Kings hire Theus' first two assistants
Bee Staff Reports -
Published 6:15 pm PDT Wednesday, August 1, 2007

The Kings announced today they have hired former NBA players Chuck Person and Randy Brown as assistant coaches.

Both are the first assistants hired for new coach Reggie Theus.

Person had his best days in the NBA as a sharp-shooting swingman for the Indiana Pacers. After being selected with the fourth overall pick of the 1986 draft, Person averaged 18.8 points per game en route to winning the Rookie of the Year award. After his 14-year career, in which he played for the Pacers, Timberwolves, Spurs, Hornets and SuperSonics, Person moved to a coaching career. He has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach with the Pacers.

Brown, a 12-year NBA veteran, worked the past two seasons on Theus' staff at New Mexico State University. Kings fans already know well of Brown, who played was selected in the second round by Sacramento in the 1991 draft. After four seasons with the Kings, Brown signed a free-agent contract with Chicago -- his hometown -- and won three world championships with the Bulls.

The Bee corrected the article. It no longer says Randy Brown won All-NBA Rookie of the Year.

:p

Reggie Theus and Chuck Person on the same coaching staff -- our shot selection this year should be...interesting.

Guess this makes Randy the defensive coordinator? Always was one of my favorite old Kings -- after a decade of selfish softies not even manly enough to wear the powder blue, he was one of the only guys who understood the defense/winning nexus. That said, never impressed at all as a leader of men.

I thought they were looking for someone with lot's of experiance coaching in the NBA.

Not sure whatever happend on that front. Have to agree though -- let;s assume that Randy and Chuck are your two young assistants, maybe offense/defense. The third guy just HAS to be the old experienced hand or you end up with Muss's staff Pt II.

The Bee is wrong. Kenny Natt is the first hire for Theus, not these two guys.

So the assistants are:

-Natt
-Hamm
-Person
-Brown

I think there will be one more hire... the veteran guy Theus has been talking about. He's talked to Chris Ford and Bob Weiss. Who else could it be?

I dont think Reggie is done hiring...we've got 4 assistants now, Hamm, Brown, Natt and Rifleman...and I fully expect him to add that 'seasoned' guy last, since he has interviewed quite a few of those type of guys in the last month. Bob Weiss and Chris Ford being a couple...I dont think he'd interview those guys unless he planned on filling that role with one of those 'type' of coaches, like he said.

Wow i know im going to sound like grant napier but the bee is an absolute disgrace, Do they even bother doing their homework before they just release stuff? Kenny Natt was with us the whole summer league...anyway i think Bob weiss will be the guy hired last. Theus has been seen eating lucnh and chatting with him i think, forgot where i read/heard that from though.

Does anybody think our coaching staff has more talent than our team?

Is it typical to have 5 assistants? Maybe I've been sleeping for the last 10 years, but I don't ever recall the Kings having that many.

Musselman had five last season: Brooks, Dunn, Hamm, O'Connor and Hughes.

Napear is a disgrace himself. He's a mouthpiece for the Kings organization, masquerading as an unbiased sports-talk radio show host. Disgraceful, indeed.

While I agree that Napear is a disgrace, I think part of it is because he's trying to serve two different masters and failing at both.

Yesterday, Napear had Theus on his show for about 5 minutes. Most of the time, instead of getting right into Kings-related stuff, Grant pimped his golf tournament (Reggie is playing). After most of the time was taken up by bad golf jokes, Reggie says he's visiting each player this summer to see where their heads are as it pertains to Kings basketball. He had time to say one interesting thing: If they don't play hard and within the system, they won't be playing at all. I liked that!

LOL that means 0 pt for Kenny.

It wasn't like Theus was coming on to talk about the Kings and Grant decided to just talk about his golf tourny instead.

It was said before Theus even came on that he was coming on to talk about and promote the golf tournament since he was participating in it. They were auctioning Reggie that day to the highest bidder.
