2009 NCAA Tournament

Actually I'm not just evaluating either on the basis of what they did in college. I mentioned either in this thread or one of the other threads we've been discussing the potential draftees that the concern about any player we bring here has to be their ability to mesh in the system the Ms operate both defensively AND offensively. We have players on this team who were first and second options on their collegiate squads, yet we remain frustrated that they don't act like that in this system. I don't think it's them, I think it's the system. That will certainly be the case for Zellous. I think I specifically cautioned when I last said this that we'll have to see how she'll do when she's not hoisting 20-30 shots a night because she sure as hell ain't going to get that in the minutes she's going to have in Sacramento. Nor do I think she'll get it if she goes lower than 7 in the draft.

Re: January. I don't care about how athletic the Pac-10 is or is not. I only care how athletic she is. I have seen January go up against the Big East, ACC et al. I also have seen January for four years, not just the last month.

Of course I don't know how either of the two of them or any player for that matter will do once they get in the pros. If I had that power, I would use it for something other than prognosticating about the WNBA draft.

What I do think I have a handle on is my opinion re: whether or not they'll be asked to be all world here. I think the answer is no. Not with the moves Whiz made and the players likely to return as the core here. They, I believe, will be asked to play a role.

Gearlds situation in Seattle I lay squarely on the rookie toxic combo of Donovan and Agler, probably moreso on Agler because Gearlds at least seemed to play more under Donovan...which isn't saying much. I don't think Gearlds lost skills she had that made her a "steal".

I had obligations that prevented me from seeing either game yesterday. I was able to catch the first half of the Stanford UConn game on Stanford radio until I lost the signal on the way home....which I guess was a good thing.

I will not be home for the Nat'l Championship game either...which I now seem not even remotely interested in watching unless Louisville would guarantee that they'll either win or at the very least not lose by more than 20.

I was looking forward to this game the entire weekend, and it wasn't pretty. Appel did her thing, and well....that's about it. Here's hoping that either JJ Hones stays healthy next season or Tara has recruited Candice Wiggins 2.0 (crosses fingers). Stanford's post rotation of Appel, Pedersen, Boothe, Ogumwike and next year Joslyn Tinkle will IMO be the best post rotation in the nation.

I'm really, really hoping the Louisville/UConn game is at least close...but somehow I'm doubting it.

I did see Tinkle in the McDonald's Allstar game. I had read a lot about her from the scouting websites, much more impressed when I actually saw her. (There was also a STUPIDLY fantastic athletic play between Tierra Ruffin-Pratt and China Crosby that I felt was better than a dunk and if more people saw that these young women were capable of would be more marketable than a dunk because stuff like that was more likely to happen on a nightly basis than a dunk...but I digress;))

From what I did hear (if I felt like it I could watch the games I recorded) it seemed like their turnover-fest in the first half did the Cardinal in. They essentially played UConn relatively even in the 2nd half....or at least later in the second half. I lost the radio about the time UConn was launching their second big run early in the 2nd half. Fair assessment?

Could you tell me what happened in the OU/LU game? I swear I checked the score at the half, left for about 30 mins and came back and OU was down. It was hard from the reading the score updates on the phone to get a sense how that game turned so quickly.

Well, your hunch was well-founded.

Congrats to the UConn Huskies. They just steamrollered their way to an undefeated season.

I didn't see tonight's game, but the score wasn't close.

I really did think the Stanford Cardinal women would've made it fairly close in their loss. But when the huckin' Fuskies :p beat the Lady Cardinal handily, I thought to myself that there was no way UConn would be denied. It was simply their season.

Still, I'm proud of how the Cardinal played this year. Only one senior (Jilllian Harmon) on that team, and they made it to the Final Four. Nothing to be ashamed of.

As much as it pains me to say...congrats UConn. You were indeed the best team this year and you showed it. Life's not fair when you get Maya Moore 2 more years and we don't! :p

I thought ESPN in general did a good job hyping this game up to the average sports fan, however I'm sure this game did NOTHING to disprove all the "haters" of WCBB or women's basketball in general, which is a shame. Not to say that the players were bad, just the game wasn't too exciting for a Championship game. I guess the same could be said for the Men's Championship.

In regards to the OU/LU game, I'm actually guilty of assuming OU was headed to face UConn, so I switched channels, then Louisville was up. I think they went on some ridiculous run in the span of 4 minutes, not sure though.

Lastly, I am proud of Stanford also...it's sad to see Jillian leave on less than a stellar note, but she will definitely be missed! Does anyone know if she has aspirations to play in the WNBA?

Undefeated

I guess I have to offer my congrats to the GENOs. They are impressive.

As for Jill the Thrill... Word has it she is hoping to be drafted. But if not she will finish the last couple of sets of grad school classes she has on the Farm then test International waters. She has the New Zeland Ties but may look to play in Australia. Apparently some offers have been made.

I guess well see...

I think ESPN got the best they could hope for to snag the casual viewers....much better than if they would have had to sell Stanford Louisville to a non hardcore womens basketball crowd. I think you can catch eyes with a juggernaut, if that juggernaut is named UConn or Tennessee. It pains me to say that more than it does to congratulate the Huskies. Congratulations Huskies, on an impressive season.... All in all it was a fantastic tournament this year.I believe Harmon is listed in the prospect database on wnba.com but I can't remember. I think that is what the teams get for players eligible or otherwise available for drafting...as we learned from the Meg Bulger faux paux. I think however it will be extremely difficult for a non all american to actually get a job in this league unless she jumps over a few into the first round. At least not until the league expands the rosters back or adds at least 3 more teams...or both. Or there is a mass retirement in the next couple years. I don't think the gms expect any second rounders or lower to make a roster this year.
