The #7 and #13 picks could be an attractive package to move up a couple spots in the draft. It's worth exploring for that reason alone I think.
This one sure is not the draft to trade multiple assets to move a couple of places higher. Talent is all over the place and this year there's probably 50% chance that either #7 or #13 will have a better career than #4.
It's absolutely stupid for Dallas to do anything before July, 1st: nobody have cap space to lend them, and value of #13 is very mediocre to get an important player. I would say Dallas is making a pick and there will be no trade announced on draft day, but it's possible there will be a contingency to move player drafted at #13 and Marion somewhere if Paul and Howard are coming to town.
Is it possible for Vivek to just offer cash for a #1 pick? And that way it wouldn't be charged to Dallas's cap space?
The word I'm getting is that the Mav's will trade the pick if your willing to take on Marion's salary, or your willing to give up a 2014 first round, preferly a lottey, pick. Cuban said that the team will wait until its their turn to pick, and if his staff thinks there's someone there that has star potential, they'll take him, but that he didn't think that was likely. So they'll probably choose for another team and then announce the trade after the pick.
Now just because thats what the Mav's want, that doesn't mean thats what they'll get. I seriously doubt any team would trade a potential lotter pick in the 2014 draft for the 13th pick in this draft. The 2014 draft is the deepest and most talented draft in the last 10 or 15 years. At the same time, how many teams are willing to eat up their cap space by taking on Marion's salary for the 13th pick in the draft?
Just playing around with numbers:
Kings
in: Pick #13
Marion: 8.6M
out
JT 5.2
Kings absorb 3.4M with current cap space (we have about 4.5M)
Celtics:
in:
JT 5.2
Carter: 3.1 (expiring)
out:
Pierce 16.7
Dallas:
in:
Pierce 16.7 (then buyout for 5M)
out:
Marion 8.6
Carter 3.1
Why for Kings: get the #13 pick and our 12/8 vet SF.
Why for Celts: only if they like JT as a piece for future better than just buying out Pierce themselves
Why for Dallas: After buyout, they clear about 7M in cap plus the cap hold for the #13 pick. Go after Paul/Howard as FA.

Thats actually pretty close. JT is a young, quality big who has his best years ahead of him
I'm going to disagree with you on that one. The point of the draft is to acquire players who can help make your team better. If you feel like a player available at 4 or 5 but not at 7 is going to significantly help your team, than it is worth it to trade up. If you can expend an asset to turn Spencer Hawes into Joakim Noah, for instance, that's still a net benefit. Now if you're picking names out of a hat, granted two shots at picking a winner is better than one, but that's not what's happening here (hopefully).
Could offer up Thornton... Mayo's a free agent, and Thornton is a definite upgrade for the Mavs.
Kings group renounced their right for RS, they proclaimed PO is not a primary goal. I would say Vivek is preparing you to accept the fact that Kings won't be amnestying Salmons.
What does "PO" and "RS" stand for?
This would be a great deal if we could find a way to swing it. I'd love to have Marion for a year, even if he was a little grumpy about going to a non-contender. And while it's a pretty weak draft, this does give us tradeable assets for down the road plus a way to cheaply solve our lineup holes in the short term (pick from passing/true floor general, defense, defensive rebounding, 3 point shooting, shotblocking...ouch).
Further down the rabbit hole, with these assets you could experiment with an unorthodox lineup of McCollum (#7) and MCW (#13), where MCW would be the primary PG (due to his passing ability) and McCollum would play SG off the ball while occasionally bring the ball up the court. The two could theoretically switch on defense allowing appropriate size matchups on the other end of the floor. The hope is that both can defend, MCW finds a semblance of a shot, and McCollum can play off the ball more than he did in college while being able to score against larger, more athletic 2-guards. Would definitely be interesting...
Regardless, I'm all for this trade if we can figure out how to deliver Dallas the cap room it needs.
