Are we heading to the same road as Larry Bird giving Hibbert a "diminished" role next season?

Pacers President Larry Bird and head coach Frank Vogel were both fairly direct about what, if any, role Hibbert will play in the team’s future plans.

“We assume he’s going to be back and if he comes back, we’re probably going to play another style,” said Pacers President of Basketball Operations Larry Bird. “And I can’t guarantee him anything. He’s going to have to earn it.”

I mean, understandably, Hibbert seems to be losing heart somewhere along the road at times. But could it be because of what he learned about his team playstyle changing? And he is no where near as good as Cuz. But it is scary to see teams admittedly going to try to play smaller ball and shelves their big center.

I'm not sure how you got from Hibbert to Cousins, but there is no comparison. Which you sort of off handedly admited. So then why do it? Look, Hibbert was not very good this season, and it was a chance for him to step up with George down with an injury, and Lance Stephenson traded. Instead he produced less. He only blocked 1.6 blocks a game, and that is supposed to be his strength. Hell, Cousins, who isn't considered a shotblocker, blocked 1.7 a game. Cousins name shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Hibberts. Instead of looking for a dark cloud in everything that comes down the pike, why not take things at face value.

Their comments about Hibbert don't have anything to do with playing small, they have to do with how badly he played. The guy is 7'2", and he only shot 44% from the floor.

well considering Roy averaged 10 and 6 for the season...having him in a diminished role isn't out of the question and I think the purpose of this thread might of been if Roy is in a diminished role for next season, he may be available for trade.

I'm a Hibbert fan when he is in the right situation, in other words when he is the 4th or 5th option, not the first or second. I think he can be our Omer Asik guy if we don't ask him to do too much besides play defense. Also while Cousins is on a different planet when compared to Hibbert, Cousins himself only shot 46% on the season and it is in fact his career average. Numbers mislead people. Hibbert is not in any way a number one or two or even 3rd option period, and that's where Indy had to put him due to the injuries they sustained. He's a big guy and I think he would help. But I'm much more inclined to see what happens draft day then I am for trading for him.

Hibbert's reduced role comes from him having a severe case of Samuel Dalembert syndrome more than anything else. The guy could be a great defensive role player and has been in the past but, at times, he gets the idea in his head that he's a top three option in the team's offense and winds up failing miserably.
