Kings rev it up in Indianapolis
40-point 3rd quarter sparks win

INDIANAPOLIS-They came ready with the signs, including one that read "Backstabber" and so many others that were intended for their prodigal son.

But by the time it was over at Conseco Fieldhouse on Sunday night, Ron Artest was nowhere to be found and the Indiana fans had discovered a new target for their own ire: their Pacers.

Meanwhile, the Kings showed plenty of encouraging signs in a 110-93 win that seemed to lift the locker room to a level it's rarely reached this season. Kings center Brad Miller had received his wish, beating his hometown team in what served as bragging rights at least until a rematch in Sacramento next week. Mike Bibby and Kevin Martin bounced back from their benching and combined five points on Friday night at New Jersey to provide a one-two punch to the tune of 63 points.

The Kings avoided falling to 0-3 on this trip that concludes tonight in Philadelphia. But perhaps most of all, Kings coach Eric Musselman relished in the reality that his team won a game with the exact style he has always envisioned.

The combination of a full-court press and the scorching play of Bibby and Martin in the third quarter resulted in 40 Kings points and an 87-74 lead Sacramento didn't relinquish.

The Kings finished with 12 steals, including a team-high three from Martin.

"Deflections and steals got us easy scoring opportunities in the third quarter, and this was probably our best defensive game of the year," Musselman said. "It was a big win against a team that's going to make the Eastern Conference playoffs and against a team that's a solid team at home, a team that's over .500. We're in the middle of a long East Coast trip. It was very important."

Artest missed the game for family reasons, and was excused by the team. He made the trip to Indianapolis on Friday night, but returned to New York City on Sunday morning and is expected to play tonight in Philadelphia.

Artest said by e-mail that he enjoyed watching the game far more than his old fans.

"(The) guys played outstanding," he wrote. "(I'm) looking forward to tomorrow."

It was, by all means, a collective effort. Off the bench, swingman Francisco García not only agitated on both ends but had 10 points while point guard Ronnie Price again asserted himself with strong defense and Shareef Abdur-Rahim neared a double double (10 points, eight rebounds).

But Martin and Bibby were the ones making the Pacers pay on the offensive end. From late in the second half until late in the third quarter, they scored 35 consecutive points for the Kings. Martin, who has often been frustrated this season when slow starts lead to less minutes, started 0 of 7 from the field and found other ways to score while avoiding the bench. He scored 21 of his 35 points in the third quarter, with 18 points coming from 23 free-throw attempts as he repeatedly drove to the basket.

"I got a chance to work through it (Sunday night), and I didn't shoot the ball well, but I just stayed with it," Martin said.

Miller said it was key for Martin to persevere through his struggles, as he was just 8 of 23 from the field.

Interestingly, Martin's top-three scoring games of the season have come when Artest was out.

"He's learning you have to stick with it and keep going," Miller said. "You're not going to make a lot of your shots. Mr. 50 percent this year thinks he's the top dog, but he's going to have nights where he doesn't shoot that well."

Bibby kept the Kings going early, scoring 11 of his 28 points in the first quarter as the Kings trailed 27-24. He finished 10 for 17 from the field while the Kings had 25 assists.

"Our ballclub moved the ball (Sunday night)," Musselman said. "There were a lot of possessions where we were shooting the ball under six seconds because we were so unselfish. We were proud of the way the basketball moved (Sunday night)."

I hope Musselman reads that ... and understands it. I'm tired of seeing Martin benched when he misses a couple of shots or gets two fouls. The kid isn't being allowed to learn and grow...

I think his defense has something to do with his benching. I have noticed Martin has been playing very lazy defense as of late. IMO

While he also gets benched for defense, I have seen many times where the instant he gets a second foul he's gone... You don't improve a player's skills by benching them. You improve their skills by challenging them to do better. This isn't gonna be a championship year. This is the PERFECT time for a coach to work with his players in game situations and help them hone their skills. Unfortunately, I don't think we have the kind of coach who can or will do that.

the kings can still hit 50 wins. if they manage to go 26-0 the rest of the season. that's not gonna happen. but we do need to finish these final games above .500 if we wana have a shot at making the playoffs. now is the time to start shortening the rotation. starting 5 along with s.a.r, corliss, and salmons.

