So you wanted a guy who is super thin, shorter, had about 5 fewer points and rebounds per game, had 2.4 TO per assist (vs. about 1:1 for JT), and blocks fewer shots per game?

One was a frosh, the other a senior. For comparison Thompson as a frosh, at little Rider, averaged 9.1pts 7.3reb and 0.9blk.

That would be the argument for Randolph -- upside, and maybe, just maybe, a star. Thompson, both good and bad, is more solid, more developed. Its good in that we finally got a true PF type player. Not a tweener, but a solid full sized meat and potatoes PF. Its bad in that in classic Petrie fashion he took the finished product with little chance of developing into a special player over the wild card who might be magic. Geoff is the accountant of GMs, wants everything to be on the table before him, and if he's forced to take a rookie would like him to be as unrookielike as possible.

It's funny, the one time he went with raw potential and inexperience was Gerald Wallace, which was actually a pretty good pick, but based on comments he's made I think he regrets it. He let Tony Parker and Gilbert Arenas go that draft, and I wonder if it's soured him on taking the potential guys. Ever since then he's been drafting guys with at least three years of college.

Either he thinks there's more value with college guys or he doesn't think raw potential is worth it. I can kind of see the latter point since Wallace had to leave to turn into anything, as often happens with those types of players. So maybe he would rather take guys who may not have the highest ceiling but have a better chance of contributing before their rookie contract is up.

Blazers just packaged Arthur and Dorsey for Batum... This team is going to be a powerhouse for years. I think Petrie might have visited his old office and left his mojo there or something Portland's GM is runing circles around the league.

This might be stupid but after thinking about it again, maybe Portland would do the trade. Does anybody think that the Blazers would be interested in John (besides the fact that John is a little older than the other guys)?

I've gotten the same feeling -- that he basically learned all the wrong lessons from that. As far as value for position, Gerald is right there with Kevin for the best pick Geoff has ever made. But his quotes seem to indicate that he's not going to look at it that way.

Portland's potential starting lineup for the next decade

PG- J. Bayless 19 yrs old
SG- B. Roy 23 yrs old
SF- M. Webster 21 yrs old
PF- L. Aldridge 22 yrs old
C- Greg Oden 20 yrs old

Some say Bayless may not be a true point, but this works because of Roy. Roy can handle the ball just as good as a PG.

Wow. If Oden is good at all the will be scary good.

Blazers signed Rudy Fernandez for next year. He is a very good player, I'm curious how his game will translate in the NBA.
