In a week full of coaching hirings and firings, the Kings' search appears to have slowed for the time being.
Geoff Petrie has conducted seven interviews that concluded Wednesday, and the Kings' basketball president is expected to contact some candidates by phone over the weekend for follow-up talks. Additional interviews could take place at a pre-draft camp in Orlando, Fla., Tuesday through June 4.
Waiting for the postseason to end -- and, specifically, for Detroit's season to end -- appears to be a priority for the Kings. Pistons assistant Terry Porter is believed to be a strong candidate, even though his team still could be playing in the NBA Finals as late as June 20 and Petrie has said he won't conduct interviews with assistants whose teams are in the playoffs until their season is over.
A Kings assistant during the 2002-03 season, Porter was a head coach for two seasons with Milwaukee. He took the Bucks to the playoffs as the eighth seed during the 2003-04 campaign but went just 30-52 the following year when point guard T.J. Ford was injured for the season.
Porter was part of the Portland team that went to the NBA Finals twice (1990, '92) when Petrie was the Blazers' senior vice president of basketball operations. Porter was a two-time All-Star point guard who played for 17 seasons, with his teams missing the playoffs just once.
Phoenix assistant Marc Iavaroni is no longer expected to receive an interview, but former Miami Heat coach Stan Van Gundy said Friday from his Miami-area home that he remains very interested in the Kings' position and that he and Petrie are "still talking."
Van Gundy, who already has interviewed with Petrie and turned down an offer this week from Indiana, also has expressed interest in the newly vacant Orlando job.