And just why do you want this team to go to the playoffs? We aren't good. Period. End of discussion. Right now the ONE best thng we can salvage from this season is an opportunity to help improve our young players. That's the ONLY realistic goal.

i want sacramento to get into the playoffs because i hate seeing them lose. even if its a first round exit we can still they say made it into the playoffs. i dont have a problem developing younger players if we have someone thats a already a star and we can build around them. when we have nothing it makes no sense to continue to play these rookies. it could take years for them to turn into solid role players at best. i dont see any potential kobes. except for martin. but he's been here 3 years.

Not this again. Can you beat that drum anymore? Do we really need to go this negative direction day after day? Can someone cheer for their team to do well without being put down for it?

VF21 probably wants good draft position. but the kings are bad. but not bad enough to get a good pick. dont know how loaded the draft is yet. we'll see. i would prefer trades for an all-star. not relying on the draft and developing these "younger players" who may not even be as good as bobby jackson once was for this team

And what good would that do? Impress a bunch of people who don't know anything about basketball? Clearly, anyone who follows the NBA isn't going to be impressed. They've been watching this team and know as well as we do that they aren't very good.

It makes no sense to develop rookies? Hey, good approach. Under your leadership, Kevin Martin would be out of the league and washing dishes somewhere.

I like to see the Kings win, too, but I'm not going to be real happy if they manage to limp into the playoffs and are flushed out in the first round, especially if it means shortening our rotations and NOT giving the youngsters a decent chance to play.

well call it what you will. i had the same feeling about martin when he first got into the league. but it took him 2 years to become the player he is. he started showing flashes after he replaced bonzi last year as a starter when wells got hurt. salmons is garbage. a pure product of the waste system. hasnt cisco been here 2 years already? and price?

I remembered specifically your opinion of Martin when he came into the league. You said that he would never be a major rotation player and look where he is now. Martin didnt exactly get better by sitting on the bench and watching the vets played. He got better through more playing time. How exactly do you know if Cisco and Price can play if you dont play them? It's not about how long in the league you have been in; it's about how much playing time you get to improve your game.

And you were wrong then, too... Martin has always had the talent. It was a matter of him developing it and the ONLY way that happens is through playing time.

salmons is garbage. a pure product of the waste system.

That's simply not even worth responding to...

hasnt cisco been here 2 years already? and price?

And what's your point? With playing time they'll continue to improve. Cisco was handicapped last year after that freak twist of fate when he was just trying to knock a ball down and came down wrong on his ankle.

The FUTURE of any team is with its youth. If we do not take the time now to develop them, when we're clearing not going to be making any kind of impact after April 19, then this team is going to continue to wallow in mediocrity.

I commend Muss for yanking Martin out of games. He's not yanking him because he's not shooting well. He's benching him because he's 1) not playing D like he should, 2) not rebounding like he should, 3) not going to the basket like he should, or all or some of the above. Sometimes I'd like for Muss to give him a little more rope myself, but then I don't know what the communication is before the game between Muss and Martin. If Muss has shown him repeatedly what he wants and Martin doesn't do it in the first 7 minutes or so for whatever reason, probably because he's tired, then bench him. You're not doing Martin a favor by playing him despite his poor play. If anything, you're just encouraging him through positive reinforcement to continue with the bad habits, which for Martin is typically playing passively. This is the part of the season that's a grind for young players getting lots of minutes. I don't think Muss is interested in deferring to Martin's fatigue. He wants him to push through it. If not, he'll get somebody fresher in there.

That's extremely unlikely to happen.

so you're saying if we gave up artest, miller, and thomas we couldnt get an all-star big man with a solid role player in return?

No, since you are the one who constantly says that Miller and Thomas are worthless, right?

Who will trade an all-star big man for Artest?

so you're saying if we gave up artest, miller, and thomas we couldnt get an all-star big man with a solid role player in return?
Not impossible, but not very likely. Why would the other team give up an all-star big man for that?

so you're saying if we gave up artest, miller, and thomas we couldnt get an all-star big man with a solid role player in return?

wait, wait...whaaaaa???? someone would give up an amare, dwight howard, or bosh for artest, miller, and thomas?!?!

geoff, get on the phone!!!!!!!
