Nearly one month after the Kings fired Eric Musselman, their search for a new coach is expected to move ahead this week.

The first step forward, however, might already have taken place. Scott Brooks, Musselman's former lead assistant, had lunch with Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie on Friday, according to three sources who didn't want to go on record for fear of repercussions.

The meeting had all the appearances of an informal interview and was the latest sign that Brooks might get a legitimate chance to land the position. Brooks and his agent, Warren LeGarie, declined comment. The Kings, it is believed, have yet to set up formal interviews but are expected to do so this week.

While Petrie has indicated the search will be wide-ranging and without many parameters, Brooks' reputation within the organization and his solid résumé work in his favor. Even before Brooks came to Sacramento, he was considered to be on a short list of NBA assistants with head-coaching potential. He spent nearly two of his three seasons as an assistant in Denver under head coach George Karl, who lauded Brooks in early February for his promise as a coach.

"I think he has a player's background with a coaching passion, and I don't think that happens all the time," Karl said. "I think a lot of times players stay players. His passion right now is to be a great coach and to get an opportunity to be a head coach."

Brooks spent 10 seasons in the NBA as a reserve, playing for six teams and winning a championship with Houston during the 1993-94 season, in which he averaged 5.2 points and 16.7 minutes. He was known as an overachiever early, small at 5-foot-11 but putting up big numbers as a shooter at East Union High School in Manteca, San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, TCU and UC Irvine.

Brooks, however, might not be the only candidate with local ties under consideration.

Another source who did not want to be identified for fear of repercussions said Bill Cartwright, the Elk Grove High product who played 16 seasons in the NBA and is a New Jersey assistant, likely will become part of the search once the Nets are out of the playoffs.

Cartwright, who won three championships in Chicago, was the Bulls' head coach from late in the 2001-02 season until he was fired early in the 2003-04 campaign. Petrie said he will not contact any assistants while their teams are still in the postseason.

Petrie met with Musselman's former coaching staff last week, all seven of whom are under contract for next season. They were told they would be retained until a new coach is hired. At that time, the new coach will decide their fates, although they have been given permission to pursue other opportunities.

I know the win know crowd will hate to hear this, but Brooks might be a wise choice for a building year. Way too many things up in the air right now but IF the Kings can't make several off season moves to upgrade the team for next season, the wise aproach may well be draft as high as they can, trade for picks, expiring contracts and raw tallent and let Brooks get his feet wet while the team positions it's self for next years top 3 loto players and clears cap space to land a Top FA. In short the very things they SHOULD have done last of season.

Yup, but hey, I guess a year late is better than nothing...no better time to start in a positive direction than now.

I would like to see Brooks get a shot as a NBA head coach with the Kings. He seems like a real nice and thoughtful person.

Exactly the point I was going to make. A newbie coach needs a young nucleus to cut his teeth in this game. Seasoned vets don't listen to coaches w/o experience (as we have learned), and experienced coaches (mostly) don't have the patience to teach and grow young players.

I will wager that the new coach will be on the younger side (with regards to experience.)

I agree we should get a coach who is very good at developing young talent, but do we know that Brooks is that guy?

I don't think we'll know if any of the young coaches are "very good at developing young talent," until after the season(s) are done. It will also depend on the assistant coaching staff.

If we do go with Brooks, I would like to see Corliss resigned as the ultimate veteran presence on the squad.

I would love to have Corliss back, no matter who the coach is. Wonder, if he would want to come back though, or would like to try his luck with a legitimate contender.

Hammer, Nail, Head.

Corliss is the one player I like the Kings to resign for that exact reason. However, signing Price, Williams and Corliss under the MLE will be tricky unless there is a loophole I don't know about.

Neither Price nor Williams is likely to sign for more than the minimum, and so far as I know, minimum contracts do not cut into your MLE at all, and you can sign as many people to them as you have empty roster spots without concern for exceptions or salary cap restraints.

As for Corliss, would like to have back as the wise old head in a rebuild, but we've got serious holes to fill, and I would be loathe to chew into our MLE to bring him back. He's kind of a luxury. Think he'll probably get some more attractive bids from contenders anyway. If you get to choose to finish your career competing for titles wiht the Spurs, or rebuilding with us....

We need Price and Williams to learn from Kevin and work and work and work until their game prgresses by leaps and bounds over last season. Williams seemed to have shown that type of work ethic maybe he will build upon his game and his frame.

Ronnie has worked extremely hard from all reports.

Kings history indicates that Corlis is as good as gone. He is my favorite King, therefore he will be traded as soon as they can get it done. It has somehting to do with devine guidance, as interpreted by the Maloof family.

isn't he a free agent now?

Don't we have Big Nasty's Bird Right?!

I was under the impression that we do, and if thats the case, can't we sign re-sign him to any amount without it actually affecting the MLE?

We do have his bird rights and don't have to use the MLE to re-sign him but I think they should just let him go to a contender it would be best for both parties in my opinion, I think Dallas is the perfect fit.

I would not wish this upon Corliss. He wants to play for a contender before his career is over and its just a biiiiit doubtful the Kings will be there any time soon.

Corliss HAS played for not only a contender but a winner. He got his ring with the Pistons. In addition, he received the Sixth Man of the Year award. In interviews last year, Corliss mentioned that he would like to end his career as a King, and that he just wanted to be an active part of a team for the remainder of his career...

I think the key is in offering Corliss the "active part of the team" role as well as having him mentor the kids. He's a true class act and I think the Kings would be much better with him than they would be without him.

I've followed Corliss throughout his career, so I know the ups and downs. I'd love for him to remain a King, but coulda sworn at the end of last season he indicated his desire to finish out on a contender again. And I could not agree more "He's a true class act and I think the Kings would be much better with him than they would be without him." He'd benefit any club.

You know, now that I think about it a bit more, you may be right. I may have blocked that out because it would mean him signing with a different team.

;)

Comments like this from crusty veterans is sooooooo old. Really, you would like to play for a contender? That's funny, every other veteran would like to play for a cellar dwellar. Gimme a break.

As for me, I think Corliss is a great guy (at least he seems to be). However, I hope his roster spot is filled by a younger, more talented prospect. I also hope the Kings can do better than Brooks.
