America's most miserable cities

Obviously they ranked it on a few key criteria and the unemployment, violent crimes and tax rate jacked it all the way up to #2 on the list.

I've spent several months in Detroit and there is no comparison. Detroit is a clear #1. When I got off the plane the first time and took a cab to my hotel I described the scene to whoever I called that night as something out of Beirut. While I haven't been to Flint I find it hard to believe that Stockton is between the two. The weather alone has to make it more miserable - I've never experienced anything more unpleasant than Michigan in the winter time.

I read that list. I don't agree with it based on what I know of the cities on it. However, the Central Valley is the poorest section of the US, including Appalachia (I think that section starts south of Sacramento). Stockton has a lot of economic problems and not a lot of good answers. Sac has the state government as an economic engine, which helps a lot.
