the league.....maybe Hawes might lose his starting spot.

Plus his age he should be there.

If I'm Westphal I have Hawes as #2 on the depth chart going into camp and make him earn the starters spot.

There are a couple different way to look at it ..

By Hawes not playing, he's giving Brockman more time to prove himself and make the team, but on the other hand wouldnt Hawes want to play side by side with his buddy again?

Hawes is a semi proven player by now, and I really dont care if he plays one way or the other .. I said it before and I'll say it again - I rather see more of Brockman and more of Greene / Casspi at PF than see Spencer play at Center, Let JT play some Center with bryant and give most of the PF minutes to Brockman/JT/Greene/ Casspi ...

Not me at all...
WTF has Hawes proved to anyone to give him a pass this summer. YOUR TEAM WON 17 GAMES BRO! Seems to me you need all the practice you can get.

Didn't we go through this last year when he wouldn't run sprints. And, didn't he end up having a pretty good year. How many 20pt games did he have in the last month. It's a lot of theatrics over something that will have no bearing on the season. According to Brockman the two of them are working hard.

For everyone who has a good reason why he should be there, the fact is that he's not required to be there. And, if he feels like he shouldn't play, I'll honor his decision.

I guess Martin and Nocioni need to be there too, because the rookies need to get used to the SG and SF that will play most of the time and those guys were also on a 17 win team.

If he he feels like he shouldn't play?... what kind of example is that for our rookies? Like I said before, I don't give a damn about how many 20 point games he had, fact is, his team was the worst team in the entire league. He should be working harder then everyone out there right now.

I agree. I am disappointed that Hawes chose not to play in the summer games. Just like he chose not to run sprints last year.

I think Petrie is upset for two reasons. Number one he wanted all the young guys to get a jump on the new system that Westphal is installing. Number two, if he wasn't going to play, then he should have imformed Petrie. Then Petrie could have filled his spot with another rookie center. To me, its more about lack of respect for the organization, than about whether he plays or not.

I can see your point. So, let's start a post defaming Martin for not playing in the summmer league. He didn't play much last year and finished the year injured. He should be out there getting into shape. He's the veteran star of this team. What a poor example he is to the other players.

By the way, your boss wants you to work the next 10 Saturdays. And, your not going to get paid anything extra for it.

who cares.... as long as he is ready for preseason and doesnt get injured i am okay.... what will he gain by playing against other scrubs and players that wont make it in the nba?

Cosign.

whatever, im not upset about it. we already know what Hawes can do on the court. Now we get more playing time for the rooks which is more important to the team right now.

Spencer better produce this year. People aren't going to cut him any slack anymore, now that he's a third year and he also decided to skip out on summer league.

I don't know about the rest of you guys but I don't think anybody cuts Spencer "slack". I don't think we've had to. To ask him to come in and start for Brad Miller in his second year and put up the numbers he did "especially in the latter half of the season" is quite enough for me. The last month or two of the season he was averaging like 15 and 8 with a couple huge games thrown in their. Of course I would like him to up that to about 18 and 10 before I'm truly satisfied but in my mind he's got more than a season to do it... He's still only 21 for heavens sake...

Hawes missed the first day of mini camp last year I believe. I could be wrong on that but i think it was due to a scheduling conflict with the summer classes he was taking. He also refused to run the conditioning test during camp last year until he was pressured into it. A case could be made for Hawes being a bit of a slacker when it comes to offseason and preseason work.

I don't see this as a big deal, or any of it really. Although he should of cleared this ahead of time. No excuse for springing this on everyone at the last minute.
