Kings Notes: Fit official won't blow whistle on racing Barkley

He's used to avoiding the spits of venom, so this was a nice change of pace in that sense.

Official Dick Bavetta, forever remembered by so many Kings fans for his role in the controversial Game Six of the 2002 Western Conference finals, found a supporter in the front at Arco Arena on Saturday night.

"I'm betting on you, Dick," said David Carlson, 53, of Jackson.

"Thank you, sir," Bavetta said. "I think that's a wise decision."

The game at hand was not the Kings-Nuggets affair, but the much talked-about footrace between Bavetta and Charles Barkley. The Hall of Famer and TNT analyst has been taking good-natured shots at the 67-year-old Bavetta on the air recently and challenged him to a sprint between the younger, rotund one and the older, but fit, referee.

Among his zingers, Barkley said Bavetta had "parted the Red Sea with Moses" and that his gravestone would read, "He keeled over while racing 'the Chuckster.' "

When Carlson contended that Barkley might weigh twice as much as the wispy Bavetta, Bavetta said: "Try three times. I'm only 160 pounds."

As for whether the race actually will take place, Bavetta wasn't sure. "I don't even know if this thing is going to happen," he said just before tipoff. "I haven't changed anything. I do my eight miles every day whether there's a race or not."

If the race is on, Bavetta has one stipulation.

"I want something with turns in it, not a straightaway (but) back and forth," he said. "The longer it is, the better it is for me."

Circus shot -- Allen Iverson wasn't in town to provide the theatrics, so Ron Artest did his best to make up for it. Midway through the third quarter, Artest dribbled behind his back to get by a defender in the paint, then threw up a left-handed layup softball-style from his hip. It fell in for a 59-49 lead, and Artest couldn't help but smile.

Iverson, the Nuggets star, missed the trip with a sprained ankle and the flu.

Run of success -- There were oddities all over the place the last time the Nuggets beat the Kings at Arco Arena.

Before the streak ran to 20 consecutive Kings wins after Saturday's victory, the last Denver win came on Jan. 7, 1997. Garry St. Jean coached the Kings then, and former Kings coach Dick Motta coached the Nuggets.

Current Kings forward Corliss Williamson came off the bench for Sacramento, and former Kings big man LaSalle Thompson was a Nuggets reserve.

The Kings' starters were Mitch Richmond, Olden Polynice, Tyus Edney, Billy Owens and Michael Smith.

I loved the animal!!!
Totally! I just wish he hadnt gotten hurt, his career would have been more fruitful. He was definetely a steal in the 2nd round for Petrie. Drafting Grant in the first round and Michael Smith in the 2nd was definetely, I'd say, Petrie's 2nd or 3rd best offseason with the Kings.

We loyal Kings fans have been placed firmly on the horns of a spectacular dilemma. There were more Dick Bavetta voodoo dolls made in Sacramento after the now infamous "Game 6" than cheeseburgers manufactured at Whitey's . Yet, how can any Kings fan not support Dick Bavetta in the recently proposed "Race of the Century"?

I will be rooting for Mr. Bavetta, and not just because I am older than the dirt under ARCO Arena. Who among us would root for the "Round Mound of Sound", the dysenterious "Mouth From the South", the "Harlequin of Hoops", yes indeed, Charles "Bacon Breath" Barkley.

My money is on Bavetta. He is a runner and athletic. Barkley is not the young stud that he apparently envisions himself. He is at least 50 pounds over-fat, and no longer athletic. He better take and aspirin before this stunt.

Nah, thats an easy one, since I actually like Chuck Barkley, and he's a great guy...and I dont have any Bavetta voodoo dolls, either.:D I only had a problem with 1 of the fouls in that now infamous game 6...the one where Bibby's nose fouled Kobe's elbow...and flagerantly, no less. Oh well, thats in the past. Go Chuck! LOL

Bavetta himself said, "I want something with turns in it, not a straightaway (but) back and forth," he said. "The longer it is, the better it is for me."

Charles is worried about Bavetta keeling over? He must be kidding. With Bavetta running 8 miles each day, Barkley won't have anywhere near enough stamina.

My money is on Bavetta.

I like Chuck, big mouth and all. I'll be rooting for him if this happens.

Same.

Kinda OT but lately the Chuckster's comments about our team have been the truth(well lately, some of them). He keeps saying "when are they going to blow that team up, they need to rebuild." Well we do.

Don't see how anyone could root for Bavetta ever.

Like a presidential election, this is a no-win situation, all you can do is to pick the lesser evil.

For me, that's Barkley. I know he's out of shape, and if he got ahead I'm sure that Bavetta would T him up and eject him.

Just the same, I gotta do what I gotta do.

There's no way I could pick anyone but Bavetta for one simple reason: The fun the TNT guys will have showing the tape about a gazillion times will be even better than the one where Barkley had to kick the donkey's posterior.

:p

You guys gotta be kidding! You would root for an arrogant, loud-mouthed, millionaire-athlete over the 67-year-old guy that runs everyday for pride and physical conditioning. This is a classic American "underdog" story.

First, Charles won't do it. he has far too much to lose. His life, fortune, and fame has been based on physical prowess, and his lifestyle in retirement has taken that away. Reminds me of my brother. He is not about to show everyone the truth. Bavetta is 67 and white. Case closed.

"ole Bama" quietly declines the offer.

I picked Chuck....He's annoying, but at least he isnt a crooked *** ref on the take.

And you know that last part how exactly?

I know it's considered modern by some people who post on message boards to make outrageous claims about officials, but yours is just totally over the line IMHO. Let's keep this about the topic at hand, okay?

What does that have to do with anything?

Anyway, I don't see how anyone could pick Bavetta ever. The man cost us a championship. Chuck's words of wisdom aren't always nice(or wise) but atleast he's funny. I'll never forgive Bavetta for what he did to cost us a championship. Not ever.

Oh lord. Bavetta did NOT cost us the championship. We went to game 7 O/T and choked BIG TIME. Regardless of what may or may not have happened prior to that, the fate of the Kings was on their own shoulders.

As far as quickdog's comments having relevance go, they're entirely appropriate. He's pointing out that the race won't take place because Barkley won't risk losing to someone who is both much older than he and white. The humiliation qd believes Barkley would experience is why he thinks the race won't ever take place. And it's a valid possibility IMHO.

In my eyes Chuck would be the underdog based on his weight and conditioning. And while I don't really care for Bavetta, I don't have the venom that most on this forum have for the guy. Everyone knows Chuck will lose this race so how can you call Bavetta an underdog?

The public Chuck is more than a little annoying and says some stupid things at times but everything I've heard about the guy when you get down to the 1 on 1 level is that he's a real class guy.

Ah, but there's the rub. ;)

The person "running" the race would be the public Chuck, not the private individual.

In a sprint, Chuck wins. In a long distance race, Dickie does it.

I disagree. Charles is older than when he was in basketball shape, he's fatter than before and his job is sitting on his fatter, older *** and exercising his mouth. (which was a really dumb idea in the first place but TNT was desperate) Dick has been officiating for quite some time now and is in great shape for his age. So IMO, no question, Dick wins.

Barkley was on Jay Leno last night, talking about the upcoming race. He doesn't really believe that Bavetta might beat him. He's not preparing, he's just clinging to Bavetta's age as a way of convincing himself he'll win...

I think Barkley is gonna be in for a big surprise...
