anyone else annoyed

Uhh... because you started it... You took an anecdotal remark by fnordius as license to go into your usual and predictable "Petrie is the greatest, and virtually infallible and a genius and stuff, and we should all give him unlimited benefit of the doubt because we have no right to criticize him because we're all mindless peons who don't deserve to wash his feet" rant.

I missed this quote. Where is it?

Just curious. What would you do if you were being paid to coach and team in your first year and your best talent was sitting on the bench while your 19 year old Center coming off knee surgury was getting hammered by players like Garrnett night in and night out pushing his confidence to an all time low and maybe him giving up on himself as a player and or a person. You got to remember this guy is 19 years old and don't need to playing big min until he is physically and emotionaly ready.

Fact is, he's going to get hammered by the KGs of the league whenever he runs into them. Whether it happens when he's older or younger doesn't change much, aside from how quickly he develops. Every player who came into the league young, from Kobe on, has gotten hammered by superstar vets, but it has usually helped their development, not harmed it. I remember watching this in action last year, when Justin would play against people like Tim Duncan. He started off getting tricked left and right, but you could watch him improve right before your eyes. Every time he got burned, he played a little smarter the next time around.

That's what Hawes needs right now. He doesn't need to sit on the bench until he gets older and has more emotional maturity. He got through college ball by being more skilled than average, and several inches taller than everyone else. To become better, he needs NBA level competition. Guys who are just as big as him, and much more experienced. He's not some delicate little flower whose ego is going to be scarred for life by playing against someone who is better than he is. He already knows that they're better. He just needs a chance to learn and catch up.

Glenn:

I think that Entity's reply to me, which Mr. Citrus referred to, would be the one which he linked to, which ended like this:
Lets see we have group of EX NBA players and and ppl thats been around coaching for year now serving as our coaches plus and EX player as our GM.

Lets assume those guy know more about running team and develping talent than you.

Us mortals get challenged when we exaggerate, ya know. Now I want to challenge this quote.

Since you mentioned Kobe did you know he only averaged 15 min a game his first season in the NBA and that only got that high because he start 6 meaningless games at the end of the season? Did you know that? I don't recall him having knee surgury 3 months before that season started either. But I guess Kobe wasn't developed right either.;)

None of this make the people who have the job uniquely qualified over everyone else to do the job.

So tell us, how many hours a day do you spend with Hawes, Bibby, Garcia and the gang? Are you at every practice?

If you know them better then the coach, I guess that would have to start with you interacting with those guys at least as much as he does, right?

I agree that it doesn't take any special college degree to be an NBA coach or a GM. It also doesn't take much to manage a restaurant. But, if someone has experience managing restaurants for 30 years and I'm comparing that to someone who's never managed a restarurant but only ate in them, well... I'll have to go with the guy who's been inside the business for 30 years. As a customer sitting at a table, you don't see much of what really goes on.

Kobe played 15.5 min/game as an 18 year old, 26 minutes as a 19 year old, and 38 as a 20 year old. Kevin Durant, who just turned 19 at the end of September, is averaging 33.5 minutes a game. Andrew Bynum, before he turned 19, was playing 22 minutes a game, and, having just turned 20, is now playing 29 min/game. Hawes turns 20 in 4 months, and is averaging 9.3 minutes per game. He has some catching up to do.

34 games into the season, Justin has played a grand total of 21 minutes. He's not injured, and he's not 18. There's no excuse for that.

Is this thread really happening?

I'd rather hear about Woodlands own Pedroia, then have to hear play by play about a team who's getting their ARSES handed to them. Other than that, to call for Nape's termination cause he talks Giants and Yanks?

What's next, Lamb has to leave KHTK cause he talks Trojans football and raves of Clovis?

No problem talking with Pedroia, the problem is the lack of professionalism from our commentators. Real professionals manage to interview a guest and still manage to update the viewers on the game. Watch a Giants broadcast sometime and see how real pros handle it.

Mike Lamb does not shove his USC background down the listeners throat - far from it. Rarely does he bring them up, unlike Napear who is constantly blabbing on the radio especially about his various NYC professional sports teams. When Lamb does bring up the Trojans on rare occasion he often qualifies any remarks with something like, "of course, I played there and hopefully will be unbiased." Lamb is a class act, Napear is not!

In starting this thread, I wasn't advocating that anyone be fired. Yeah, I get annoyed when Grant goes off on a New York tangent, but I don't want to take food out of his kids' mouths.

I guess what I'm wondering, knowing little about the TV and radio biz, is whether the producer or director would look at a tape of the telecast and make a point of talking to Grant about the amount of rambling he did.

I have the NBA league pass and watch a lot of out-of-market games, and Grant and Jerry simply aren't that bad compared to many broadcast teams. But the production values of the telecast are poor at times, to my eyes. The camera angles sometimes make me dizzy, and there are too many cases of the Kings (or opponents) scoring off camera as we're seeing a close-up of a referee or coach or some cut kid in the audience.

