After a long wait, Oden's debut comes to a hobbling halt

Only 2½ minutes into his NBA debut -- which was delayed for a year by knee surgery in 2007 -- the Portland Trail Blazers' center suffered what the team called a sprain in his right foot. He played on it for the rest of the first half in the season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers, but when the third quarter began Oden was back in the trainer's room, preparing for an X-ray.
Sixteen months of waiting … for less than 13 minutes of play.
The X-ray was inconclusive; Oden will have an MRI exam back in Portland on Wednesday.
And now a professional stat line that reads like this: 12:51 of playing time, five rebounds, two fouls, one blocked shot, 0-for-4 from the field, 0-for-2 from the line.
That's right, one year and four months from the day he was drafted, he has yet to score his first NBA point.

Spurs' Oberto (irregular heartbeat) to miss two games

SAN ANTONIO -- Spurs forward Fabricio Oberto will miss the first two games of the season after undergoing treatment for an irregular heartbeat.
Oberto told Spurs trainers during practice Tuesday that he felt a fluttering in his heart. A heart test confirmed the abnormal rhythm, known as atrial fibrillation. He underwent a procedure Tuesday night to restore his heart's normal rhythm.
The Spurs said Oberto will have daily heart tests for the next five days. If his heartbeat remains normal, he is expected to return Tuesday at home against Dallas. San Antonio opened the season Wednesday night against Phoenix.
The 33-year-old native of Argentina played in all 82 games last season, averaging 4.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.
Curry not expected to play in Knicks' opener, D'Antoni says

A year ago, Eddy Curry was the center of the New York Knicks' franchise, both literally and figuratively.
This season? Not even close.
Curry
New Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said he doesn't plan to play Curry in the team's season opener Wednesday against the Miami Heat, simply responding "no" when asked Tuesday if Curry would be part of his eight- or nine-man rotation.
Curry's minutes were limited in the preseason after he missed all of training camp because of a bacterial infection, and D'Antoni said he could have a hard time playing catch-up. D'Antoni also has not appeared confident with how Curry would fit in his high-tempo offense.
After playing in four of the seven Knicks preseason games (including one DNP/coach's decision), Curry was surprised by the news that he is not part of his coach's regular rotation.
