Amick Interview

Just heard Amick give an interview on ESPN 970 out of Modesto, and he had some interesting things to say- take it for what it is worth (he pretty much attributes all of his sources to "sources inside the Kings")

1) he is the source of the coaching list information- he got the info by pressing Petrie in an interview for his candidates, and it sounded like he was a little miffed that people like Crandell weren't giving him credit and just saying Petrie "announced" it.

2) He got the impression from Geoff that this was a "first-wave of interviews." He expected that some assistants from teams still alive would be considered, and that this list was not final. He also said that if Geoff went the college route he thought he would go big- bigger than Theus...

3) He thinks Brooks might be the frontrunner at this stage. Says that Geoff felt burned by getting one Muss during the interview and getting a compeltely different one on the court. Amick says that Geoff seems to be wary of this, and likes that Brooks is a known entity to him.

4) He says Geoff is actively shopping Artest, but it is hard to say if moving Artest or Bibby is more of a priority. One week it will be Artest, and one week it will be Bibby. He thinks one will be gone, but it is unlikely that both will be out.

5) He thinks more coaches than Carlisle are wary about coaching Artest. Carlisle was not the specific coach he was refferrring to when he said one candidate would not coach if Artest was on the team. He was referring to a second person, someone on the list of interested people, but not on this short list of 7.

6) He has been hearing all year that the Kings will go "big" in the draft. But, that was when the Kings thought they would be drafting in the 12-14 range. They thought that Hibbert/Hawes etc... would be available there, but might be overpriced at 10. Amick has been hearing a lot more about COnley from his Kings sources if the Kings draft in the 10 spot...

ANyway- that is what he had to say, take it for what it is worth...

This is great stuff, nice work. A few things:

1. It's good that Petrie is actively shopping both Bibby and Artest, but I consider moving Bibby the priority, unless...

2. Coaches really are wary of coaching Artest. If he is scaring potential coaches away, he really should go. But I don't get the feeling that Petrie will be settling for junk. He still will be the most talented expiring contract out on the market.

3. Hibbert will go before Conley.

Yeah really I hope that his Kings "insiders" don't seriously think that Hibbert or maybe even Hawes would be there at 12-14. That is beyond wishful thinking.

I see Hibbert slipping out of the top 10 come draft day! Too big a question mark over him. Has the size, below average athlete and below average lateral quickness for NBA.

This implies that Petrie views the problem with the Kings is one of chemistry - Bibby + Ron = Poor Chemistry ==> Losing. Not that the team needs to get blown to Kingdom Come and that both Bibby and Artest need to go. It implies that a youth movement is not in the cards. Or it may imply that they don't think they'd have enough luck to trade both.:)

This seems very realistic to me. As I said before, who in their right mind would want to coach Artest? Put the candidate who voiced concern about Artest at the top of the list!

It's interesting that they think both Hibbert and Hawes do not deserve to be in the top 10. Conley does seem reasonable.

If it were wishful thinking they would be thinking about taking them at #10. But they're not. This sounds like Kings' management believes they don't deserve to be in the top 10. If we accept that premise, who do they think should be included in the top 10?

Awful lot of implications being drawn from a couple of second-hand Petrie comments.

I wouldn't put any more stock in this Amick interview than anything else right now. The only thing we know for sure is that Petrie doesn't reveal anything to the media he doesn't want revealed. Amick has himself drawn some conclusions I don't think he can back up with definitive comments from Petrie... it's par for the course.

Petrie will do what Petrie does when he does it. Until then, all this speculation from Amick and other media is just an attempt to act like they know what's going on when none of them - or us - could possibly know. Petrie just doesn't reveal his hand.

What I find kind of funny is this whole pissing match between the Bee and KHTK. No one on from the Bee will go on their station so they have to go to a Modesto sports station  ???

No, Its that no one is allowed to go on KHTK. Ordered by the Bee brass.
