OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Philadelphia 76ers traded center Steven Hunter to the New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday for two second-round draft picks.

It's the Hornets' second trade in a 24-hour span in an attempt to reinforce their front line following the dismissal of forward Chris Andersen last week for violating the NBA's drug policy.

"We were real small," coach Byron Scott said at the team's shootaround. "We've gotten bigger in a matter of minutes."

Hunter, a 7-footer, is averaging 4.9 points and 3.4 rebounds in 35 games with the 76ers this season. A first-round pick by Orlando in 2001, he played three seasons with the Magic and one with Phoenix before signing with Philadelphia as a free agent before this season.

"We're excited. We bring in another athlete, a 7-foot athlete, 24 years old who runs and jumps and does a lot of the things that we want here," Scott said. "I think he'll fit in extremely well."

The Hornets are giving up their 2006 and 2007 second-round picks and will also receive cash considerations from Philadelphia. On Tuesday, the Hornets acquired Aaron Williams from Toronto for their other 2006 second-round pick and a 2009 second rounder. Williams is expected to be in uniform for New Orleans' game against Chicago on Wednesday night.
The Hornets have two first-round picks in this year's draft, including one they received from Milwaukee when they swapped Jamaal Magloire for Desmond Mason in the preseason.

"We were able to get a young center that we feel is going to get much better and better, that's shown improvement," Scott said. "He had his best year in Phoenix playing the type of basketball that we play. And then we got a veteran in Aaron Williams. We've still got our first-round picks."
Unlike Williams, who played for Scott in New Jersey for more than three seasons, Hunter may take longer to fit in.

"There'll be an adjustment for Steven because this is an offense that he hasn't done," Scott said. "But again, once we get him in, we'll go over it every single day with him just to try to get him as comfortable as possible. ... I don't think it'll take him real long because one thing that we do a lot of is repetition on our offense."

Hornets got a good shotblocker for two second round picks. Kings could have used him too.

Hornets did some good work the last 2 days. They had salary cap room so they could make these deals. Aaron Williams and Hunter decent players and they only gave up 4 second round picks!!

I kinda like Hunter, but he's not that good a rebounder and has a big contract. Pretty good defender and athlete though. I doubt he'd play in Sac anyways, as we already have Skinner who doesn't get regular PT consistently, and Sampson who barely plays only for garbage time.

Another solid move by the Hornets.

Hunter is overrated, and if this was for the Kings, I wouldn't give up two second round picks. But on the Hornets, with Chris Paul, maybe they could make it work, maybe.

Hunter is a good shot blocker, and he will fit in nicely into the role that Chris Andersen provided for them. This definitely keeps the Hornets in the playoff chase.

Man I don't know if we have the cap, but I would have definately of got him for 2 second round picks.

More about this from 76ers side:

"Steven Hunter, a 5-year contract worth a little more than $16.5 million notwithstanding, was never as advertised. He could run and jump, but he couldn't rebound the way the 76ers had hoped. He could block shots, but he couldn't rotate effectively in their defensive schemes. In the end, he couldn't stay. He was a mistake, but in terms of NBA money, not a terribly expensive one." Philadelphia Daily News

"Sixers president/general manager Billy King cleaned up the error yesterday, sending the 7-foot (Steven) Hunter and cash considerations to the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets for second-round draft choices in 2006 and '07, at the same time creating a $2.85 million trade exception because he did not take back a player in the deal." Philadelphia Daily News

"The additional second-round pick this season, the trade exception, the elimination of Hunter's salary, plus the $4.45 million trade exception created last August when Marc Jackson was sent to the New Jersey Nets gives the Sixers some flexibility both before and after the Feb. 23 trading deadline." I bet the Sixers go after Eric Williams soon, they've been wanting him for a bit.

Hunter not a Hornet yet:

"Traded Wednesday to the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets, the 7-foot center (Steven Hunter) apparently didn't pass his physical. That left the trade of Hunter and cash considerations for second-round draft choices in 2006 and '07 temporarily on hold. Also on hold was the $2.85 million trade exception the Sixers created in the deal."

"We're in discussions," Sixers president/general manager Billy King said. "Our doctors are talking with their doctors." There was no word on the specific nature of the problem. King was hoping to have the situation resolved in the course of the weekend."

And so, Hunter - back as a 76er:

Press Release - Philadelphia 76ers President Billy King announced today that the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets have rescinded a trade that would have sent Sixers center/forward Steven Hunter to the Hornets in exchange for two second-round picks in the 2006 and 2007 NBA Drafts. The two teams originally announced the trade last Wednesday, Feb. 1 pending a physical.

New Orleans/Oklahoma informed us today that they were rescinding the trade for Steven Hunter," said King. "They had some concerns after Steven's physical examination and feel that rescinding the trade is in their best interest. This will not prohibit Steven from playing for the Philadelphia 76ers . We expect to have him back in a 76ers uniform shortly."
