Alex Smith seeking second opinion - Could be out for the season

Here's a brief portion, enough to put a dagger in the heart of 49er fans...

A team source has told ESPN's Ed Werder that San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback Alex Smith is seeking a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews after preliminary MRI results indicated he appears to have suffered a serious injury to tendons in his right shoulder in Sunday's game.

If the diagnosis performed at Stanford is confirmed by Andrews, the source said that it is expected Smith would opt to have corrective surgery immediately even though he would likely miss the rest of the season...

(I added a brief quote from the article to your post, nebs...)

I've never really been sold on Alex Smith, but I don't wish him any ill will and I certainly don't want him out for the year.

Hey, I'm all for tanking it to get the 1st pick, if Alex is done...I mean, we still have a decent defense, but unless we're all healthy, we cant compete, as is the case with every team(see Chicago and Philly) We could use a big play reciever like Doucet from LSU, who we could get with a high pick. Down goes Lawson, down goes Davis, down goes Smith...down goes our season...

The 49ers won't have to tank. They aren't going to be doing much. Honest effort is better than forced failure, though. I simply cannot agree with the philosophy of intentionally losing games. The fans in the stands deserve better. But that argument has been done and done again, so I'll just hope Smith recovers quickly and the 49ers at least have a decent season (meaning better than last year).

Nolan wouldn't tank it that's for sure. Remember a few years ago the 49ers were in the running for the "Bush Bowl" and they won the last two games of the season ending up 4-12. Same thing last year, they lost a few spots in the draft by beating Denver.

I actually think Alex is a good QB but he's never had good protection in the pocket so he looks jittery. See what happened to Dilfer when he came in? He looked worse than Alex.

Better he sit out this season than get hurt permanently. He hasn't impressed me in what I've seen since the first game against a weak team.

And I say this as someone who'd like Alex to do well, not as a greedy Pats fan. I totally forgot they had the 9ers pick, for some reason I always think they have another pick from the Hawks.

Not so fast on that BSPN article

Don't panic about that ESPN report regarding Alex Smith's shoulder. Smith is not seeking a second opinion from noted orthopedic surgeon James Andrews at Stanford as ESPN reported last night. Instead, the team's head trainer, Jeff Ferguson, is friendly with Andrews and has sent Andrews a copy of Smith's MRI results, which were taken Monday. It's standard procedure at this level.

yeah, and to top it off...the Cowboys are probably going to win the NFC...I just wish we had a fast forward button for times like these in life.:D

update on Smith from the Bee Blog

This just in re: Smith's shoulder

Dr. James Andrews, the noted orthopedic surgeon in Birmingham, Ala., today confirmed the team's original diagnosis on Alex Smith -- he has a Grade 3 shoulder separation and does not need surgery. The team sent Andrews the results from Monday's MRI.

Damn, could you imagine if we ended up with a top 3 pick and it goes to the Pats! They are already unstoppable!

Given that they just picked up a HOF reciever in the offseason for a 4th round pick, not sure they really need the Niners Top 5 pick as well.

We won't get a top 5 pick. Smith could be back as soon as the Giants game thanks to the bye. He's not gonna miss the whole season. We just need The Disease(Vernon, VD) to get his knee healthy also and we need our OLine to improve and we'll be back on track.

Speaking of that O-Line... looks like Jonas Jennings won't be playing Sunday.

J. Jennings out for Ravens game

The hits just keep on coming for the 49ers. Today, they learned they will be without left tackle Jonas Jennings who will miss Sunday's game because of what Mike Nolan termed a "private matter." Nolan said he wasn't sure when Jennings will return. "He has a private matter he has to deal with this week," Nolan said. Adam Snyder, who filled in for Jennings last year, will start at left tackle against Baltimore. The 49ers have a bye the following week.

After the morning walk through, I saw an upset Jennings standing by himself outside the team facility. He later was joined by Nolan and the team chaplain Earl Smith. Nolan said Jennings would not be going to his Atlanta home but would remain in the Bay Area.

Hopefully the O-Line can protect him from getting that shoulder crushed again. Now we have to worry about Frank Gore's status for Sunday. So far they've said he's probable for the game. Darrell Jackson and Jonas Jennings were listed as questionable as of yesterday.
