The Kings began the interviewing process for a new coach Wednesday when Memphis assistant and former Golden State Warriors head coach Eric Musselman met with co-owners Joe and Gavin Maloof and president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie, The Bee has learned.

Musselman, who was 75-89 with the Warriors from 2002 to 2004 before being fired, will be followed by Mario Elie, with both candidates staying at the Maloof family's Palms Casino Hotel in Las Vegas. Elie, a current Warriors assistant coach, is due in today to meet with the Maloofs and Petrie.

According to Gavin Maloof -- who did not disclose the names of the candidates -- these are the only scheduled interviews as yet.

The Maloof family is unfamiliar with Musselman and Elie, meaning the interviews were and will be as much a getting-to-know-you session as a chalk talk.

The Maloofs chose Las Vegas over Sacramento for the family's convenience. George Maloof, who is the Palms' president, will drop in to chat with the candidates, as will the youngest Maloof brother, Phil, and mother, Colleen. Petrie and Joe Maloof did not return calls for comment.

"I think we'll be talking coaching philosophy, how he sees our team moving forward, what his opinion is, and then maybe some X's and O's that I probably won't understand," Gavin Maloof said. "As owners or business people, we always pick the right people.

That's one thing we've done our entire lives. We have a background in picking the right people. So the person that we'll find will be the right person."

San Antonio assistant P.J. Carlesimo would be interviewed, according to a source close to team officials. But Carlesimo, whose Spurs season ended Monday, does not appear to be a leading candidate.

If that title belongs to anyone, it still appears to be Monarchs coach John Whisenant.

Gavin Maloof said he would have no reservations hiring a coach such as Whisenant, who won last season's WNBA title with the Monarchs but has no NBA experience.

"We don't care (about perceptions)," Gavin Maloof said. "We have to make our own decision. We can't be concerned with what other people around the league are thinking about.

"Remember one thing: we're on an island. They all want us to lose. They don't want us to win. And the media's the media. We can't listen to the media.

(Whisenant) wins. He knows how to win. I don't care if it's (coaching) boys, girls, men, ladies, it doesn't matter. He knows how to win."

The Maloofs' family ties with Whisenant go back more than 30 years, but Gavin Maloof said an interview with Whisenant, the Maloofs, and Petrie present would be necessary nonetheless.

Elie, who was a small forward for 11 seasons in the NBA, won three championships as a player -- two with Houston (1994 and 1995) and one with San Antonio (1999). He also served as an assistant coach with the Spurs during the 2003-04 season. Until Elie headed for Golden State in 2004 as part of head coach Mike Montgomery's staff, he had made the playoffs in all 12 seasons as a player and coach.

Musselman was an assistant in Atlanta from 1996 to 1998 and Orlando from 1998 to 2000. In seven seasons as head coach of the CBA's Florida Beach Dogs, Musselman was 270-122 (.688), marking the second-highest winning percentage in league history behind Denver head coach George Karl, who coached for five seasons in the CBA.

Gavin Maloof said Saturday the list of candidates was "less than 10," and numerous candidates have been eliminated publicly. Among them are Larry Brown, the New York Knicks coach who reportedly is on the verge of being fired; former Miami coach Stan Van Gundy, who reportedly has no interest in the Kings position; and former coach Don Nelson. Former Kings assistant Elston Turner, who lives with his family in Roseville, has not been contacted about the job.

Well its nice to see that their's progress. The 3 coaches that I think should be seriously considered are Elie, Musselman, and P.J.

Well we know that Van Gundy is out. With Musselman, Elie, Carlesimo, and Whisenant as interviewers, that doesn't leave a whole lot of other people if the list is less than 10. I think right now it sounds like the ranking of the guys from the Organizations prospective that we know are on the list are:

1.Whisenant
2. Elie
3. Musselman
4. Carlesimo

Coach Whis is a great coach, I just think they would take another huge hit from the media and even the monarchs players if they stole their coach away as their season was really getting rolling. What kind of message does that send?? That the Kings success is more important than the Monarchs success?? That the Monarchs are really do play 2nd fiddle to the Kings in the Maloofs eyes?? I mean I think we all know that's pretty much true, but to boldly make that statement with your actions is another thing.

