Bonzi the Bobcat? (MERGED)

Charlotte Observer - Is Bonzi Wells in the Charlotte Bobcats ' future?

Bobcats coach-general manager Bernie Bickerstaff confirmed Tuesday he plans discussions with Wells' representatives sometime this week to gauge the free-agent swingman's interest in signing with the team, Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer is reporting.

Wells averaged 13.6 points and 7.7 rebounds last season for the Sacramento Kings . He's also been linked to the Houston Rockets , Denver Nuggets and Miami Heat .

Since scoring at the wing positions is a clear need for the Bobcats, Wells' skill set would be a good fit. Also, the Bobcats are several million under the salary cap, so they could seemingly make a competitive offer.

The greater question is a roster spot. The Bobcats already have 15 players under contract, plus a qualifying offer of about $3 million to restricted free agent Melvin Ely. Bickerstaff indicated that resolving Ely's situation probably takes precedence over any other move between now and the start of training camp Tuesday in Wilmington.

sorry, but i really hope this does not happen. cp3, peja, chandler, bobby and bonzi all on the same team could mean trouble. i would much rather wells go to an eastern team and not make things so hard on us if possible...

youre mistaken the Bobcats with the Hornets. hehe:p

This would be the classic negotiating stooge team with caproom. Nobody really wants to go there, but they all hold it out as a threat to try to get more money out of other teams. Certainly with the possibility now of actually getting something of value out of the Rockets, I hope that's how it works out here.

Bonzi a Bobcat???

In the paper today saying the Bobcats were interested in talking with Bonzi...this is GREAT news for us. Bobcats can TRUMP any offer by any other team. It makes sense too. Bonzi is looking for a 1 year deal, bobcats need to get to the min. cap threshold. A DREAMY one year rental for them.

NOW if we could figure out a sign and trade that would land us Melvin Ely...I would be in heaven.

Maybe we could move Potapenko to Minny(who needs a big man...)?

Final roster:
C: Brad Miller, Melvin Ely, Loren Woods
PF: Kenny Thomas, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Louis Amundson
SF: Ron Artest, Francisco Garcia, Corliss Williamson
SG: Kevin Martin, John Salmons, Quincy Douby
PG: Mike Bibby, Jason Hart, Ronnie Price

Now that roster me likes.

Um... why is is this good news for the Kings? Losing Bonzi for nothing.... what part of that is possibly good?

And why in the world would the Bobcats give up Melvin Ely when they can just sign Bonzi outright? They're way under the cap.

I'm going to refrain from speculating on what kind of substances you ingested this morning.

Yeah, given the Rockets emergence as a team possibly willing to give us a first rounder for Bonzi, to have him sign away to somebody else for nothing is actually pretty sucky news.

What are you smokin Smills? :D The Bobcats will sign Bonzi outright, they don't need to give us anything back.

Okay, I'm really confused (some would say that's not unusual!). When we pulled our multi-year offer to Bonzi off the table did we renounce our Bird rights to him as well? If so, then I understand all of the pessimism about retaining him, especially with Petrie's public comments. But if we didn't then aren't we still at stage one, trying to establish a legitimate market value for him and then deciding if we wish to exercise our Bird rights and match/exceed any offer he's received? Doesn't any deal for Bonzi still have to go through the Kings? It's not so much that I'm fixated on retaining him, I just want us to receive as much value in some form or another as possible if he leaves.

The Kings have his Bird rights, but that means absolutely nothing unless we have the money to spend on him without going into luxury tax hell. We don't. We spent the available money, primarily on John Salmons.

ANY team can talk to Bonzi and make a deal. If the team is under the salary cap or if Bonzi is willing to accept whatever exception they may have, they can simply sign him for whatever they want with no problems. The only time Bird rights would come into effect would be if the team was going to do a sign-and-trade with us. We could do the deal, but any salaries we received back would be subject to inclusion for luxury tax calculations.

At this point, the possibility of that happening are slim to none.

I'd rather see him go to Charlotte than Houston. Houston could knock us out of the playoffs with him, Charlotte isn't even in the same conference.

that has alot of capspace ... that can sign him outright... that would leave us with empty pockets... that would really suck...

Bonzi is GONE. His salary is already off the books of the Kings, and has been replaced - at least in part - by the salary of John Salmons. His locker has been cleared out, the name on his parking spot has been removed. Bonzi Wells is no longer a Sacramento King, nor do we retain any kind of propriety interest in him. His Bird rights ONLY have value if we're going to do something with him, which it certainly appears we are not.

So Bonzi is going to take a pay cut to play for a guaranteed non-contender?

Poor Bonzi, he can't even say he's taking less money to go for a ring. ;)

i'm the opposite, i'd rather him go to houston IF we can get a pick or some cash or some exception out of it. houston can knock us out of the playoffs or beat us to the 8th spot; next year isn't as important as the future to me.

Exactly -- go ahead and knock us from the #8 spot and a first round whooping -- when you think about it the ONLY way Houston can knock us out of the playoff picture is if we are in fact that #8 seed. Which is kinda a sad seed to have and almost guaranteed first round doom. SO if they knock us from #8 to #9, that's fine by me. Gives us an outside outside shot at the Oden sweepstakes AND Houton's pick.

No, we could still resign him to more than any other team, we just are choosing not to do so since he demanded so much $$$ and we went to plan "B" (signing Salmons as a backup) instead.

Bonzi can sign with anyone he wants to. He is not a restricted free agent.

And an upset Artest.

^ if artest's happiness is hinging on how we fare next season, that would be ridiculous. we're in a transition phase with a new coach and a bunch of youngsters.

i hope bonzi goes anywhere in the east, i think if tmac stays healthy and the rockets get bonzi they can go to the western confrence finals

i don't want bonzi back. we're beyond stacked at the 1,2,3 positions. this was in response to the guy who wanted charlotte to sign him. i'd rather try to work out a deal w/ houston to get the exception and draft pick for bonzi where as if he went to charlotte, we'd get squat.

Charlotte Observer

Charlotte Bobcats coach-general manager Bernie Bickerstaff liked what he heard Thursday from free agent Bonzi Wells.

However, the Bobcats haven't made a contract offer to Wells, a guard-forward, and probably wouldn't until Melvin Ely's status is resolved.

"Our issue first is to work things out for Mel," said Bickerstaff, who's looking into sign-and-trade options for Ely, a restricted free agent. In the alternative, Ely could sign a one-season qualifying offer of about $3 million to stay with the Bobcats."

This morning Joe Maloof was on CSN and ran down the whole Bonzi situation and what really went down. He said they offered him 38,5 million dollars over 5 years and told his agent that they had to start moving on soon and for him to get back to them. Apparently the agent never got back in contact so they moved on to John.

The decision 30 year old Bonzi will likely face is weather or not to sign for one year at min salery and test the watters as a 31 year old next season or take a fairly cheap 3 year deal with Houston or some other team that can pull off a sign and trade... price tag on a deal like this islikely to be about 2 mill a year. It's a tough call and in the end who knows what he will do he is after all Bonzi Wells.

As I said before I would love to see the Kings get something for him but at this stage it has to be considered found money. Bonzi is GONE, more than likely he will take some blue light special contract. Time to move on.

Did they say anything about a possible S&T with someone like Houston or anything else?
