538 forecast.

All-Star
The Kings currently are forecasted by 538 to have the 5th worst record at 29-53. It is a bit unusual as the team above (spurs) is 34-48 and the team below (rockets) is 24-58. No other team not an an extreme has a 5 game gap in one direction much less both directions.

It will be interesting to see how far the Kings finish from this point as teams tank and the Kings start their annual futile run for the play in.

Why is the play in even a thing.

I thought it was only instituted after that Covid lockdown season to kind of bring fairness to teams that could have theoretically made the 8th seed.

they’re gonna try it out this season again and it will mostly like be successful for ratings and they’ll keep it.

I hate the play-in too btw.

5th worst record would be nice. Hopefully it can lure a coach in

The play-in is Vivek’s wet dream. He thinks that the Kings hitting such a low bar will somehow translate to respectability and be a springboard for future success. Utter folly.

You honestly think a coach is going to make or break a decision on where our FRP ends up, if we even keep it?

If a coach is considering taking a job here (assuming one is even open), I highly doubt where the FRP is even enters the equation. He/she will be considering overall team composition, salary, organizational make-up and existing staff, etc., a LOT higher than if our FRP is #3 or #6, or whatever. That could be traded away on draft day (assuming we still have it past this year's trade deadline) and never comes to fruition to us anyways.

sure it can. There might be a player that he really really likes he can coach up from day 1 as a pro

And the team may not select that player in the draft. You know, like we've experienced a few times recently.

If the FO wanted to hire me, i would tell them I’m only taking the job if I get to pick the player with the FRP

It...doesn't work that way. That's what the GM is for - to make personnel decisions. The coach can express an opinion, but everyone has a lane to stay in. Unless you want another Vivek and Dumars to continue to muddy the GM waters?

Yah but it’s the Kangz. Vivek ain’t gonna let the GM pick the coach so I wouldn’t be surprised if it went down this way

5 years ago I would have been a little more interested. Nate silver is great with numbers far better than I am but in the last few years he's basically turned into clickbait making just odd commentary to get attention.

For a coach it obviously matters a lot wether our pick is top 3 compared to our usual 8-12. Top 3 pick makes the job much more attractive since the possibilty of improving the overall talent of the team is much better drafting at the top rather than 10th. Drafting 10th doesnt statistically move the needle much but top 3 has a probable enough upside of getting an all star level player that isnt otherwise obtainable for a franchise like Kings.

YEAH BUT WHAT IF YOU DRAFT A BUST LIKE MARVIN BAGLEY HMMM?????

All I know is that if you draft a guy in the top 3, you better play him. If you think the squad you currently have is too good to play your top 3 pick, then you're delusional AND you should have traded the pick you believe you didn't need for a veteran.

If you draft BPA in the lottery, but that position on your team is already stacked, trade one or two of the players at the stacked position at the deadline when you've determined who best fits your team.

It's not simply draft position. It's how you manage the assets that matter. History has shown that draft position for the Kings doesn't matter, because they can't manage the assets when they get them.

The Kings are a perfect example of wasting so many lottery picks over the years because a more win now role player was better suited at the time. TRob was never going to be a great player, but give him starter minutes and he's putting up 15 and 10 from day 1. Bagley, probably 20 and 10. That's much easier to use later on in trade than players middling in the range of 12-24 mpg and still losing anyway. Not saying Holmes is Jason Thompson or will become that since he's got much better athletic tools but Monte better keep and eye on that. Otherwise at some point he or another GM might have to scrap a 1st round pick to dump his deal at some point too. Don't stack similar players, and don't spend assets or cap to do so if you aren't winning. The only thing worth doing that at right now is on the wing. Stack away there, PG? C? Nope. Bad, bad idea.
