First, Bonzi Wells nicked his hand, grimacing more out of annoyance than anything. Then it was the ankle giving way, proving that his switch from high tops to low tops wasn't such a good idea. By the time Bonzi Wells had finished against Portland on Saturday night, he needed a handful of Advil to ease the pain. The Kings shooting guard - who received a rest against Phoenix as Kevin Martin started - insists he's no more worn down than normal for this time of year.
"If you have any type of injury, or anything small, you've got to get on top of it," Wells said. "You just get nicks and bruises. That's all that is. You have to stay on top of that stuff so that later on down the line, it's not a problem."
Coach Rick Adelman said his decision to start Martin was more about seeing Martin than it was resting Wells.
King me
The Suns have all sorts of depth thanks to former Kings. Guard Jim Jackson is back for a season that should have less drama than his last. He never reported to New Orleans after being traded there from Houston, biding his time in his native Toledo, Ohio, before forcing a trade to the run-and-gun Suns.
Guard Eddie House is a new addition, having proven his worth with the Kings last season.
Center Brian Grant might be the most content of all, considering he is being paid by the Los Angeles Lakers and Suns. Grant was waived by the Lakers via the one-time amnesty clause, retaining his old contract while signing a one-year, $1.67 million deal with Phoenix.
Guard Anthony Lever-Pedroza was with the Kings during summer league in July. He is the son of former NBA guard Lafayette "Fat" Lever.
On the mend
As expected, backup point guard Jason Hart (hip pointer) didn't play for the second straight game. He did spend nearly an hour riding an exercise bike before the game. Hart hopes to practice Tuesday and possibly play Wednesday against Phoenix.
Key dates
Wednesday: Vs. Phoenix in Albuquerque, N.M. - The Suns and Kings continue on Obscure City Tour 2005. Friday: Vs. Lakers in Las Vegas - Phil Jackson faces the team he was so close to coaching (wink, wink).
Oct. 31: Official cut day before the regular season begins.
Nov. 1: At New Orleans/Oklahoma City in Oklahoma City - Regular season finally arrives under national spotlight.