So if I've been running a different sort of business for the last 30 years, I should still defer to the expertise of a dishwasher, because he's worked in a restaurant?

Bill Ford was one of the worst CEOs Ford Motor Company had ever had, so they replaced him with a guy from Boeing. The University of Missouri is run by the former CEO of Sprint. The CEO of Blockbuster Video used to be CEO of 7-11. The CEO of Quiznos used to be CEO of Burger King, but before that he was president and COO of Continental Airlines. The CEO of Yum! Brands (Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, Long John Silver's, A&W) came there from Pepsi, and before that he was management in an advertising firm.

Business is business. It doesn't matter much if it's a restaurant or the NBA, being a manager is much the same everywhere.

I was sorta annoyed when they had these guests on for extended periods of time. I wouldn't mind seeing them chat it up at halftime or during the pregame or hell even a short stint live during the game, but that's not what happened. My eyes started rolling back in my head when Jerry started talking about being a caddy for the LPGA in the 60's....

I too was quite annoyed by the commentary and courtside interviews during the celtics game. I saw afew key plays unfold in the Kings favor, and they got nary a mention as Grant blathered on. And I absolutely cannot stand Jerry Reynolds. My friends and I can be heard saying "Shut up, old man!" alot when we're together watching games.

The G-Man....he's all class, and seems to immerse himself in the game, and being radio, needs to convey a sense of the game for listeners on the radio.

Overall, MSE could do alot to spruce up the broadcasts. Watch a Warriors game....they seem to have a slicker production value. Better graphics for intros, etc. And the announcer and color man seem to be alot more serious about their jobs than Grant and Jerry.

Lately when a Kings and Warriors game is on, I flip back and forth and get really jealous of the team they have. Monta Ellis seems to be getting better and better....good young team.

Still a Kings fan first and foremost though.

It wasn't meant to be a direct quote; it was meant to be me mocking what I interpret Entity's opinion regarding GM's in general (and Petrie in particular) to be.

I hate that Napear routinely turns a Kings TV broadcast (and more blatantly on his local radio show) into his personal New York City homer-team platform to the detriment of the Kings basketball and Sacramento area sports fans.

Grant Napear should be TERMINATED (finally!!) by MSE for this traitorous, relentless, promotion of “his” New York Yankees, “his” New York Giants, and assorted other East Coast biased views with insulting regularity. For over 20 long years Northern California sports fans have had to endure this smart-aleck twit who likely could never find a decent sports commentator gig in the highly competitive New York area market, yet survives year after year in Sactown.

Someone should maybe poll the question: "Should Grant Napear be fired by MSE?" I predict he would be in trouble if the Maloof's realized how much he is truely despised around here. The problem is the Maloof's claim they want to "get out into the Sacramento community" - but they only do occasional PR and photo-ops with no real connecting. Since we can't fire any of them, lets see about getting rid of that arrogant bozo Napear. We’ll worry about who should replace the red big head for the long-term later. Gary Gerrold could fill in nicely. Jason Ross could take over on radio. Clearly, it should be a TV broadcaster who won’t constantly shove “his” East Coast sports teams down our collective throats until we puke!!

I agree with most of what you said. I hate how he drones on about the NY Yankees and Giants. It's bad enough I listen to it on his radio show but, it is his show. I could turn it off. however, as the tv analyst of the Kings games I dont feel I should be subjected to his blathering on about NY sports franchises. I loathe it. I watch the Kings games for info on the Kings organization, the players, and the NBA. I dont want a video version of Sportsline. However, I believe you have to give credit where it is due. I think Grant is one of the very best NBA analysts in the NBA and while Jerry is a homer, the two seem to work....for me. But you are right. NO MORE YANKEES/GIANTS blubbering...please.

I believe I said "managed a restaurant".

Bill Ford was one of the worst CEOs Ford Motor Company had ever had, so they replaced him with a guy from Boeing. The University of Missouri is run by the former CEO of Sprint. Business is business. It doesn't matter much if it's a restaurant or the NBA, being a manager is much the same everywhere.

CEO is a different animal. How many do you know personally? It's way beyond managing the personnel on the line, or the buyers, or showing the receptionist how to answer the phone. In fact, I doubt they could show the receptionist how to answer a phone.

The debate was about basketball managing and coaching. The President of the Kings is a businessman, but Petrie isn't, neither is Theus. Petrie is the guy who knows the current suppliers. Theus knows how to show the receptionist how to answer the phones.

Certainly there is some high level business knowledge in running the Kings that most of us with business experience can understand. However, when it comes to the intimate knowledge of our current roster, none of us have anywhere near the knowledge that Theus and Petrie have.

We can discuss high level business concepts perhaps. But how much time Hawes should get in the next game is probably best made by the man with the knowledge of Hawes, the coach.
