Australian open

It's tennis time again, the first Grand Slam of the year. Safin, last year's winner, Nadal and Agassi are all out with injuries. Can anyone stop Federer, maybe Roddick. I for one hope so, Roger's dominance of this "rivalry" is getting old. Unfortunately I'll miss the second week because I'll be out of town so I'm hoping the best matches will be in the first week.
Hewitt, the #3 seed would love to win the Slam in his home country and he is scheduled to meet Federer in the semis where he is definitely more vulnerable so he has a chance. Americans Ginepri, Blake and Dent are seeded 13,20 and 27 respectively.
In the ladies, Davenport is seeded #1 and with Clijsters recovering from injuries, she stands a good shot but there's always Sharapova,Henin and the Williams sisters who could pull an upset.
Any predictions, comments? I didn't do too well in my predictions last year but I'm going to say Federer and Clijsters (and hope I'm wrong on the first one).
Good luck to all the Americans.

I don't see Federer as having a rivalry with anybody, he's just a notch above everybody else.

Tennis fans always root for the underdog, the better he plays, the more tennis you get to watch.

The Hewitt / Vic match right now is great! Hope from work today recovering from strep so I get to watch. My heart is still with Roddick for the whole thing.

I agree chelle, Vik's playing very well. I think hewitt's distracted by all the "baby" hoopla going on down under.
BTW I hope you're feeling better.

I wish I could say that Hewitt, Roddick, or Ljubicic will take it, but it just won't happen. Period. Federer will use the Aussie Open as tune-up for his next tournament, probably Rotterdam. 'Nuff said...

As for the ladies, it's a tough one. Clijsters and Davenport seem to be the favourites, but Henin is right there too. Sharapova might get to the semis, but it stops there. I don't know what Hingis can do, 4th round probably, she is not ready for more. I hope Ana Ivanovic goes into the second week, she's a No.1 in the making.

I can't belive hewitt almost lost! vik choked in the end......Oh well I really want Hewitt and Roddick to go to finals. That would be a great match-up!
Considering the guy took 3 months off at the end of last year, it's not that surprising Hewitt's struggling right now. He's clearly missing match practice (even though he's played a few this year). Given his injuries back then, and his time spending with his wife and newborn, I reckon he hasn't had much chance to work on his game either.

Federer should be HUGE favourite on anywhere but clay. It makes picking winners a boring thing to do, as 90% of the people pick him, and the other 10% just seem to pick another player either because they are fan of another player, or they just hate Federer ;)

The thing is, that the players left in the draw who give Federer the most problems, are none of the high-seeded players (e.g. Kiefer, Haas!). For tennis' sake, Safin needs to regularly challenge him. Nadal we can count upon already for the coming years, if he stays healthy (his style is pretty hard on his body).

I think Federer's going to win 2 slams this year. 3 is possible, but everything has to be right -- a Slam is 2 weeks, a lot can still go wrong.

Perhaps:
AO Federer
FO Nadal
Wim Federer
US No idea!

I don't see Hingis going that far either. It will take some time for her to start playing well -- in fact, I don't know how good she will be again. Deep inside, she probably expects herself to be at the top very quickly again. Her ego would take a huge dent if she isn't able to.

Now Blake's out also:( Thanks LK! Way too many unforced errors which was also Venus' problem. Props to Robredo though, he played very well. Come on Andy and Lindsay!!
I can't say that I'm really surprised about Williams'. Serena is very out of shape and neither of them have played much in the last year to be match tough.

Wow, I can't believe Hewitt lost too. Man, the finals is looking to be Andy vs. Fecerere AGAIN. Maybye Andy can do some strategying when they play against each otehr in the finals IMO.

Hingis Hingis Hingis. What other reasons are there to watch the aussie open? Mens tennis died 15 years ago, but the Ladies shure do know how to put on a good match.
