2009 SF Giants Thread

Giants might be a wild card team (for now), but I guarantee you there isn't a manager out there that wants to face this pitching staff in the post season!

That's a great photo and really tells a story. What a roller-coaster season for Sanchez. I mean he begins the year full of potential, goes 2-8, gets demoted and now a spot-start for Randy and he throws a no hitter.

Hopefully, he can take this confidence into the rest of the year. I'm still buzzing from last night. SFGiants.com has the press conference up along with great articles about Rowand and Whiteside regarding last night for those who are interested.
 
Went to the game tonight. Oh man, did Cain get drilled. I was up in section 325 and you could hear the ball hit him. It was brutal. To his credit, he stayed and tried to pitch but the ball went about 10 feet over Eli's head.

First it was Lincecum, then Sanchy's no-no and now our Pen stole the show. Miller, Medders, Romo, Affeldt, and Wilson were spectacular tonight. Big Panda with another homer proving further that he should be an all-star.

Going for the sweep tomorrow!!
 
Update on Cain

Manager Bruce Bochy took it another step further, saying his pitcher was "doubtful."

"It's probable," said Cain, who will attend the festivities in St. Louis even if he's unable to pitch. "I'm going to try to stay more hopeful than 'doubtful.' It'd be great to go and throw [Tuesday], but for the situation we're in here, playing ball real well, it'd be better to take that time and get it right."

Cain and the Giants' training staff will get together Sunday and re-evalauate the pitcher's status.

I am so glad that Tim will be starting for the NL but don't you think that Haren is the best pitcher in the NL this season? It's really hard for me to decide because I am a SFG fan and I obviously want my guys to succeed. However, I am really impresed with Haren's 0.8 WHIP!!! It is tremendous to have it after 130 IPs.

Nah, Lincecum has been the most dominant pitcher in the NL aside from like 2 early starts. Haren has been spectacular.. but there's a fine line between spectacular and dominant.

And this is exactly the question - WHY?? Why Timmy is dominant and Haren is not? Because of Ks?

I am really trying being objective ...

Both played 18 games and have about 130 IPs, both have 3 CGs ... however
Haren has better WHIP 0.81 (Tim has 1.05) and ERA 2.01 (Tim has 2.33). But what make Haren's stats even more amazing is the fact that he pitches at one of the worst ballparks for pitchers.

Well, again if you eliminate Timmy's 2 (3?) early starts then they are practically even in the WHIP category. Take a look at this chart..

This shows, that aside from the early few starts in the year.. they would be practically even.

As far as the K's go, take a look at Timmy's K/IP... He's pitched 127.2 IP and has struckout 149 batters!! :eek:
That is dominant! Haren has 129 in 130 IP which is impressive as well.

The reason I think Timmy has more BBs is because he pitches more for the K. Another crazy stat to look at is HR allowed. Tim has allowed only 4 HRs!! FOUR. all year. Granted, he does play in a pitcher-friendly park, but that is still amazing. He is facing big league hitters out there. Haren has allowed 12, which is good but a world away from 4.

So, again - stats aside, I think if you minus the first couple early starts from Timmy, you will see that every category Haren is beating him in, would be even. I think they took that into effect and then looked at all of the other categories in naming Timmy the starter for tonight.
 
Rough first inning by Timmy in St. Louis, but overall not bad. Seemed nervous, once he calmed down he was fine. But wow, another win for the AL.

In other Giants news, get ready.. Buster has been promoted to Fresno!! :D

Giants prospect Buster Posey was promoted to Triple-A Fresno on Tuesday, ending weeks of speculation surrounding the Minors' top catcher.

Posey, 22, will make his Triple-A debut on Thursday against Colorado Springs when the Grizzlies return from the Triple-A All-Star break.

Watching the Giants play the Pirates in Extras.. I have to watch the game with Pittsburgh broadcasters...

If I hear them refer to one of their players as "Buc-O" one more time, I may do something drastic.. :mad:
 
So, who would've thought that Zito would be our stopper? :p

Seriously though, Giants've got to get their act together with this weekend series in Colorado. We're already falling out of the West contention. We can't afford to fall any further behind the Rockies.

In other news, Congrats to Mark Buerhle (Sp?). He threw a perfect game today vs the Rays. First since Randy.
 
Any SF trade rumors?

I am glad we did not acquire Holiday ... too expensive for rent. However, as a player, he would have been a nice fit for us.

Unfortunately, we do not have a lot of stuff to offer. We have 3 good tradeable prospects but I hope they are untouchable. We cannot afford to lose them unless we get Adrian Gonzalez for Posey or Alderson :)

We can get Uggla or Cantu in real life. Would you trade Alderson to get one of them?
 
Like we landed Ryan Garko for single A left-handed pitcher Scott Barnes.

Don't really know much about Garko.. what do you guys think of the pick up??
 
Appears that Barnes was one of their better pitching prospects, but well behind Bumgarner and Alderson, which made him expendable with the young pitchers already in the rotation. Garko isn't exactly a monster, but he'll provide more power than any other 1st basemen they've fielded. I'll take this move over burning a more premium prospect on a higher level of veteran.
 
Ok move. Garko is a decent hitter .. nothing special - just a solid 0.285 15/85 guy. I guess he will be our second best hitter and it says a lot about our offense :)

The main thing - we improved our offense without losing big-time prospects. However, Garko will not solve our problems. We need at least one more Garko to say that our offense is improved :)
 
I have to say, I don't know too much about Garko since he is a AL guy but it seems as others have stated, he will be our 2nd best power guy. He will probably be our best 1B since JT Snow actually.

As BC said though, we need at least one more move. I'm not satisfied with just Garko.

As for Barnes, I'm a bit sad. I think he will be very very good one day and if we were going to trade him - maybe we could have packaged him to get even a better hitter?

At least he's going to the AL and we hopefully won't see him very often. :p

Anyways, Cy is tearing it up again! And oh it feels gooooood to be home! :D

Some other stuff about Garko ... According to my 2009 MLB Preview guide:

Short, efficient stroke. Plus raw power. Likes the ball up and drives it to all fields. Punishes LHPs. Struggles with breaking pitches. Doesn't translate his BP power into game power. Stiff defender. Lacks quick-twitch reflexes, soft hands and smooth footwork around the bag.

He's hitting .333 against Lefties this year. That is nice.

He's also hitting .351 the past month. Seems like he's coming to SF at just the right time. :D
 
So far, based on the info that you've provided as well as Wiki, it doesn't seem he is quite the best defender (i.e. stiff,) but I don't want to read too much into just articles and analysis until I see him play.

He has a .993 Fielding % on the year and has only made 3 errors, so that's not bad.
 
He is not a great defender but I do not think that he is a terrible one either. You can sacrifice some D at a 1B position.

He won't rescue our offense but he will definitely make it better.
