2009 SF Giants Thread

Say what you will about him.

Barry Bonds is in the announce booth right now, and I miss that man.
There is no doubt in my mind he could uni up today and be this teams best hitter.

The Giants desperately need at least one more quality bat!!!! Someone like a 35HR and 100 RBI player. I think they are one player away from serious competition with LAD for the spot in October.

Like Sir Barry after a 2 year 'recharge'?
His 'D' can't be worse than Fred's...
;)

In all seriousness, the Giants are one good bat from being awesome. 20HR/90RBI annually would be enough I think.
With the Giants awesome staff you just need an anchor for the lineup. Not a monster.
The monsters are in the pitching staff.

Just an identity from the lineup.
And that identity isnt Benji Molina...

True, but I have been very pleasantly surprised these past 2 years. He has exceeded expectations as a hitter, especially as a clean up.

However, I do agree with the sentiment that we NEED a competent hitter.

I think that Dunn would have been a nice addition. yes, his defense is not great but I do not think that he is that super horrible, he is just horrible :) .. but if you have 1-2 weak defensive players, you want them to be Dunns, not Uribes. Put him behind 2 solid contact hitters and he will give you 100 RBIs even in that ballpark ... guaranteed. And he was not very expensive.

20HR and 90RBI is another Molina and I think the Giants need someone more powerful. May be not Dunn ... someone who is more balanced but who can hit around 30HR, someone who can turn any game around with just one 3 run hit :)

You might get 100 RBIs with Dunn, but you're also going to get 200 strikeouts. He is a free swinger, and we already have plenty of young free swingers (i.e. John Bowker.)

If we were going to get free-swinging power, I'd rather develop Bowker than spend money on Dunn.

I agree we need a guy who can turn a game on one swing, but Dunn is not him.

Cmon Giant bats, you gotta pick up Zito on one of these starts. That's three quality starts in a row we haven't been able to give him the W. Granted we've won all of the games, but we gotta get this guy in the win column.

Once again, props to Zito for a solid outing. If he keeps this up I am going to be a very happy Giants fan this year.

I mentioned Dunn because he was available ...

The Giants are way better this year but watching their offense is painful. It not only about bringing one quality bat, I was wrong, they desperately need at least 2 - 1 power hitter and 1 fast running contact hitter. You get them, you can get to October.

And one more thing - SF GM was too desperate this summer. He overpaid to RPs and SS. It looks like he is the only one who did not see the crisis coming.

I hope we can get some good bats for Sanchez or Cain next year. Unfortunately, Madison Bumgarner and Tim Alderson are too young for MLB.
And I am a little bit disappointing with Angel Villalona's development. I've read some scout reports this year and they were not that super positive.

We already have the fast guy.

His name is Emmanuel Burriss.
The guy hit 350 in spring training and some 280 in his time last year, and he's still extremely young! He WILL improve!
When you throw out all the young players this team is, they will have growing pains.
Once Manny Burriss regains his confidence he will hit a solid 280 and steal some 30 bags,
He is struggling now, but he is going to be fine.

Then you have Ishikawa who can be a 20HR/85 RBI solid first baseman.

Pablo Sandoval. A hitting machine. And not looking terrible at 3rd. I went to the non TV game on Saturday and he made an AMAZING play. Dove and snagged the ball on the line, threw a BULLET from his knees and nailed the runner by a half step.

Shierholtz can hit.

Then you have all the amazing talent in the minors.
We can't sacrifice Cain or Sanchez for a quick fix to make a run at the NL West.
We're great in the lng run. The sooner the success the better, but you cannot sacrifice it for an insta-repair.

Just ask the Sacramento Kings.

When I said we need 2 bats, I did not say that we do not have potential solid bats. But we do not have them now and we can feel it every game this season.

And we do not have to sell Cain or Sanchez for a qvik-fixer. May be we can get another young asset for him. Again, I was not talking about this year.

I am not so crazy about Ishikawa. 20/85 is the best case/dream scenario I think. I might be wrong and honestly I do want to be right. Anyway, you have to have Utleyes, Mannys and similar offensive threats if you wanna win something and I do not see any now. We have plenty of good and potentially good offensive guys and no beasts. We have a great core of pitchers and I do not wanna see this opportunity wasted. Tampa showed us that deep solid pitching + quality hitters (not necesserally A-Rods) can win you many games but you have to have some offense and I do not see anyone like this in our system (who can contribute now or next year).

Being out on the East Coast, I don't get to see many of the games. I follow online now and then but mainly follow the team through box scores and write ups on ESPN. It seems to me that Molina is somewhat of a leader on this team and is great with the pitching staff. Am I wrong? Is he dispensable? I know that Posey is supposed to be a stud, but I can't imagine how bad offensively we'd be without Bengie Molina. Do the Giants have the $ to hold on to Molina and bring Posey along slowly and start a platoon until Posey is 100% ready?

Good point. Very good point. More important then Buster Posey is our Young Pitching staff. Molina is great for Lincecum, Cain and Sanchez.

Finally back in the US and got to watch a game on TV instead of reading box scores. Sandoval, who has been frustrating for my fantasy team, had some amazing defensive plays at 3rd today. Here's hoping that the Giants can keep this up, make some moves around the deadline, and take advantage of Manny's absence to win the division.

Barry Zito has shown me more in the last 27 innings than he has his entire Giants career.

Did you see him get ANGRY when Boch was gonna yank him? Zito was pissed, and he made himself stay in the game.
That was more passion from him than he has shown in his past two years COMBINED.

That is very probably the very first positive comment I have given him since my original "OMG WE SIGNED HIM!" post.

Keep it up Barry.

And it needs to be said.
Zito has looked good since adopting Sandoval as his personal catcher.

Which then leads to me thinking that Sandoval is erfect no mater where he plays,
:p

Yeah that was a great game to watch tonight. The air was completely sucked out of Chavez Ravine. First, Manny and then we come in and take game 1. Congrats to Zito, his teammates finally picked him up! He is playing great!!

He actually has command. I think that has more to do with it than Sandoval. Same problem that Willis is having... just cannot regain control and command.

I think the ship has sailed on Lewis.

He cannot field at all, only has decent speed, zero power, and is streaky.
And he's some 28.

Unfortunately our team doesn't have faith in Schierholtz, because I am pretty much 100% sure he could do better than Freddie is doing nowadays.

I agree in some ways but disagree to an extent. He did show some flashes last year as a starting LF. I think the injury really stifled his development/confidence.

I heard a interview with Kruk and Kuip on 680 today, and they said that once he finds his swing, and they believe he will, then his confidence will translate in the field, and all other aspects of his game.

It's just a matter of playing the waiting game from the FO standpoint and how long they are willing to wait.

I want more than 'some flashes' from a 28 year old in his second year of starting.
I think Fred is what he is. A really good 4th outfielder/pinch hitter/pinch runner but I don't think he can be any kind of effective as a starter.

I personally think Nate has shown more in his very limited playing time than Fred has shown his entire starting career.

And he's 3/4 years younger.

We're rebuilding.
I say why not.

Just peeked in on the Giants, Nats box score and Unit has 9 K's through 5 innings!!!! Damn. Unit is dealing tonight, wish I could be watching this.

Unit has been a roller coaster.

He has been a puzzle through his Giants tenure.
One inning he looks like an unhittable Cy Young candidate then the next inning he looks like a 45 year old man clinging to his past.

He clearly still has the stuff, and I just don't really get how he can look SO bad.

In line for the win tonight with a 4run/8hit line.

Will the real Randy Johnson, please stand out.
:p
