I'm Just Saying

While visiting Israel recently, I met the First Secretary of the Chinese Embassy in Tel Aviv. When I told him that I live in Sacramento, he responded, "Oh! Sacramento Kings!"
The only thing this worldly diplomat knew about Sacramento was that it was the home of the Kings. He knew nothing else about Sacramento, including that it is the capital of California.
Whether or not one is a fan, Sacramentans need to know that the Kings help put us on the map.

I read it too. :)

I remember reading about a business woman, who travels extensively overseas. She said she always took some Kings gear with her and always amazed her how far and wide people may know nothing about Sacramento, except that it is where the Kings are. She gave a T-shirt to a dutch woman, who said her grandfather was a huge Kings fan. The gentleman lived in some remote rural area in the Netherlands. Amazing.

As to the Chinese gentleman not knowing Sacramento is the capital of Sacramento? Heck, at least he has an excuse. Before the Kings I'd run into a lot of Americans who don't know Sacramento is the capital of California.

Many didn't even know Sacramento was in California. And many said they'd never heard of Sacramento. They thought LA of SF was the capital. Kind of like a lot of people thinking NY City is the capital of NY.

Yet people persevere in the idea that being the capital of California put us on the map.

I've had it happen to me when I travel in the US for business. I mention I'm from Sacramento and they always immediately bring up the Kings.

Yup, same here. I get that even now...clients will call me up from accross the country and automatically say something like 'Man, you guys must REALLY hate the Lakers' or say something about the Maloofs.:D When we were contending a few years ago, EVERYONE was talking about the Kings anywhere I went accross the country.
