HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. -- After 35 years in prison for stealing a black-and-white television set, Junior Allen is a free man.

Allen, 65, walked out of prison Friday, ending a case that attracted widespread attention because he remained in jail while other inmates convicted of murder, rape or child molestation were released.

'TOO MUCH TIME'

"I'm glad to be out," Allen said. "I've done too much time for what I did. I won't be truly happy until I see a sign that says I'm outside of North Carolina."

Allen was a 30-year-old migrant farm worker from Georgia with a criminal history that included burglaries and a violent assault when he sneaked into an unlocked house and stole a 19-inch black-and-white television worth $140 US.

Some state records say Allen roughed up the 87-year-old woman who lived there, but he was not convicted of assault.

Instead, he was sentenced in 1970 to life in prison for second-degree burglary. The penalty for the offence has since been changed to a maximum of three years.

The state Parole Commission decided last year to release Allen if he behaved and completed a transitional work-release program. He worked at a restaurant washing dishes and floors and had no prison infractions during the past three years.

His parole could last up to five years, meaning he could gain complete freedom by age 70.

Thats just sick... completely obvious that it was a race related sentencing. He commited the crime but LIFE in prison for stealing a TV? Geeze... lucky he got it down to 30... Crazy.

The irony is, he probably took the T.V. to watch the Andy Griffith Show.

Who doesn't love Opie? ;)

Oh gee, here we go again. Why is it that everytime a ridiculous sentence is handed out to a black man, it is all of a sudden "obviously race related"? Couldn't it have been an incompetent judge? Maybe the laws were different back then, this was 30 years ago mind you. What if the judge himself was black? What would you say then? Why is it that black people who are put in a bad situation given a free pass? What if it was a white man who had been put in jail for that long? Would you make such a deal about it being race related? I'm willing to bet my life savings that you wouldn't.

Now before someone starts calling me a Neo-Nazi or whatever, my best friend is black, and I don't see him complaining if he gets checked for his ID from the cops, or if someone at Fry's asks him to open his backpack. I mean, seriously, maybe if people would just stop looking for things to be race related, then maybe they'd stop being race related and just be a simple case of incompetence, or bad luck, or whatever. Making excuses for people just makes them weaker.

so you agree that the man was black!

I know he was, but that's besides the point. I mean, it just so happens the man was black this time. But what if the next time it was a white man, would a comment race related come up? I highly doubt it.

No ...

Exactly, so why should it be such a big deal if the perpetrator was black? Are we not for "equal rights"? As long as people keep making excuses and sympathizing with the "poor black man" then this whole racism thing remains an issue. And don't give me that crap about them being oppressed by white men. I'm from China, we're oppressed by our own damn government and you don't hear us whining about it.

lil rob, love the second line of your sig btw.

doone why are you so mad? no one said anything but you..... your having a great time arguing with yourself about the "poor black man"......... LOL

i said i wonder what race he was......... your the one that said he was black... its funny how u think this isnt racism but somehow u know the man is black....... wierd how that works doesnt it?

is there really? i dont see it........

It's too bad that the link you posted doesn't have the picture. The point I was insinuating is the same though. Its unfair to bring race into a discussion that doesn't warrant it. I read that story before you posted it on this site. Here is a much better link with more information regarding the man, including the fact that even though the white woman and family who lived in the house claimed he beat her up, he wasn't charged with assault. Likely because it couldn't be proven. Even moreso, the sentence for that crime at that time was up to life in jail, regardless of race. Did you also know that he had a criminal history of violent crimes? I wonder if that weighed more heavily on the sentence than what race he was did.

Don't assume everything is race related, especially without having all the facts.

I guess the lesson here is to avoid stealing TVs in Georgia.

I think convicted Sacramento grafiti specialists and taggers should be caned at Cesar Chavez Park downtown at noon.

Child molesters should be subject to death by Bonka.
