And there are quite a few prospects that will be attending spring training so this year is going to get exciting.

They just added Russ Ortiz to a 1 year deal according to the crawl on ESPN.

*chortle*

Dodgers fan, couldn't resist. How does the SF farm system look?

How does the SF farm system look?

Probably a million times better than the LA farm system.

We have:

Tim Lincecum: 22 year old RHP, 1.74 ERA, .127 average against, struck out 58 over 8 starts.

Justin Hedrick: 2.00 ERA, .182 against average, struck out 110 in 85 innings over 56 relief appearances.

Brian Horwitz: 24 year old outfielder, .328 average, .400 on-base, 2 batting titles over 3 pro campaigns.

Julio Cordido: 3B batting .455 over only 11 AB's though

Chris Begg: RHP spotting a 1.20 ERA in 8 games.

Oscar Montero: hasn't pitched in a while but has a 1.42 ERA in 14 appearances.

William Bergolla: 2B batting .331.

And there are plenty more. These guys' stats were readily available.

He of the 0-8 record and the 8.something ERA?

Great signing.

We also got Sun-Woo Kim to come to our spring training.

I think Kim and Ortiz are there to put pressure on Sanchez and Hennessey for that 5th starting spot. Although it would be nice if Ortiz could be a 4.00 ERA guy as our 5th starter and we could use Sanchez as our closer and Hennessey as a mid-reliever. I guess it all depends on Benitez. If he can come back strong then we can keep Sanchez as our 5th starter and we are golden.

Um.

Your kidding right?

The Dodgers have always had a superior farm system...Just because we have a few good prospects, that doesn't chage the fact that the Dodgers have a boatload of them...I'd give a lot to have the system the Dodgers have.

Yeah, the Dodgers, in many experts opinion, have the best farm system in all of baseball.

Still huge gaps at closer and batting behind Bonds.

Durham had a career year for homers and he batted .300 behind Bonds last year and Bonds wasn't even playing all the time. So Ray can move from 3-5 in the lineup and still produce greatly. I would like to see Richie bat 3rd before bonds that way Durham will bat after.

Armando is a big ? for the closer role. But I don't think we are screwed. If he comes back to form then we should be good. If he doesn't then we have a lot of young talent that has been learning over the last couple years. I know it is tough to hand over the job to a kid but we have some great kids. ;) Sanchez would be my top fit for the closer role providing we use someone else as our 5th starter. A whippy, lefty with heat and movement shutting down the 9th? Sounds good to me. From what Ortiz has been saying he has regained his motion and velocity that made him successful with us in the past. And he's back with Rags now so maybe he will be our 5th starter. If he is worse than Hennessey then we ditch him and it was a cheap adventure. Brian Wilson, Scott Munter, Jack Taschner and especially Billy Sadler will be competing for that closer role as well.

Spring training should be exciting.

Go Giants!

As much as I like the homerizm... Lets point out some facts, the Giants have about the worst or one of the worst farm systems in the league. Not sure LA could be much worse and they usually have a pretty good system.

And with Sabean, all those players will be traded in the next few years for 80 year old vets.

rotf..... unfortunately thats so... true

In the past two seasons, the Giants Minor League system has been the envy of most big league clubs, ranking third in baseball with a .553 organizational winning percentage, trailing only the Yanks (.555) and Tigers (.554).

I wonder where the doggers are on that list?

Apparently winning percentage doesn't equate to good prospects.

Seriously, can you name one Giants positional prospect who has any hope? I guess you can say 16 year old Angel Vilallona (sp), but he hasnt even stepped into our system yet.

Anyways, the news is official!

The KING IS BACK!

Go Barry, go Giants.

Of course. Todd Linden and Kevin Frandsen will be future Giants (1-3 years). And just because we have a ton of pitching prospects does not mean our farm system is weak as a whole. We are over-loaded with pitching prospects that can and will be traded for positional players that are not prospects.

I'd rather have prospective pitchers than anthying else. They will yield better players in trades.

Not to mention that Bochy did wonders with a bunch of no-names in SD so who is to say he won't do the same with our youngins? Call me a homer but just because we don't have the next Pujols in our farm system does not mean the future won't be bright.

Young pitching will be the Giants future. Will Carroll (Baseball Prospectus, expertees on injuries and big believer in sound pitching mechanics, no less), recently was asked if he could pick 1 pitcher anywhere right now for the next 10 years, taking into account age but not salary, Carroll picked...Tim Lincecum. Lincecum's really the best Giants pitching prospect in years, and that actually means something given that the Giants have actually produced their fair share. (Yes, many of them turn out to be busts, but they do do a good job of keeping the ones that succeed. And Lincecum has succeeded as much as you can at every level he's pitched in so far.)

Cain/Lincecum/Zito/Lowry will be a great pitching nucleus for years, with Sanchez also a bright prospect and correia, hennessey, taschner, and brian wilson (awesome closer during winter ball, i hear?) are all decent young pitchers (who have performed decently in the majors), the most valuable asset in trades and simply not available in the free agent market right now. Pat Misch (next Rueter?) and Billy Sadler are also coming up. I've all but given up on Merkin Valdez though.

Problem is hitting. The IF is mostly excellent defensively, especially with Vizquel and Feliz (top-3 at their positions) on the left-hand side. Problem is very little power/contact at the corner positions. At least Bochy recognizes Feliz's offensive ineptness and has already penciled him in in the bottom of the order when he actually starts. Outfield will again rely on Bonds, although Winn isn't too bad and Dave Roberts is one of the few basestealers who actually steal at a high enough % for it to be worthwhile (unlike players like Juan Pierre or Luis Castillo from a few years ago, when every steal attempt actually hurts the team and yet they still go for those 60-70 attempts!), so he will be very productive in the 100-130 games he'll likely play. Roberts' and Winn's speed at CF and RF will help a lot at home with the giant CF/RF alley.

No doubt. But you said it yourself, we have a great young pitching nucleus. So we aren't going to need as much run production. Smallball + Barry will work fine and I think it could win us 95+ games as long as our bullpen doesn't throw them away. But then again Benitez has lost weight and is going to fight to maintain his closer status.

I'm getting excited.

Giants Baby!

Giants and the Kings both need to blow things up....... :(

The Giants and Kings are miles apart in terms of where their respective organizations are.

The Giants have arguably one of the best starting lineups in all of baseball. Plus we have more prospective pitchers. So what if we don't have a bunch of power-hitters. Smallball works with great pitching. The only ? is our closing, but Benitez has lost weight and Wilson pitched great in the off-season. So the Giants are actually in contention to win the division and then some. The Kings on the other hand are not in contention to win the division or anything of the sort. We (kings) aren't even in contention to go .500.
