A New Arena Concept - Take a Look!

Fellow Kings fans, attached is my contribution to the new arena discussion. These are various perspective views of a conceptual new arena 3D model. It's offered here to stir the imagination and provide a visual reference point of what could be possible. Sure, a new arena may look nothing like this, and probably won't, but criticism and negativity only serve to divide our cause. Let's try to stay positive and think of the possibilities. I hope others will post their own sketches and design ideas.

About the concept?

The "spaceship" design just isn't functional for arenas. I would actually prefer something more along the lines of Gund Arena in Cleveland.

You'll notice that the concourse is significantly wider than Arco as well being opened up to the interior arena at four locations, similar to Raley field whereby you can still see what's going on while going to the concession stands. Also, in the suite view notice the tables and chairs overlooking the arena for those who don't want to take food and beverage down to their seat.

Answers

The answer to the question of how do we pay for this is probably going to be a combination of three sources (1) An unknown corporate entity (2) The Maloofs (3) A seat tax, perhaps $10/seat/event for all events held at the new arena. This will place the burden on those that use the facility and not on the taxpayers.

As to where a new arena can be built, I propose the Arden Creek Golf Course that sits between Haggin Oaks GC and the Softball Stadium adjacent to the Capital City Expressway. City owned land, good visibility, good location, good freeway access and would be a higher and better use for the land.

You're right, of course. I apologize for my flippant remarks. If this post stirs the imagination of others and they also come up with viable alternatives, it just keeps the arena idea in mind. And if that happens, we all stand to gain.

Am I blind, or is this bench (bleacher type) seating all the way around this arena? Talk about uncomfortable. I cannot imagine paying the kinds of prices that NBA games command without have a seat with a back on it.

Design Thoughts

For those of you wondering, I am not an architect and only enjoy creating 3D models as a hobby. Anyone can do what I've done here using a fantastic program called Sketchup 5.0. Not only can you create the model and take these perspective views but you can also tour the facility in a walk-through tourguide mode. I have done a 2 min quicktime movie tour of the building that leads you through the concourse down to the court. Unfortunately it's a 23mb file and too large for downloading. The fact is this program capability may help when the time comes to design a real arena.

As to your comments and questions here are some thoughts regarding creation of the design.

1) There are no seats because they would be too time consuming to create and also have file size memory limitations.
2) I've tried to widen the concourse, put restrooms on the inside of the concourse to lessen the cross traffic we now get at Arco, open up the interior of the arena to the concourse unlike the closed in situation now, and provide more concession stands to lessen wait times.
3) Included are two eating overlook areas for those not wanting to bring food and beverage back to their seats but still want to experience the game or event.
4) There is a lower and upper concourse as well as a perimeter walkway and mid level walkway to improve circulation and take traffic off of the main concourse.
5) Consideration was given to try to get more seating in the lower level and less in the upper deck.
6) In this model there are 72 suites vs. 30? currently at Arco.
7) A circular building may be the easiest and least costly to build.
8) Certainly this concept doesn't address engineering issues, only overall functionality and aesthetics.

Are you designing this SOLELY as a venue for the Kings and Monarchs. It looks that way and, quite frankly, that isn't going to be much of a selling point with the Sacramento citizenry at large.

This has to be about a new venue that will still be able to accomodate concerts, truck pulls, motocross races, rodeos, etc.

Do you have any statistics to substantiate your comment about a circular building being the easiest and least costly to build?

In order to really determine whether this type of structure would even be feasible, I think we need to be able to compare present Arco dimensions, including concourse width, SEAT width (which is much more important than you might reailize), capacity for various activities, etc.

Those are, IMHO, the types of questions that the average non-rabid Kings fan might be interested in knowing about.

All of what you see in the lower section including the court area, and the first level of rise of seats are all temporary and removable seats just like at Arco. I tried to use a different texture on those lower step levels to indicate they could be removed to create a very large circle for all of those events mentioned.

Please understand that this model was drawn "on the fly" without any pre-existing 2D drawings or dimension information. The purpose is to provide an example of how design considerations can be discussed in collaboration with others. If you want a really excellent model you start with true architectural plans that take into consideration all of the precise measurements you've talked about. But that wasn't the intent here. If I were to do it again I would be better prepared with these specifications to make a more accurate model.

What this model does allow for is the type of observations and conclusions that can only come from direct manipulation of these infinite perspective views and walkthrough tours. Until now that capability hasn't been possible at a reasonable cost and effort.

It's a nice drawing and it's clear you've put a lot of work into it.

BUT - and this is really important - don't you think the Maloofs already have a pretty good idea of what the arena THEY want to build will look like? It's not about trying to figure out what a new arena should look like.

It's actually about how that arena will be funded, where it will go, etc. The cosmetic details are totally irrelevant until and unless those other questions are answered. And, as I mentioned before, I'm pretty sure Maloof Sports and Entertainment has a very good idea of the type of structure they want to see, based on a wide variety of considerations, including league requirements, optional venue use, local ordinances, etc.

As I said before, it's clear you've done a lot of work on this. I shouldn't have gotten us off the track with detail questions because the main issue at stake isn't the structural design anyway. It's about the financing, with the location right in there. Until and unless those issues are resolved, the whole arena is dead in the water anyway...

In my view if the Maloofs do have conceptual plans for a new arena perhaps they should have released them to the public earlier to help build support. John Saca has been very successful getting deposits and proceeding with construction of his downtown condo towers project with nothing more than a good marketing program supported by slick illustrations. What comes first, figuring out the financing dilemma or creating a conceptual design? IMHO a picture tells a thousand words and creates an emotional response (hopefully positive). Unless people can visual an idea or concept it doesn't exist. In order to build support you've got to stimulate the imagination and appeal to the senses. Many of life decisions are based upon emotion. Logic and reason only takes you so far and ultimately you choose to buy or do something because "it just feels right". I believe the public will get onboard if they can see what they are getting.

The original mock up showed seats Consider those benches there as place holders. There would be seating in it.
