Peja Stojakovic believes he and Jermaine O'Neal could be cornerstones for the Indiana Pacers.
But first Stojakovic and his new team need to agree on a contract.
Stojakovic came to Indiana from Sacramento in a midseason trade for Ron Artest. He wants to stay, even though he'll officially become a free agent next month, his agent David Bauman said.
"There's no question Peja was happy in Indiana," Bauman said. "He would like to re-sign, and he would like to finish his career as a Pacer."
Pacers president Larry Bird has said keeping the 28-year-old Stojakovic is a priority. The 6-foot-10 forward averaged 19.5 points in 40 regular-season games after the trade.
"We want to do what's best for the franchise," Bird said recently. "Hopefully, we can get a deal done with him."
Bauman said Stojakovic and O'Neal could become one of the best inside-outside tandems in the league.
O'Neal averaged 20.1 points and 9.3 rebounds this season, playing hurt during much of the second half. Stojakovic, an eight-year veteran, has career averages of 18.4 points and 5.1 rebounds.
"He thinks that with him and Jermaine ... they can build around them," Bauman said.
But Stojakovic also missed 11 games this season and 16 last season because of injuries, including a protruding disc in his lower back, a sprained right pinkie finger and a strained groin. He missed four of Indiana's six playoff games with a sore right knee as the Pacers lost in the first round to New Jersey.
Still, Bauman said he left a meeting with Pacers CEO Donnie Walsh feeling confident the Pacers would try to get a deal done.
"We're making a lot of phone calls, but he asked me to give the Pacers every opportunity to re-sign him. If the Pacers do what they say they're going to do, that should happen," he said.
Stojakovic had an early termination clause in his six-year contract that allowed him to choose after the fifth year whether to finish the contract or become a free agent. His current contract would pay him $8.125 million next season.

He'll probably stay considering Larry Legend thinks so highly of him. Just don't ask him to play hurt, contribute in the playoffs or bring anything else to the table that isn't related to shooting the damn ball.

Anyways, I wouldn't want my favorite team to sign him cause if his J isn't dropping he's as easy to shut down as a 12 year old school girl during recess.

Was he really kept out of the playoffs b/c of sprained right pinkie???

Peja chose to sit out because he had a knee boo-boo. I don't think ANY playoff team should sign the guy. Peja becomes a liability any time you put pressure on him.

hey, I used to know some 12yr old girls who could flat out ball. a couple went on to be high school bball champs. ;)

If Peja can remain relatively healthy next season, and regain his shooting touch, he should be a nice compliment to JO for the Pacers (except while playing the Kings, ofcourse). The playoffs however are a completely different story altogether.

Urgh, I don't want to sign him.

I presume that your sentiments are more to do with Granger's development and Pedja's projected price tag, in which case you're right and extending Pedja would be wrong for a team with more versatile young SF and salary cap issues. However, I can't help myself thinking that Indy's cap issues are more to do with other horrifics contracts (if Pedja's is averaging 9-10 mil, so nowhere near max) and with a different coach playing Pedja and Danny at 2 and 3 could be just what the Pacers need. Think about it this way, Pedja's 18/5 is almost guaranteed and usually very efficient. The fact that he is too passive in clutch and PO's is detriment to his contract value but could be advantagous to Danny's development. The kid has already shown that he is fearless.

Also, with JO's contract size, injuries and JO closing in on 3-0 (thirty years) you can't really wait for much longer.

I know that you wich you got Kevin instead, but it is what it is, Soup. ;)

As for Pedja himself, major ****storm is brewing. I think that since he is an FA he will skip Worlds this year and Moderators on PD and KF.com will have to work overtime to fend off haters this summer. I am pissed off already.

I think it makes more sense for him to skip WC this year than skipping EC last year.

Him playing at WC can hurt his free agency if he gets hurt. Last year it would have been a non issue.

But aren't the WCs in August?

He should be signed by June, no?

I think that since he is opting out he cannot be signed before some time in July. He would miss the training camp and indications are that he will miss both camp and consequently WC.

I just don't think they can play together like that. Who's going to be the 2?

Pedja. He is a 2. Just think about it, he can shoot and when he is agressive he can get to the basket or line by cutting. He is not gonna post up much if at all, he is below average rebounder for his size/position. In Europe, where it is not essential for SG to be able to drive to the hoop with the ball or monopolize ball in ISO's he always played the 2. Danny would have to defend better/faster man from the opposing 2-3, but you want that no matter who is at the 2.

It may not be ideal and it may require a lot of flexibility and like I said a new coach, but having seen Indy play this year, I have to say that Danny and Pedja were your two best players in terms of getting their respective jobs done. Of course, JO is the best player on Pacers but he was banged up or triple teamed into oblivion. I can't help but think that those three playing starter's minutes would be a good start. Make Danny "always a 3" and switch Pedja between 2-3 depending on matchups. Don't play Pedja 40 minutes a game anymore. He'll either slow down or break down.

If I am Pacers GM, I build around JO (trading him would be really stupid) and I get players that complement him. Of course, if you can sign and trade Pedja for a pure SG it would be better. But it has to be a no brainer as JO is not getting any younger and you can't wait on Danny to develop into a stud that he promisses to be.