I guess the assistant coach of the Monarchs would probably step up and take the reigns for the rest of the season. Unless of course Coach Whis wants to bring his entire Monarchs coaching staff with him, which I could see happening. I mean why not? He has faith in those guys. So, you'd have to have a replacement ready almost immediately to step in as the Monatchs next coach.

Unless you have him deal with his Kings duties as well as coach the rest of the season with the Monarchs?? Letting Geoff oversee some things over the summer that the coach may normally do, due to Whis's not being around at times?? That all just seems WAAAAY complicated to me. I hope Elie gets it.

Um, yes????

To even compare the two is nonsense.

If you noticed I stated also, that we all know it's true, but to just come out and say it?? That's a whole different story.

All I know is that the last family friend hired by the boys "who always choose the right person" was Rupe the bleeping Hoop. How about we stick to the candidates who's qualifications don't include Maloof family lackey, and let Coach Whis continue to do what he does well. Time to check those egos boys.

Maybe to you.

The fans of reigning CHAMPION Sacramento Monarchs might feel differently.

I'll go on record right now as predicting that IF the Maloofs pick Coach Whis to lead the Kings, they're going to have to make sure they don't alienate a good-sized Monarchs fan base that is every bit as rabid about their team as we are about the Kings.

Those fans spend money, too.

Having said that, I don't want Coach Whis for the Kings but not because he's from the WNBA. I don't want him because he's doing a danged good job right where he is and I don't see why the champions should be dealt a blow like this at the beginning of their season so the Maloofs can put a "good old boy" into the head slot of the Kings. There are at least two better candidates in Vegas right now waiting to interview with the Maloofs. And that's just today...

This attitude by some NBA fans about the WNBA is out-dated and pretty boorish.

I think the last big candidate is the assistant for Phoenix, Iavaroni(?). I hope they keep saying that Coach Whis is the leading candidate for propriety's sake, because I think it would be pretty silly to hire him. Just like it would be silly to hire Pat Summit, or that dude from UConn. It's a totally different game.

Well I just spoke to a co-worker of mine that also works at Arco and is a Kings and Monarchs fan. She said that Whis already made a public statement saying no matter what happens he is obligated to the Monarchs for 1 more season, meaning this season. So, if he was picked for the Kings head coach he would still coach the monarchs for the remainder of this season.

this kinda **** scares me. even the maloofs must recognize the differences between the wnba and the nba. considering the competition on the short list (and it is a very short list as far as talent and experience is concerned), how can the maloofs even consider hiring a guy with zero nba experience? whisenant didn't play in the nba and hasn't coached in the nba on any level. i understand the maloofs will do a fair bit of posturing in the media, but i feel like their sincere about considering whisenant as the kings next head coach, when young guys with fire and at least some nba coaching experience are also available and willing to take the reigns. i must admit, i do not watch monarchs basketball, but i do believe the hype. whisenant's good, they say. i'll buy that, easily...however, to give him such a huge vote of confidence by turning over the kings head coaching position to him is, in a word, ludicrous, considering the other available options, and it goes beyond upstaging geoff petrie when it comes to personnel.

And that would hurt BOTH teams. He wouldn't be available for full-time concentration with the Monarchs and he wouldn't be able to focus on the draft, possible player acquisitions, etc.

There's an old saying: A man cannot serve two masters. In this case, although the Maloofs may own both an NBA franchise and a WNBA franchise, they are totally separate and distinct entities. One or the other OR both would suffer IMHO.

I definitely see what your saying, and think it could turn into a mess at least for this offseason. Although if the Organization was to move that way, I'm sure Geoff, The Maloofs and Whis would have a plan for that. Possible acquisitions, trades, and the draft could really be handled by the teams scouts and Geoff Petrie. They could discuss with Whis what exactly he wants, what he would like to see improved, what kind of players. And, the Maloofs and Geoff already have an idea of where they want the team to go to begin with, so I would trust putting that in his hands. But, at least for this offseason it would be kind of messy. Bring on Elie.

Whis can do both jobs. There really isn't much to do that Petrie and Co. don't do already, Petrie does the workouts, picks the players, etc. Training camp doesn't begin until October. Picking staff and all that stuff. It must be doable otherwise they wouldn't consider it.
